The issue probably was when the game was first released, it was only looked upon my those niche Indie Gamers who were open to simplistic graphics and mechanics. I mean, I liked Earthbound and went to it for comparisons with that. Kind of like how I would not like Earthbound Beginnings whatsoever if it wasn't attached to Earthbound.
