Yep from what I gathered from Serebii, level 40 is the level you want to be at before it evolves. IVs are good, and ability doesn't matter. Good Trapinch!

It was an error in the original release. It doesn't do that now. OH WAIT. I REMEMBER NOW. I thought the game was too hard for grass types, so in the original release I gave slightly stronger moves in the beginning. Then eventually I yolo'd it and reverted it back. #EveryManForHimself.

Bulbasaur's a good choice, but you're going to have some trouble with it in the game. Grass is easily the hardest option tbh.

It was entertaining up to the part where he couldn't even figure out the very first part of the puzzle. That really hurt my soul ;-;. Other than that, his rage was beautiful. ...However what concerned me were people in the comments immediately saying the game was broken instead of learning the field's capabilities. Oh well...

Oh geeze, Where were you when this happened? Also, I've had an increasing amount of people ask when the next version will be done. So I've done a progress chart similar to the 14.5 progress chart to give you guys an idea of how far the next update has come. I hope that'll answer some of your questions .
