8 year old me was obsessed with Pokemon.
But 8 year old me probably never could beat Pokemon Reborn.

12 year old me had a shot. 8 year old me never cared about Toxic stalling, Stats, or how Burns lowered your attack. All it was to me was "choose your pokemon, pick the super effective move, and kill the target. Also level everyone up to 100. Swords Dance doesn't do damage, therefore it is useless. Calm Mind and Nasty Plot are in the same boat."
8 year old me was able to beat Final Fantasy 6 on my brother's old SNES emulator, as well as 7 on my Playstation 2, so that's something, right? Just pick the weapon with the highest stats. Fire Dance is always a better option than Aurabolt because Sabin learns it at a later level. Comet Materia is better than Ultima Materia because it looks cooler. It also does the same damage as Meteorain. If I was able to beat those games while being so stupid, what was the point of Mystic Quest again?

At least your younger self hopefully didn't have the same packrat/hoarder mentality I did, where I never even used consumable items between E4 battles. It's a wonder I completed any E4's, but somehow I did all of Gens 1 through 3 on pure beserker mode..........with enough time and punching the same wall

@ShadeStrider same. Also don't forget the classic "use only two pokemon with four underlevelled fodder because f grinding". My final team was basically just level 50-something Empoleon and Luxray with as many attacking moves as I could get, and a level 45 lucario for spice.
