If you pick squirtle, chikorita, cyndaquil, totodile, turtwig, piplup, tepig, chespin, or fennekin as your started then you're reducing the number of possible pokemon you can obtain by one evolution line. It feels like you're being punished for not choosing one of the other starters. Discovering that your starter was a wasted chance to obtain pokemon would convince many to delete their save file and start anew.
The game equates ECT with electroshock therapy, which surprised me considering how liberal the game is.
