      I hate wearing just socks, so I leave my shoes on at home if I expect to need them again. Other places I leave it up to the residents.

      Plenty of people don't take off their shoes in houses throughout the world. Where I live for instance, people generally take off their shoes if asked to, but it's not always the case. Like, if you have family over they may take them off, but if you're inviting your boss and his wife for dinner obviousy you're not gonna make them take their shoes off. In some countries, it's unthinkable not to, in others it's ok... Different habits for different places.
