@Another Retired Shipper People dislike being scared, that's why scary movies aren't getting released. But still, people like the feeling that they're scared, and thus we have these "blockbuster horror" movies getting released which provide nothing but cheap thrills.
Really, from my experience indie films and especially literature has been what has pushed the genre forward, and not the mainstream horror flicks.
