In the first area of the library, you can walk across the bookcases to get around the trees. On the upper floor (not the room with all the field effect descriptions) there will be openings in the banisters that leave a space open for you to walk on. Another curious thing is that the doll is not consumed during the summoning of Absol, so it may be used again later. Again, just speculating.
