You can't access the key from the wasteland, instead you need to go to Tanzan Mountain, and go in the cave that Saphira comes out of after the section in the meteor base there. Instead of going to the old meteor base, go left (towards Aventurine) and just before leaving the mountain go through the cave entrance of your right.
