Avatar of Grima
I think my biggest gripe with the playoff rankings is Baylor being left out and Ohio State being put in when Jeff Long supposedly is citing strength of schedule as a metric thus far, and another metric was conference championships - which have yet to be determined, making strength of schedule a lofty 50% important in these initial rankings -IF- consistency was present. Virginia Tech -is- a more impressive non-conference game than anyone Baylor has played this season -BUT- this a particularly a season in which there are other teams who are undefeated who have played similar schedules thus far - TCU - Michigan State - Memphis ??? Alabama being in doesn't concern me. They and LSU have a tilt this Saturday and if Bama loses they are officially -out- of contention. If they win, they will quite clearly have the sexiest schedule among one-loss programs. agreed. I still don't think Ohio State is that good :/
Chase
So, Baylor trotted out it's true Freshman quarterback out in it's outing against Kansas State and he put up some impressive numbers - but Baylor still needed a defensive stand to ice the football game after place kicking and defense didn't help Baylor stay far in front at the final whistle. Let me try to determine how this impacts their chances at the playoff. You can't blame last night on the offense. - and that includes Freshman QB Jarrett Stidham. The kid was 23 - 33 for 419 yards and racked up 3 TDs. He also rushed for a TD. The big difference offensively in this ball game was that Kansas State was able to put the breaks on Baylor's equally threatening running game - but in the end, that just highlights how DANGEROUS Baylor is through the air. Usually you're supposed to have the "W" if you can keep an entire team to only -just- over 100 yards on the ground. Baylor yet again has a championship worthy offense. The kid can play on the road. - which is particularly important as the remaining schedule offers up trips to Stillwater, Oklahoma and Ft. Worth, Texas. Kansas State's large crowd was wanting revenge for Baylor sinking Kansas State's 2012 national title hopes in Waco - and stayed in full force till the final whistle. Defensive Philosophy could turn some committee members away from the Bears - unjustly. Phil Bennett's defense is very much the equivalent of a tennis player and not so much as dominant a defense as we would hope for. That's largely due to philosophy. Baylor's defense is often times it's lethal OFFENSE whenever it's on the field for 10000000 plays a game and breaking the scoreboard. When the Bears' defense is on the field, all they want to do is "Break Serve" with the opposing team. If that means forcing turnovers and holding the opponent to field goals as much as possible instead of going for punts on every possession, so be it. They have confidence in their offense to widen the gap to the point where they can focus on bending without breaking. Glaring weaknesses that I see with Baylor The running game on both sides of the ball; opposing rushers easily knife through the defense, while a good defense -CAN- stop Baylor from doing the same on the ground. Baylor likes to draw flags. Expect A LOT of them from both teams when Oklahoma comes to Waco next week.

Chase
I guess I'd better contribute with a couple of news bulletins. In case you somehow missed it this week - Alabama did in fact beat Clemson in the second National Championship of the Playoff era. The game was an extremely worthwhile watch; salvaging the completely lopsided bowl season and particularly the two semi-final games held on New Year's Eve. Your final is Crimson Tide 45, Tigers 40. Also - who would have thought a 'process' coach used to winning handily would pull something like a mid-game onside kick out of his sleeve? Actually kinda shocked Saban had it in him. Kirby Hocutt will replace Jeff Long as College Football Playoff Committee Chairman. Hocutt is currently serving on the committee and is also Texas Tech's Athletic Director. Long will remain on the committee, but you'll see Hocutt discussing the CFBP rankings instead next season. Hocutt is the biggest name on the committee with ties to the Big 12 conference, who demographic-wise, is at a major disadvantage. I don't know where Hocutt having the chair position affects the Big 12's standing with the committee though. The conferences have elected to allow conferences to host championship games WITHOUT having at least 12 teams as long as the teams play a Round Robin schedule. This also mostly concerns the Big 12 - who now wouldn't have to expand it's conference with two more schools AND would pick up a 13th game if they were to so choose. There are drawbacks to deregulated conference championship games though. This season - Oklahoma would have had to play Oklahoma State AFTER beating the Pokes at the end of the season in this currently hypothetical championship game with virtually nothing to gain in perception with a win, and what would have been an assured playoff spot with a loss.
