^ maybe he wants to keep it like that for when eviolite shows up (if it didn't already). eviolite dusclops > any dusknoir for stalling.

The more realistic reason is... he doesn't know where to find the Reaper Cloth. Or is not that far in the game jet. Good luck getting Evilolite lol

A good pokemon which doesn't disappoint but it's frequently looked down upon is Emolga. Nuzzle + Energy ball is a excellent combo. While acrobatics deals a huge chunk of damage as well. Its speed also allows it to go far in the game, I used one to beat Ghetsis and Alder, for instance. Too bad it doesn't learn Fly.

The elemental monkeys (Pansear, Panpour and Pansage) are also quite helpful if you teach it good moves and reach their peak os usefulness at Lvl 40-50 (if you evolve them), but by the late-game they become weaker and slower compared to the fully-evolved pokémon that normal trainers start to use.

A guts Raticate with toxic orb is also quite powerful, but the problem with this one is that you need investment, so you can't get one of these at your time of need. And when you have the resources ($ and time), you will have much better pokémon available.

I think you mean Electro* Ball. You had me startled for a minute there- didn't think Emolga could learn that. I'm going to second this as well- I was surprised at how well my Hoonoki did with Nuzzle + Electro Ball. Acrobatics was very good earlier on, too (but I found it started to peter out a bit later).

As for something that surprised me... well, the answer is Meowstic.

I hadn't used one despite adoring the design ever since Gen VI came out, since I don't own a 3DS and thus, can't play X or Y. So I picked one up late-game in Reborn to see how it'd do.

Needless to say, I was impressed. Prankster dual-screens and some HP investment turned little Cantus into something that could take hits, and give full on-team support, too. Psychic did not extremely high, but decent, damage as well.

Earlier on in the game is when Espurr and Meowstic really shine, though- they get good early STAB in the form of Psyshock, and Light Screen quite early as well.

Reborn is also what made me appreciate Trubbish, too. I've only actually managed to keep mine around past Shade once (also the only one I evolved), but Toxic Spikes is a godsend and Stockpile isn't too shabby at all.

...Well, really, Reborn makes you appreciate a lot of things. It's been said before, and I'm saying it again, anything you can get in the early-game can be useful. You just have to find the right niche for it.

I've noticed a couple people asking why I have not evolved my Dusclops. Simple answer: I think Dusclops is just better than Dusknoir. Sure I know where to get the Reaper Cloth, I just don't want to. Dusclops is an absolute powerhouse in terms of defensive bulk, and the Glitch field makes that massive special defense-oh wait the phys/special split is removed SO GHOST TYPES ARE PHYSICAL. DANGIT AME Y U DO DIS? But yeah, definitely holding out for the Eviolite. Pls Based Ame grace us with the pink lump

Mightanya with moxie destroys the 1st 3 gyms I was very surprise because always loved it design but its stat line not the greatest but even tho it in the box it will always be the real MVP in my book because of the movepool and swagger, and howl he made Shade,Shelly and Flo feel the pain and even made Fern fall into Mr.PoPo Pecking order (TFS Reference here) Mightanya gain my respect as a dark type

One of my strongest mon early game was my beautifly Mothra. She dominated and was a force to be reckoned with until the Ice Gym. She isn't as useful anymore but her varied moveset is really good for coverage.

Other surprises were my simipour Aquaris and my arbok Kaa. Throughout my game they've been monsters. Kaa has been vital in every Pulse Machine battle, if not the sweeper or finisher. Later on I had to rework his moveset to make him a completely physical attacker rather than a mixed physical/special so he could be a glass cannon. My Simipour's Scald has saved me on so many occasions. Mine knows crunch, scald, surf, and acrobatics. He's been very good as an opening mon, making leaders use their potions on their first mon so my other mon can take down their tougher ones. With some EV training I was able to turn him into a glass cannon almost as good as my Infernape.

Another mon I never thought I'd think of using was Vanilluxe. It's mainly because he can learn freeze-dry, which will be exceedingly useful in the water gym, and he has better defense and speed than Crygonal or Aurorus.

I don't think anyone that has played this game for more than one run sleeps on Emolga. It's just a beast in terms of typing and that electro ball-nuzzle combo. Also Let us not forget the early game stopping power of Kricketune. Technician Fury cutter. All will fall.

my arbok. i honestly didn't think it would be as useful as it has been when i was first plotting out my team for a replay (i've heard stories about how its usefulness goes down as story progresses), but wow. acid spray and glare were unbelievably helpful, especially against solaris's garchomp (after some intimidate build-up). heck, for that matter, my noibat should have a special mention -- i sent it in on a whim, but i got lucky with his garchomp's accuracy issues and got in several super fangs. (of course, the full restores got irritating but it was simple enough to rinse and repeat.)

i actually haven't used emolga, Damage (or kricketune for that matter), but since my second (and currently only) replay's a dragon type/egg group mono, i can't exactly use them anyway.

Emolga is a good hero. The combo is nice for stopping enemies and its speed outclasses most pokes you'll fight. If you're in a pinch its worth it. Kricketune is pretty good. It can actually even sweep the poison gym if you get enough fury cutters in unless you miss an attack and it will at the most inopportune time but otherwise thats pretty good too. Since you on you're second playthough now you probably don't know about the true hero Gyrados' contribution but that was a wonderful assistant. Kricketune loses its viability around badge 5 due to subpar stats but any poke can be useful if you plan well enough. My Chesnaught swept Cal. Even Charizard didn't do shez. (Btw swept with stunning help)

I had a very similar experience with Trubbish also, that thing performs really well in the early game against Florinia and Corey, though I ended up boxing mine soon after that.

Kricketune was also a life saver early game, evolving after defeating Fern in Peridot ward and being the MVP of my team until after defeating Pulse Tangrowth.

Right now though Excadrill is definitely my MVP, getting Swords Dance naturally by level up is amazing and Mold Breaker comes in handy very often since it's shocking just how many Sturdy users you'll run into in this game that get wrecked by Earthquake, more than a few Meteors like to carry Weezing, it works wonders vs Noel, and Charlotte and Blake both carry Rotom that get smacked by Mold Breaker Earthquake. It has done work for me in every gym battle I've had with him except Samson for obvious reasons.

Chandelure was a bitch to grind up but has also performed very well, it OHKOed Charlotte's Ninetales with Overheat lol (taking into account Drought, Flash fire, and the field effect)
