NeverUsed Showcase

In which, we discuss offensive and defensive threats in the NU metagame.

Song of the Week:

Pokemon of the Week: Camerupt (Mega)
camerupt-mega.gif

Viability in NU: S Rank - Mega Camerupt's wallbreaking power is nothing to be toyed with. The ability Sheer Force and a good enough special movepool to make use of means nothing standing in from of this behemoth is coming out unscathed. It has a great typing to stop fire spam, a common strategy in NU. The downsides of using Mega Camel are that its slow as molasses so it is rather easily revenge killed and its very poor defensive typing (4x weakness to water) outside of stopping Fire types.

Sets to use on Camerupt:

Camerupt @ Cameruptite
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Ancient Power / Hidden Power [Electric]
- Will-O-Wisp

This is the hardest hitting Camerupt set. HP investment for the ability to switch into resisted hits and fire off a STAB Sheer Force move of choice. Ancient Power is to hit Flying types that resist Fire Blast. HP Electric can be used in its place, however, in order to hit Mantine for 4x super effective damage.

Camerupt @ Cameruptite
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Will-O-Wisp
- Stealth Rock

This is my favorite Mega Camerupt set. Stops Fire types and almost 100% guarantees a switch when it comes in which is why it's a great rocks setter. Flamethrower can be used over Fire Blast on this set for the added boost in accuracy.

Camerupt @ Cameruptite
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 44 SpA / 216 SpD
Calm Nature
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

This is the main set if you want Camel to stay for a long time in a match. The EVs allow you to hit a jump point in SDef and take less damage from rocks upon switching. This set counters Fire types and also takes a dump on Lilligants and Vivillons trying to sleep things.

Other options include Rock Polish but since camel is so slow you wont be outspeeding anything relevant even with max speed.

Also a very neato balance core based around Mega Camerupt is Vileplume-Prinplup-Mega Camel:

323.gif323.gif

Camerupt @ Cameruptite
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 44 SpA / 216 SpD
Calm Nature
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Prinplup @ Eviolite
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Scald
- Defog
- Grass Knot/Toxic

045.gif045.gif

Vileplume @ Black Sludge
Ability: Effect Spore
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Moonlight
- Sleep Powder / Aromatherapy

Probably one of the most common F/W/G cores in NU atm. RestTalk Camel let you avoid being worn down by the fire types you're switching into. Vileplume is the best Fighting check in the tier and allows one to sleep something or heal allies' statuses. Prinplup is another Fire check with the added utility of Defog + Rocks. (Also stops Gatr!)

Mega Camel is one of the more interesting 'mons in NU. Its shallow movepool leaves a lot more to be desired but with what it does have it puts to good use. Its super low speed stat make it one of the slowest 'mons in the game and holds it back from being one of the very best pokemon in NU. Good teammates are things that can get rid of bulky waters for Camerupt. (Lilligant, Vileplume, Rotom.) 'Mons that enjoy Fire types gone also make good partners for Camerupt. (Lilligant/Sneasel.)

I hope you all enjoy the second installment of the "NU Showcase"!! I'm covering all the remaining NU megas first and I'd like some recommendations on what to do in following weeks. As always, leave your comments, checks, and counters down below!

I actually don't think Fire/Ground is that bad of a typing if it wasn't for how common Water types and water moves in general were.

((then again, I am known as the guy that always says Fire is a pretty good defensive type, and I still hold firm on that, it is just rarely given the tools to be defensive, that is why it gets a bad rap... also the stealth rocks thing doesn't help.)).

Overall, Mega Rupt is a pretty cool mon none the less, and it has a super amount of power and I have seen it do pretty well in OU. ((mostly do to Hilda who uses it bloody effectively.)).

It is one of those mos that happens to be pretty slow, and that is it's greatest weakness, but if you can play around it it has so much power it isn't funny. It puts pretty large dents in things and Ground/Fire/Rock Coverage is nothing to scoff at, it is pretty nasty type combo and hits a lot of things for good damage. ((Ground/Fire isn't too shabby either.))

I kinda feel the Megas should be spread out a bit, but I can understand wishing to tackle them all at once and get them out of the way. I would love to see one on my man Sawk when you get to it.

Also, where do people get the XY/ORAS sprites ((well... they are more like models...but eh..)) from? I may or may not do some RMT or some teambuilding stuff in the future would be nice to have them lol.

I really wanted to comment on the song, which I must say, I'm really feeling it!

Jelly, putting those jams aside, Camerupt is a pokemon I really like. I love how it stops fire types, and I never thought of running ancient power...

go 3 Mega Audino

I see a reiterated use of WoW as 4th move for Camerupt, but I'd like to point out that the camel also gets Flash Cannon, which hits supereffectively Mega Audino and is boosted by Sheer Force... I'd say it's worth running at least in the all-out offensive set (the first one).

That aside, another good thread (WHERE IS MY MALAMAR THO?). To reply to nickrash: when suggesting a core built around an offensive Pokemon, it is wise to suggest defensive Pokemon that can cover for its weaknesses... And well, Vileplume is the best defensive Grass-type option you'll get in NU (well to be honest there's Eviolite Tangela too, but that is kinda being forgotten this gen for some reason), which is why you see it suggested a lot :P

You guys should be less worried about jelly and his vileplume and more about jelly and his prinplup. Jelly is the only person on the planet to use prinplup and he uses on every team ever. Anyways, mega rupt is interesting for sure. Camerupt though slow and without super bulk hits extremely hard for NU and has great coverage also. Fire and ground hit most threats so with prediction you can have some fun. Sending this camel on something that can't hit back is like saying who wants to step in front of the hype train, NO BRAKES. The main problem is the speed as jelly said, if whatever is switched into camel has a super effective move the hype train gets derailed fast.

Speaking of speed, Mega Camerupt has actually the lowest base speed in the tier. Also, NU has Audino, a Pokemon with the Trick Room + Healing Wish combo, and Carbink, a Pokemon with the Trick Room + Explosion combo. Three guesses on what I am going to suggest next, and the first two don't count.

3rd guess is TR team? and yeah mega rupt would be deadly ten times out of ten under TR, that coverage is deadly

Only reason I don't suggest Trick Room, is cause it is a rather hard strategy to pull off jsut becuase it asks so bloody much of you to do so. There also is no hold item that extends the turn count of it so you have 4 turns to work with. It is probably muuuuuuuuch more doable in lower tiers, but it still asks you mountains fro a pay off that might not exactly be equal. It is worthwhile to mention that it is in fact a strat that can be used, but it is something that takes a bit of skill to pull off reliably. ((keep in mind... I don;t play NU much, it might be much more effective/usable down in this tier.))
