Rural-Urban Fringe

The rural-urban fringe is the transition zone between an urban area and a rural area. During the last few decades, the fringe has become a popular area for new economic developments. The farther from a CBD a plot of land is, the cheaper it becomes; this makes sites on the rural-urban fringe appealing to businesses , as they make for affordable areas that are still close enough to the city to attract consumers. The expansion of businesses to the rural-urban fringe has also led to some contention from certain groups. Environmentalists argue that urban sprawl must be restricted to protect the natural landscape and the habitats within it. Farmers also need large areas of open land, and fringe developments can threaten the amount of space they have. There are three main issues involving the rural-urban fringe.

One of these issues is suburbanisation, which is the movement of people from within a city centre to the outskirts, or suburbs, of the city. Suburbanisation is the result of several factors: people living in cities may feel that the suburbs offer a higher quality of life, with larger houses, more private space, lower crime rates and a less polluted environment, such as Stranmilis. This contrasts with more cramped and polluted city areas such as in Frenchpark St in Belfast. Suburbanisation has a number of effects on the rural-urban fringe. Smaller settlements’ unique identities can be threatened by cities merging with them. The increase in private car usage as a result of people living farther from work increases traffic congestion and contributes to air pollution.

Another issue associated with the rural-urban fringe is counterurbanisation. This process is the movement of people from an urban area to a rural area, beyond even the suburbs, such as Comber or Hillsborough. The reasons for this are similar to those for suburbanisation: people are attracted to the prospect of larger houses and a more open environment. In addition, people may have an idealised vision of rural living, with a slower pace of life and a friendly local population. Counterurbanisation has a number of impacts on rural settlements.
