Pokemon of the week is...

Breloom

Viability in OU:

B+ Rank- Breloom is such a crafty Pokemon! Having access to Spore AND Swords Dance makes Breloom a fantastic sweeper! It also gets a amazing move called Rock Tomb, which can be used to check it's counters like Charizard Y and Gengar! Nothing is safe from this monster! However, STAB Fighting and Grass isn't really all that impressive and can get walled by the previous said counters if Breloom does not have Rock Tomb to check them. That shouldn't stop you from using Breloom, however! With the right tools, you can accomplish anything as long as Breloom is healthy!

Recommended Movesets

Breloom (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spore
- Bullet Seed
- Mach Punch
- Rock Tomb / Swords Dance
Breloom is a immediate threat. It is able to hit hard with both STAB moves due to Technician, boosting moves that have a 60 base power or less by 50%! Spore is mandatory as it essentially cripples a pokemon for the rest of the game. Bullet Seed and Mach Punch are the chosen STAB moves due to both being supported by Technician. Mach Punch is a wonderful priority move, and Bullet seed is able to break through Focus Sash, and hit hard every time! The last slot is for whatever you want. Rock Tomb can be used if you want to OHKO Mega Charizard-Y, Talonflame, or Mega Pinsir. It can also cripple Gengar that like to switch in against Breloom. Swords Dance can also be used if you prefer to sweep late game.

Breloom (F) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 12 HP / 244 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Facade
- Seed Bomb
- Superpower
This Breloom is slightly more offensive than the other Breloom set. It is able to prevent pokemon from crippling you with burn or paralysis if you get your Toxic Orb to activate. 12 HP EVs are used to have the maximum recovery from Poison Heal. The rest go into Attack and Speed to be as fast and powerful as possible.
Swords Dance is a must to put more pressure on the opponent. Breloom can achieve a lot of kills with Swords Dance. Facade is used to take advantage of the Toxic Orb boost while also recovery HP, so it's a win-win. Superpower is the last slot to have another STAB attack that hits Steel types hard. While this set seems weak compared to the first set, you are able to recover HP while hitting back hard right away, unlike the first set that needs to be able to Spore a Pokemon to be able to be threatening.

Making plays

First set- You are able to play recklessly the first few turns. However, be careful when you use Spore. Sleep Clause is always activated by default in every OU battle on Showdown. Otherwise, pick the most reliable move to use against your opponent. Breloom tends to force many switches, so you should be able to outplay your opponent if you predict correctly.

Second set- Try to get your Toxic Orb to activate as soon as possible. Recovering 1/8 of your HP every turn will support Breloom really well! Once you get your Poison Heal ability to work, you can simply fire off strong attacks. Use Swords Dance mid to late game and prepare to sweep the opponent off his or her feet!

Team Synergy

Great partners for Breloom are pokemon that can clean up with Breloom. Talonflame and Keldeo are wonderful pokemon that pair well. They also create a great offensive Fire, Grass, and Water core! Another recommended partner is Tyranitar to take on the likes of Talonflame and Mega Pinsir that threaten to OHKO Breloom with Priority moves. Latias is also a great partner as it can remove hazards by using Defog and is able to use Healing Wish to give Breloom a second chance at sweeping!
Charizard Y, Talonflame, and Gengar normally threaten Breloom due to resisting both Grass and Fighting STABs. If you do not have Rock Tomb, you can use a Choice Scarf Heatran to threaten Charizard and Talonflame with a Stone Edge and fire a Overheat against Gengar!
