jamesw0102
Well to be honest Fern was a doush but I like when rivals are mean. To be honest fern is really weak all you need is a good fire type pokemon and you can pretty much take out his whole team with just one fire type pokemon. So in my opinion he needs to be stronger like charlotte and then everyone else will be having a hard time beating him lol Edited March 2, 2015 by jamesw0102
Deleted User
His team is evolving over time, originally he has all grass but he since adds pokemon like Fraxure, Krookodile and Scyther Who's still weak to fire....
Shing
Well his team is begin to get more other type. Remember that Fraxure. And Ame gonna make Fern team like your doom. I bet it. Edited March 2, 2015 by ShingSt
Gentleman's Hat
Mean rivals like Gary always do give me a good reason to try harder. X/Y was just awful having a rival who is only obsessed with battling you for shites and giggles.

Alilatias
I expect Victoria to show up again soon too. Usually we fight all three rivals fairly close to each other. Since the events of Route 1, we've only fought Fern and Cain once each, though 3 episodes have happened since the fight with Cain. I wonder how her team would change. Helia
I am actually not bothered by Fern. Every time he talks all I'm thinking is: Who are you trying to convince here? Me? Well clearly that's not working out for you as I've beaten your ass about 5 times now? Your sister? trying to prove your worth to her? Also not working. Perhaps yourself? oh well. Later bro. Cain doesn't bother me that much either, he's just very open about it and I wish there'd be a hot steamy sex scene already(or an ex of his popping up, or a STD count, maybe a GG bullitin with Dirt on the newest gym leader's family *sextape*) Victoria actually bothered me the most by being a pain in the ass who preferred me to go easy on her Sensei who was about to die already over saving 5 children. Then again they're all much stronger gym leaders so how about some junior action, huh?
Global Mods Ice Cream Sand Witch Posted March 2, 2015 Global Mods Share Posted March 2, 2015 (edited) Fern seems like he's been built up all his life by everyone around him because he's next in line as a Gym Leader and he did good in school. He's been surrounded by yes men his entire life and he let it go to his head, and when he finally loses to you, it's a huge blow to him and he tries to play it off by making excuses about why he lost and still thinking he's better than you. That's the impression I got after beating him at the trainer's school from his speech about "You think you're cool because you're battling gym leaders? Well I can do that too. I'll show you!" It's kind of similar to how Bennett's defeat speech ends at Iollia Valley. Not that I'm justifying his actions. He pisses me off, but at the same time I laugh at him because I just imagine him desperately trying to prove himself to the player and acting tough to hide his humiliation that there are people who are better than him. His team is the easiest for me because I have type advantages against everything he uses. I would have trouble with Ludicolo if he kept it, though. Ludicolo with Rain Dish + Giga Drain + Big Root would be so annoying to deal with if you can't hit it for super effective damage. I like Cain. He's fun in a world where not so fun things happen sometimes. His team is kind of challenging for me, although like Fern I have advantages against everything. Victoria has my favorite design of the rivals. Her outfit and battle pose are badass. She lets her emotions get the better of her, but considering the school she's at, I'm assuming she'll develop if she appears again in the game. She's the only rival that hasn't incorporated other types in their team to deal with common weaknesses, which would probably be a good idea. Scraggy negates Psychic, but all of her team is weak to Flying. Edited March 2, 2015 by StrawberryLoveIntervention

Chase
Fern - Absolutely nails the rival you just want to kick the crap out of every time he's on-screen. Cain - ...is pretty much his own breed. His humor is geared to older audiences and thus isn't relatable to a main series rival in any way. This isn't a bad thing. Victoria - has absolutely NOTHING going for her whatsoever. In general, Reborn has great -characters-, but suffers a bit in the battle department due to the rivals being to an extent type themed. Victoria never has this rectified (nor does she develop as a character) - but Cain and Fern make up for it in spades by adding different Pokémon to the rotation. The type themes kind of give off the impression that rivals are able to be trifled with, thus making them not so much major obstacles, even though that's....again, Victoria's only purpose to date. I don't like Victoria, okay?

Chase
That would explain a little bit too as it's easy to be critical of one's self - but while we are similar in type preference, Victoria and I don't see eye to eye as individuals.
Foamy
C'mon, that's pretty hard based of his actions and dialouge. Yup, and that's why I said "try." I don't think she'd succeed, but we'll probably get some kind of explanatory back story.
