Narration theme: Magnificent Dark Family

What is fear?

Many individuals will reply that it is a negative feeling: fear is what causes humans to lose their will to fight, to forget about their duties, to fail at their tasks. This, however, is a misconception: in truth, fear is a key part of the existance of every living being, as it carries with it the conscience of one's limits, the ability to recognize danger, and the basic instict to stay alive. Courage is not lack of fear: courage is the ability to determine whether or not completing one's task is worth the risk of ignoring one's fear and insisting in pressing forward. Lack of fear is none other than foolishness.

There was a time when humans were aware of this: back then, their world was full of gods and angels, as well as demons and monsters. Albeit slightly different from culture to culture, all such beings served one purpose: channeling the fear of humans in ways that could help keep them in line, preventing them from indulging in their own hubris. Fear of the unknown prevented them from using their eceptional intelligence to tamper with the very fabric of reality, from sticking their noses where they didn't belong; fear of the divine punishment kept them from using their extraordinary skills to harm other living beings, and at the same time all those gods, angels and assorted supernatural creatures provided a positive model, an example for humans to follow. For centuries, humans held dear these feelings, and knew the meaning of the word "respect".

But in the present days, because of wars, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, accidents caused by human error, and daily incidents of murder, humans have forgotten those important feelings. The unknown, the mysterious darkness doesn't scare them anymore, because they only fear their own kin. They don't respect other living beings anymore, because they are too intent in taking one another's life to satisfy their greed and ambition. They don't believe in the gods anymore, because they only worship money and power, their own creations. They have crowned themselves the new gods of a false world, a patetic imitation they themselves created, and are content to live in ignorance, only pursuing their short-sighted goals.

This is the story of a group of heroes who stood up against such a corrupt society.

Title theme: Tiny Bells

EPISODE 1: Heartland Homicide

It was a beautiful day in the prosperous city of Heartland. the sun was shining on the crowded streets, the chirping of the birds who nested on the trees of Heartland Park getting lost in the cacophony of the city traffic. A gentle breeze caressed the skyscrapers, and the gigant heart at the top of the city hall's tower, the symbol of the city, sparkled in the morning's warm light.

But for the students of Heartland's High School, class 2-2, that wasn't a beautiful day. Their homeroom teacher, mister Tenjo, had been found dead and, given the circumstances, the police had started an official investigation. Nobody had uttered the word "murder" yet, but everyone knew that was the main suspect.

It was therefore in a gloomy, tense atmosphere that the new teacher, Anna Reinier, held her first lesson. The two hours breezed through, none of the students caused any trouble, but it was clear, just by looking at them, that they weren't paying attention at all. And who could blame them for that? The death of their teacher was the top story on all the morning's papers, wild speculations on what had happened already appearing on front pages. The 24 students were pretty much in the eye of the cyclone. A cyclone none of them was ready to face.

... And this concludes the lesson for today. Thank you all for your attention.

Said miss Reinier. A tall, incredibly tall woman, with a slender body, platinum hair and golden eyes, many male students would have probably started fantasizing about her almost immediately, under different circumstances. But that just wasn't the day for that.

Since we have 5 more minutes before the bell, allow me to say something. I am fully aware of what is going through the minds of all of you, and I would like to thank you for the maturity you proved in being present today despite it. Professor Tenjo's death was a shock for all of us, but for all of us the worst part is not over yet. Journalists are flocking to the case like vultures and, since it would seem that it was impossible to determine a sure cause of professor Tenjo's death, the most insane, absurd theories are being thrown there: come to think of it, someone has even hypotized that, since his body was still wearing the Duel Disk and Duel Gazer when he was found, then it means that he was involved in an illegal duel when he died! Seriously, how can anybody come up with such a silly theory? Duel Monster is an innocent game that is wildly popular in this city, what is "illegal duel" even supposed to mean?

So yeah, what I wanted to tell you is this: no matter how insane the theories you hear are, no matter how nosy the journalists get, please don't let it get to you: endure it, and we will make through this situation together, eventually.

The bell that signaled the end of the lesson interrupted the speech.

... Well, this is all. Please try and cheer up now, and enjoy your lunch!

And with this, the lunch break was officially underway.

Rules and guidelines of the "At School topics (read before posting):

The scene takes place at school, during the lunch break. The lesson immediately before is Anna's the that immediately afterwards is Gwyn's, so both are around, and you can interact with them if you want. Relaxing, chatting with the others and establishing relationships are your main goals for now: while you can challenge others to friendly duels to relax, it won't have any impact on the story, so please don't post anything about your duel here. If you challenge someone and they accept bring it to DN, and once you are done make a post here describing what happens after the duel (like "[Character] aid 'Ah! I beat you!'"), without going in details with what happens during the duel.

To find a balance between the esigence of letting everyone post and the esigence of carrying out extensive conversations without being bound to make one post per day, it has been decided that each user, after posting, must wait six hours before posting again, meaning each of you can make a maximum of 4 posts per day. This is to prevent this topic from becoming a mess (remember we are 27). Of course, should all other participants manage to post before the 6 hours are over, then you are allowed to post again regardless of time limitations (however, this seems a highly unlikely eventuality).

From time to time, Anna will intervene in the conversation and say something: sometimes it will be just random chit-chat, but sometimes it could be a valuable hint for the "After School" session, so make sure to pay attention. Talking to her directly may or may not improve the chances of her dropping a valuable hint.

When you make a post in which you talk to someone, please include a note, at the top of your post, stating who you are talking to. This will make it easier to keep track of the conversation.

And remember: Number Cards haven't been officially introduced yet, and nobody has them yet, so do not mention them for now.

The lunch break will be over, thus ending this topic, in exactly a week, that is next sunday at 21 GMT+1. Make the most of the time you have at your disposal to forge bonds with others!

Klive immediately stood up from their seat and promptly put two fingers in their mouth to loose a piercing whistle, intending to get most of the classes attention. Pausing for a moment to make sure xe had that attention, Klive spoke up, though xe spoke in the demure, monotone voice xe always did. "Good afternoon all, I haven't heard any of those rumours people have apparently been spreading. I think it'd be nice to know. Can anyone please fill me in? If any of them feature myself I'd like to know now" One would assume xe meant to stop those rumours of they did feature xem but Klive was hardly one to worry about what others thought about xem. No, it was better to be knowledgeable and see if any of those rumours would benefit Klive and xe had no issue with being so blunt with the whole class.

"Hmph" is all that came out of Roy as the kids asked their questions to the class. He didn't feel like answering the question posed on him nor did he feel like starting conversation with anyone. 'What luck, moving here and on the first day of school hear a teacher has died. I just hope I won't be the lowest of the low at this school.' He thought to himself, then beginning to dig into his bag for his lunch box.

To Setsuna, the events that have been transpiring as of late were all fairly surreal. First it was the death of their former homeroom teacher, Professor Tenjo. Next it was the homeroom teacher who ended up replacing him. To Setsuna, she gave this kind of enigmatic feeling of deja vu the moment she first walked into the classroom.

She gave a quick sigh. She really did not want to ponder this in the middle of a classroom that would soon get quite clamorous due to the lunch break. While ignoring the outburst of one of the other students in the classroom, she checked to make sure her bento was in her bag along with her book and the cards she was working on creating a new deck with. Once she saw that everything was there in that bag, she picked it up by the handle and silently walked towards the door. After all, the school's garden was the most soothing place in the building for her.

To roy

yo roy, i heard you're new to this school. the name's Eric. Sorry about the word about Mr. Tenjo's death, things aren't normally this crazy. Mr. Tenjo was one of my favorite teachers at this school and one of the best. He even lent me one of his cards. Since you're the new guy, why don't we get to know each other with a little duel?

Dean casually stood up, walked to lunch, and organized his deck during lunch. While he was organizing his deck, he thought about the rumour "Maybe the teacher died because a scuffle with somebody resulting an illegal duel."

Zander was barely shaken by his teacher's sudden demise. Honestly, he had more things to worry about, like what happened to the platinum ring generally located on his left index finger. I may have left it at home. That sounds about right. I think I took it off before I washed my hands. Zander sighed and pulled his lunchbox out of his bag and began to scan the room. He was searching the room like a hawk, hoping to swoop in and comfort a distressed female student.

Will was rummaging through a toolbox in the supply closet at the end of the same hall where class 2-2 was located. He stopped for a moment as he thought about that new homeroom teacher who had replaced the late Mr. Tenjo.
"What an interesting person." He muttered under his breath, until his gaze fixed upon the item he had been searching for. "Well, anyway, I guess I can fix that leak now!"

Will's attitude perked up as he locked up the closet with tools in hand. He whistled to himself as he walked down the hall and towards the bathroom. He happened to be passing by class 2-2 as he heard that woman dismiss her class for lunch.

After finishing his lunch, alone, like usual, Gawyn stood and made his way over to Anna Reiniers room. He had only seen the woman once before, as far as he was aware of, but something in the back of his mind kept telling him that she had been here all along. Strange. He softly knocked on the open door and stepped inside. "Poor Tenjo....." he thought as he waited for Anna to notice him. "The old man never did have that duel with me. I wonder...."

(Anyone who is willing to talk with Rene.)

Rene was quietly sitting in his seat towards the back of the room as Miss Reiner had finished her lecture. Rene couldn't help but think about the loss of his previous teacher more than anything throughout the morning. Rene wasn't too close with Professor Tenjo, but Rene was getting comfortable with his teacher. 'Man...what could have happened to him? Who wanted to kill him?'

Those questions echoed throughout Rene's mind all morning. The bell rang for lunch which snapped Rene out of his little trance. He quickly grabbed his lunch, but lethargically walked to the school cafeteria.

Rene found a spot at an open table where he quickly and quietly sat down. He pulled out his lunch: A tall, triple-decker sandwich, some potato chips, some other vegetables, and a bottle of water. He looked around the cafeteria to see how the other students were feeling, but he noticed that his classmates were the most affected out of them all. He hoped someone from his class would come by and talk with him at least. He was always afraid of asking others to sit with him at lunch, but to anyone that did he was very kind to them. Maybe today would be different... His class could share the same feelings, talk about the same things, or even unify together. Rene wanted to share his feelings at least as he hopes for someone to sit with him.

TO herself then to Rene

"Thirty minutes till next period", Red thought as she left the classroom and walked down the hall to the cafeteria. "Fifteen minutes to eat lunch, fifteen minutes to study for quiz in Professor Gwyn's class". Red had always be more focused on the task before her then the world around around. Even with the death of a professor, Red was determined to get a perfect mark on her quiz. Perfect grades meant she could stay in the city and explore. Something she couldn't do on the farm. She had only just recent transferred to Heartland two weeks ago after a science fair prize gave her a full ride scholarship to the high school. Not that her old school was bad, but Heartland was known for having one of the best drafting and mechanical engineering programs in the area. She couldn't resist having access to a lab with all brand new technology.

As Red entered the cafeteria, she began to realize that there was something wrong. A usually loud cafeteria was in total silence, very few students were talking. Some were crying, some had faces of despair. Thinking to herself, this professor must have really meant something to others...

Red quickly found a spot next to a student known as Rene. Red gently tapped Rene on the shoulder to get his attention. Unfortunately, he was in a haze that he didn't notice.

Red finally spoke softly, "Rene??? Earth to Rene???"

(To Setsuna.)

After hearing of Mr. Tenjo's demise, Dominic couldn't bring himself to attend the class, for once he didn't have the spirit for something. He found his way to the garden, spending his free time sharpening his punches, as well as the deck that he felt couldn't suit him any better. As he gazed at it he remembered a rumor he overheard, "Died due to an illegal duel.. It seems so far fetched, and yet.." Dismissing it for now, he put his deck away and noticed about now it would be time for lunch, so he picked himself and brushed his clothes off.

Making his way to the door, he noticed someone made their way out here as well. "Voi! Class over already? You guys weren't too hard on the new teacher, right?" Dominic paused to fix his bag and jacket over his shoulder before continuing, now in a mildly somber tone, "Perhaps I am just over thinking, but this entire situation doesn't feel right. I doubt I am the only one."

Focus : Minerva
Location of Focus : The Halls of the school
Focus Mood : In meta-cognition
Others Present : None

░▓░▓░▓░▓░▓░▓

"What a day...I never knew something like this would happen here. Especially to Tenjo" Minvera sighed as she began to think to herself as she wandered the halls just by herself, about to go into a state of meta-cognition. You usually don't see the corpse of your teach everyday..."Eh...He was probably so bad at dueling he probably should have died. I didn't like him as much as a teacher either. He didn't have to die though." She concluded he thoughts. She didn't feel like talking to anyone at this particular moment. Usually she didn't like reflecting upon herself either. But she did it every now and then when she needed to so she could keep herself somewhat sane.

Then she began to think about this new teacher. Who is she? Why her over the next dude? Is she talented? Why am I starting to get Hungry? She did hear her stomach growl once or twice. "I'll get some food later dammit!" She sighed as she slowly started to wanderer the halls of the cafeteria. Its not like she liked the food there, but its not like there really was an alternative. She then sat down and continued to look at her deck. Yep. Same old deck as it usually is. Also fun to look at too. Usually brought a slight smile looking at her deck even though sometimes it reminded her of one of the few things that she hated like her family.

She heard her stomach growl once again. She finally gave up and started to slowly wander to the cafeteria.

░▓░▓░▓░▓░▓░▓

End Focus : Minerva thought to herself about the death of Tenjo, the new replacement for Tenjo, food, and was mostly in a self-reflective state.

To Klive and Gawyn

Anna allowed her gaze to wander around the class. No emotions transpired from her golden eyes, as she calmly watched her students relax and get ready for lunch time. She seemed content to just watch as the boys and girls started to converse with one another, grabbed their food, or moved to the cafeteria. Of course, the main talk topic was Tenjo's death, as was expected.

Turning around, she spotted a familiar figure coming in through the door. Moving aside a lock of her platinum hair with her hand, she gave her collegue her best enigmatic smile, looking straight in his eyes.

Professor Falas, please come in. How nice of you to wait for me to go have...

A sudden piercing whistle interrupted her abruptly.

Excuse me for a moment...

Turning around, she immediately saw who was responsible for that: sighing, she tried to fit herself in the role of the strict teacher.

Miss Hartluck? Please come here for a minute. I have something to say about your demeanor, and I am sure professor Falas does as well. Isn't that right, professor?

(To Dobby)

Robert sighed as he got his lunch out, reflecting on the... darker events that had taken hold of the school. Right before he could even start his lunch, the sudden whistling made him cringe, turning his focus towards the cause. He wondered if all the rumors just bypassed... Klive, if he remembered that monotone voice well enough... until now? Otherwise, how would he not already get flooded with them when everywhere else seemed to have it been lit like wildfire. "Well, I haven't exactly heard any names with them, or atleast the ones that aren't anymore than attempts at gossip. There's the most common idea that he was in an illegal duel, but even that could just be speculation with coincidence."

Blair looked around the room in faint irritation. All these people worrying over the professor's death. There was nothing to be done other than to find the person responsible, if there was any. Take apart the incident and look at it, find out how it worked. Was it a heart attack? Did he have some sort of health issue that would cause sudden death? But no, let's run about weeping and crying instead. Machines just did things that made sense.

That reminded her, it was finally lunch. Blair made her way to the cafeteria, found an empty table at the edge, and withdrew two items from it. Well, not properly two. One was a simple bagged lunch, and the other appeared to be several pieces of a disassembled Duel Disc.

After hearing the 5 minute speech of Miss Reinier, Aron couldn't wait to get out of the class and get a look at the cafeteria, the school was new to him as were having classmates. Some were weirder than others, "especially that weirdo who whistled through the class just to get everyones attention" Aron thought to himself. The death of this teacher seemed to be very tragic, but Aron never knew him, so it wasn't a big concern to him.

Aron quickly took his schoolbag and walked out of the classroom, heading towards the cafeteria. First he would need to make some friends, then he'd need to know how the school works, which he could ask his 'friends'. These would be his main objectives for today. Aron always liked to make lists in his head of what to do, it would calm him and it would avoid being faced with unexpected situations.

Arriving at the cafeteria Aron just stood there, observing others and looking for a place. Maybe he could find some classmates to eat lunch with...

Leaving the classroom, Antex thinks about the death of Mr. Tenjo and "illegal duels". He sees Aron and decides to push the thoughts out of his mind as others might be shaken up about it. Antex then goes and talks to Aron since he is new to the school. "Hey, whats up Aron? You mind if I join you for lunch?"

To Anna and Klive

His ears still ringing from the whistle, Gawyn just nodded with his usual cold stare directed towards Klive. He wondered how this one would react. It was a game of sorts to him, to see which of the students would back away, and which would not. "Professor Reinier." he said. "When exactly did you start teaching here? You seem so well known by everyone. I've had a number of things on my mind recently and.....I can't seem to remember."

{Anybody still in the classroom}

A girl with bright green eyes and long, wavy brown hair had sighed after Professor Reinier finished her last comments for the day. It was not due to sadness nor shock, though. Arial Longshire was actually more disappointed than anything else; she had heard good things about Professor Tenjo and was really enthusiastic about this class. But noooo, of course someone had to take him away before she even got the chance to meet him. "Well, so much for relying on "Rate My Professor" to breeze through class," she groaned as the students sauntered off to who knows where. After giving them a brief glance, Arial scratched her head and rummaged though her bag. With a few good tugs, she pulled out a small box that contained her lunch and an encased tablet.

"Well, it's nothing a good, quiet lunch and some wifi couldn't fix!" She exclaimed as placed a shrimp sashimi in her mouth. Arial then waited patiently for her tablet to boot up, chewing the piece of sushi slowly to savor the flavor. The young girl had considered getting up and joining her fellow classmates, but the thought of "illegal duels" had caught her interest. As soon as her screen had lit up, Arial placed another piece of sushi in her mouth and cracked her knuckles. 'I wonder... Wasn't there a rumor with illegal dueling a long time ago...?' With a few swift strokes of her fingers, Arial was soon on the Internet reading down a list of searches that contained "underground dueling," "illegal," and "Zane Truesdale." The girl was so engrossed into her reading that she barely acknowledged Klive's loud whistle, nor anybody for the matter. One could easily sneak up and see what she was reading...

((To Darklight))

Luck was on Luna's side as Anna seemed to miss the red haired girl sleeping in the back. It wasn't her fault they had to make these lectures so long and boring. As Anna was finishing up her lesson, Luna woke up just able to hear the end. Honestly, she wasn't bothered by the professor being dead compared to the other students. She felt bad for the guy, but since she never paid attention in class, she hardly knew a thing about any teacher let alone him.

When the class was dismissed, she was about to make a quick getaway before Anna could write her up. However, a girl reading a book changed her mind. She slowly crept over to the girl trying to avoid grabbing her attention. When she was close enough, she raised her arm up slammed it right on Arial's desk. The bang was sure to grab the girl's attention and probably everyone else's. She simply gave Arial a big smile only saying a simple, "Hi!"

Ken yawned sleepily as he was roused from his mild slumber. He had woken up early in the morning to bake some personal goods for himself along with fresh sweets for his dad's shop, Sugar King. Unfortunately, while a delicious endeavor, it left him rather tired and he had nodded off mid lesson. Luckily, his position near the back of the room made it the perfect sleeping spot. Miss Reiner was alright from what he'd seen so far, but he hadn't had a teacher that could keep him from nodding off at least once.

Slowly getting up as he started to readjust himself, he looked around the room, barely registering Klive's speech and Anna calling out to the boy: Usually he'd make some sort of light hearted retort, but he was too out of it. Tenjo's death affected everyone in the class, and Ken was no different. He merely kept it to himself: Moping could be done in private, but in public there was no sense to do so when he could be cheering up other people instead. It's not that he wasn't sad, he just directed that energy into more productive things. Idly, almost as if on autopilot, The Sugar Prince reached into his bag and pulled out a tin filled to the brim with the cookies he baked earlier: Not exactly lunch, but close enough for him!

He had thought for a moment about giving them out to the rest of the class, buuut... if they wanted any, they'd have to ask. He needed the sugar right now. And so Ken sat back down, idly biting into his homemade sweets as he watched the rest of the room from his position in the back.

Arthur shook his head, snapping out of his reverie as he looked away from the window that had occupied his thoughts for the majority of the day's class. I really need to pay better attention, he thought to himself. He watched another student approach their new teacher, Miss Reiner, and begin peppering her with questions. Hmm... he pondered. I wonder why he's so curious about her. Although if I were into older women, I guess I would be too, he mused with a light grin on his face. He took his Deck out of his bag and began carefully laying his cards out on his desk, substituting new ones in and pulling others out. Much better, he admired after he was done.

He then looked over to see that another girl in the class seemed to be researching the "Illegal Duels" that the teacher had brought up. This captured his attention until yet another student- Anna, he thought- banged her hand on the desk loudly and said hello to the girl with the tablet. Finally, he cleaned up his Deck and put it back in his bag, replacing it on his desk with a small boxed lunch. He opened it up, revealing a delicious-looking tuna sandwich as well as a mango and a small sushi roll cut neatly into six pieces. He then fished his water bottle out of his bag and began eating quietly, hoping to finish his meal before he caught anyone's notice as his bright blue hair was wont to do.
