Landorus-Therian

Viability in OU:

A+ Rank- Landorus-Therian has always been in OU ever since the BW generation. It's safe to say that Landorus-Therian will continue to do so. No surprises here. Landorus-Therian can play so many different roles. One of it's best roles is being a wonderful Stealth Rock lead, having access to U-turn to gain momentum for the team as well. Landorus-Therian is also known to check Talonflame very easily, taking little from a Brave Bird, and threaten to OHKO with Stone Edge. Landorus is a amazing offensive and defensive pokemon that can fit on many teams! However, having a x4 weakness to Ice is really disheartening, since it is one of the best offensive types in the metagame. Landorus-Therian is somewhat slow as well, being easily revenge killed. However, these flaws do not equal Landorus-Therian's strengths, as they can be easily patched up with the right team support!

Recommended Movesets

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 72 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn
- Knock Off / Superpower
This set is meant to make up for Landorus-Therian's low speed, and can revenge kill many threats that think they can outspeed Landorus-Therian such as the Lati twins, Mega Charizard X and Y, and pick off weakened Keldeo.
Earthquake and Stone Edge are always going to be on all Landorus-Therian, since they have nearly perfect coverage. Earthquake gives you a wonderful STAB move to work with, and Stone Edge hits Talonflame and Charizard hard! U-turn is on the set so you can gain momentum for your team. It also hits the Lati twins for super effective damage, so they should not be to much of a issue. The last slot is your choice. Knock Off has the ability to cripple a pokemon's item, which is very important, while Superpower can be used to hit Ferrothorn better.

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 240 HP / 180 Def / 88 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn

This Landorus attempts to be more of a utility tool by setting up Stealth Rock for your team and slowly chipping away at the opponent's health with the three attacks provided. Earthquake and Stone Edge provide the nearly unresisted coverage so you can hit many Pokemon as hard as possible, while U-turn is used to gain momentum for the team.

Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 56 HP / 220 Atk / 232 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Rock Polish
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
Double Dance Landorus-Therian. It's a really odd set. Many people don't expect this kind of Landorus-Therian anymore due to absolutely needing a Stealth Rock user or a revenge killer. This Landorus is able to punish all sorts of teams. Swords Dance is used against more slow paced team hitting hard with the "EdgeQuake" combination. It's unresisted coverage is really scary for slow teams. Rock Polish is used against teams such as Hyper Offense, killing off threats before they can touch you. Earthquake and Stone Edge are the two attacking moves you should use when you get your +2 boost in either Attack or Speed. It's really difficult trying to get both stat boosts, so only use one or the other depending on the opponent's team structure.

Making plays

First set- Predict accordingly as Choice Scarf Landorus-Therian forces many switches. It's best to use U-turn to scout what the opponent will do. Pick up the opponent's strategy, and you can threaten the opponent's team with harsh physical attacks.

Second set- Set up Stealth Rock as soon as possible, and get out of the field when being threatened. U-turn is often the move you will most likely use with Landorus, so you gain momentum for your team at all costs.

Third set- Set up Rock Polish or Swords Dance depending on the opponent's team structure when all counters are gone. Best used Mid to Late game unlike the other previous Landorus-Therian sets that can work well in any part of the game.

Team Synergy

Landorus-Therian pairs really well with many Volt Switch and U-turn pokemon. Talonflame, Rotom-W, and Raikou are great partners. Keldeo has amazing synergy with Landorus-Therian, as it takes on the Ice type pokemon that Landorus is afraid of, while in return Landorus can deal with Talonflame and Mega Pinsir that Keldeo can't deal with.

For the rockpolish set, I have also seen knock off being used instead of stone edge since it is more accurate and can also kill most flying pokes after they take rock damage and if lando-t is at +2 attack. Other then that, not bad.
