Of Shadow and Flame: a Q/A session with Takeshi

A seemingly ordinary, if somewhat rough-looking, teenager stands before you. His hair is nearly long enough to reach his shoulders, and has been bleached an unnatural shade of blonde. He wears a battered-looking zip-up hoodie with an artistic, abstract design on it in gray. His jeans are in slightly better shape, marked with the occasional hole or thinned spot, but look slightly too large. However, topping his build is a somewhat handsome, if lean, face with a friendly expression. "So, before we get started with this whole thing, was there anything you were wondering about? I'm an open book; fire away."

Ask any question that comes to mind here. I'll respond in-character as Takeshi. Basically, I want to make sure everyone is well-informed where they should be in this RP before I post signups. No need to whip up a character on the spot, just post your question.

Answered Questions:

Question:

Is it possible for a mage to break his/her contract with a mediator partner or kill his/her own mediator and still keep their own power? Moreover, is the safeguarding portion of the contract a necessary part of it or can it have its caveats?

Takeshi's expression changes to one of shock as he takes a step back. "Why would you even consider that?!" He shakes his head, trying to adequately answer the question. "Well, the answer is yes, but I have no idea why you would WANT to do that. Mediators don't really do much other than help us out, and they'll do so regardless of your faction. I suppose you could break contract, but it's likely that, depending on what, exactly, you did to break it, you would be attacked on sight by other magical people. Mediators are good at evading conflict but they're actually less physically powerful than the average human; it'd be like killing a child." Takeshi takes a deep breath.

"As for the second part, the purpose of the contracts is to ensure the safety of the Mediator. Some of them have added stipulations and benefits to them, but that's usually the main point." Takeshi looks around. "Anyone have a less horrifying question?"

Question:

Actually, what year is it? what day, month all of that? Is it a particular season or what?

Takeshi thinks for a moment, eyes flicking up and to the side. "It's 2015, and it's the first of May. Well, it will be. I won't remember this chat after this is over with. The weather's pretty mild around here, though, so the seasons aren't a huge deal as long as you dress well. Besides, your body and regenerative abilities are a lot stronger than a normal person's, so the heat and cold shouldn't bother you a whole lot."

Question:

Takeshi, are the Protectors all a part of the same faction or are there different subgroups within them? Same question for each faction.

"They're all the same faction, but each region is going to have their own differences. In recent years they've become more similar, or so I've been told, because they can communicate more easily using the Internet. And, of course, some places are going to have the inevitable politics, even within groups." Takeshi thinks for a moment. "The biggest regional differences you'll find are with the Preservers, since a lot of their plan involves finding places for beasts to go without bothering humans. They're pretty quiet about themselves, but I don't think Peacekeepers vary a whole lot between regions."

Question:

Do the government's have an idea about the existence of magic?

Takeshi shrugged. "The Mediators seem to do a good job of keeping stuff quiet - I'm not entire sure how, probably some illusion magic or something - so I don't think so. We might be in trouble if they did, though." Takeshi's expression clearly indicated that he wasn't fond of that idea.

Question:

Um yes, can you explain a bit more on the nature of shards? for example- Are there only specific areas in an environment where they can be found, or do they more or less randomnly pop up anywhere where there's enough latent energy? Also, after having one's abilities...er, "awakened" or granted by a shard's energy, does one need to keep said shard on hand to maintain their gained abilities, or can it be cast aside afterwards?

"Shards'll show up pretty much wherever. The only requirements for their formation are sufficient energy and a physical location for them to coalesce, so they're sort of like beasts. I'm not actually sure what makes one form compared to having a beast show up. As for holding on to them, you can try, but they vanish after they get used up like that. Since they're pretty much energy in solid form, they don't stick around once you expend them totally like that. They're also not very big; when you hear 'piece of glass,' that's about the scale they show up as. If you're careful with them, you can use them to store energy."

So what happens to the mediator once the contract is made? Is there a specific bond between you two or do they just go off on their own whilst you protect all mediators in general?

Takeshi nods. "Both. If a Mediator contracts you, they establish a sort of telepathic link. They can communicate with pretty much anyone nearby, but they can get a hold of you from kilometers away. However, you're expected to protect all of them to the best of your ability. It reflects very badly on you if any of them die with you around, and if it happens when you aren't then people will want to know why."
