The poll is now closed!

Thanks to everyone who's participated. These were our results, with my commentaries on each of them:

Would you prefer multiple backup files or only one?
  1. Multiple files (18 votes [41.86%])
  2. One file per character (You'd have to swap manually) (25 votes [58.14%])

I'm kind of surprised at this outcome. I'd personally have voted for multiple files, myself.

One file per character means I'll have a lot less work to do, which means the system will be done a lot faster. It also means the system can easily be revisited and only need minor alterations to work with multiple files too, so it's a great option to start with.

Would you prefer the files to be in the same folder or have multiple folders for things like different trainers?
  1. Multiple folders (22 votes [51.16%])
  2. Single folder (21 votes [48.84%])

I'll be vetoing this answer due to the simple fact it makes zero sense to have one file per character and several folders; Creating a folder merely to place one file doesn't really make a lot of sense, does it?

Would you like an automatic load backup system, or are you fine with doing manual backups?
  1. Automatic system (19 votes [44.19%])
  2. Manual system (24 votes [55.81%])

I'm even more surprised by this one. Without the necessity of an automatic backup system, things can be finished a lot faster.

Would you like the backup save files to contain details about the playthrough, such as name, time, map, etc?
  1. Yes (36 votes [83.72%])
  2. No (7 votes [16.28%])

This one I expected.

Follow-up to the above question, which information would you like within the save file? Pick three. (Please only vote here if you've chosen "Yes" above)
  1. Trainer Name (34 votes [29.82%])
  2. Trainer ID (10 votes [8.77%])
  3. Current Map (18 votes [15.79%])
  4. Current Playtime (18 votes [15.79%])
  5. Current Badges (28 votes [24.56%])
  6. Click me if you voted "No" in question 4 (6 votes [5.26%])

Since map and playtime have gotten an even split, I've decided to try to add both at first. So the files will look like this:

"Kurotsune - Peridot Ward - 13 Badges - 10:45.rxdata"

The original reason I said to pick three wasn't due to a limitation as much as it was to avoid cluttering the files too much. Since - at least to me - it doesn't look like adding both badges and playtime will make it too cluttered, I think it's fine.

Would you prefer to have the features chosen to be implemented released at once, or one at a time?
  1. One at a time. (20 votes [46.51%])
  2. All at once. (23 votes [53.49%])

Aye aye, cap'n!

Well, I'd like to once again thank everyone who voted. At 44 votes we've nearly over 30% of the community, which gives me a really good percentage to work with. This system may be revisited in the future after more feedback is received, but for now, this thread has served it's purpose.

Question 1: I can go either way but SOME backup would be great Mainly so I don't have to fix broken save files all the time so that people who have files go corrupt can revert and not be screwed.

Question 2: Put it in the same folder, It's just easier that way.

>Question 4: Yes more info would be greatly appreciated and beneficial because I want all the saves in the same folder. (Or put the backups in a sub folder?)

>>Question 5: Trainer Name and play time are definitely enough (MAYBE the map too)

Question 3: Manual please. Just personal preference.

Question 6: All at once.

Question 7: Necessary (For reasons stated in #1)

Side Idea I'd like to see implemented, I'd like to see a switch within the Game Options for Back-up Saves ON - OFF

Thoughts?

I'm going to ask everyone who supports this idea to let me know by either upvoting Jericho's post or explicitly saying so.

There's a problem. For those who answered "No" to question 4, the vote cannot be submitted, as question 5 requires an answer. Could you add in placeholder for question 5?

Done.

While being certainly more practical than it is already, such an option would just be an extra comfort as you can already do backups if you know what you're doing. I don't see that necessary.
But if you'd have to do it, do it one at a time, so we can progressively beta-testing. Also do yourself strong beta-testings, i don't want my save file to corrupt because of that :P

While I agree manual back-ups are already possible, I'm going to say it's impossible to remember to create your backups every single time. The save system won't ever forget.

It would be nice to have a way to store each different play-through in a different place so you don't have to play all the files to know which is which. Can't you couple the backup to the file of the play-through itself if that would be the case? Also, what would happen to the "trading system"? ("Member trading in pokemon Reborn"-threads)

just in regards to the final question, Name, area and gym badges serves best to determine where exactly a character is in the story and so help me to keep track of them personally, which is more important than playtime and the like imo.

Honestly, I'd just want a system that'd work nicely for multiple save (I haven't actually tried it out yet) so I didn't have to make backups or delete the backup files. I really can't ask for more.

Edit: As for info on the save, I really would only want the trainer name. The ID might be nice to makes sure not to confuse one file for another but not very much info should be on it otherwise you've got some really long titles.

every couple hours of playtime a save prompt would be nice(or at certain game points)(idk how you would go about implementing that) ... just an opinion as i like some others do forget to save our work before backing up ...

I've entertained the idea of adding an optional auto-save feature that saves every time you change maps, but I feel like that's a discussion for another time.

I like Jericho's idea, but only because i like to have control over this kinda of stuff. After all, if i'm using a save for some "tests" or whatever, i'd like to have control over it. (And not have backups for saves that i might never use again.)

Not really a necessary thing, but if you can add it, i'm all for it.

I dislike the auto-save thing you mention, honestly. I prefer to save when I want to.

Then again, back to the point of the topic, I think that these changes could be inplmented once the game is finished, couldn't they? I mean, I personally see no neccessity of these changes just right now, so I'd take it easy and progressively improve those, and when you're done, you can implement them, and that's it. I don't know if I explained myself, I mean that for me, the changes are great but not obligatory to enjoy the game right now (I feel like I'm not explaining very well...)

Anyway, thanks very much for all these options!!

The reason why those are being implemented is because I've nothing else to implement on my end until chapter 15 is released.

So it's being done exactly because there's time.

That said, the poll is now closed! I thank everyone who participated. I will save the results and compile a post commenting on them later, but for now, the poll's been removed from the main post.
