The Successors of Atlantis (Water Monotype Run)

Lord Chespin

Recommended Posts

Hi there, and welcome to my second recorded challenge run (after my TPP Run, which you can find here)! As the title shows, I'll be doing a water-type monotype, with the following rules:

1) I have to use water-types, and only water types. Dual-typed water-type Pokemon and Pokemon that evolve into water-types are fine. Water-type Pokemon that evolve into non-water type Pokemon are okay, but I can't use their evolved forms.

2) I'm allowed to lose impossible boss fights, but with Madame X I have to at least defeat her Yveltal first. Also, I have to go back and defeat the Dimensional Rift Gyrados, both in the revisited Goldenwood Forest and the simulation of the original Goldenwood forest invasion.

3) I have to capture and purify all shadow Pokemon, regardless of whether or not they are water-type.

This is my team so far:

395.pngTriton - Lv. 54 (Male)

658.pngAchilles - Lv. 55 (Male)

Update #1: Fresh Off the Boat

Well, the first battles against Amaria went pretty well! She led with her Fennekin, and my trainer, Perseus, led with his freshly-picked Piplup, Triton (in case you hadn't noticed, I'm going for a Ancient Greek naming theme for my Pokemon and trainer, to tie into the whole Atlantis theme). Amaria just had her Fennekin use tail whip the whole time, but that backfired in her face thanks to Triton's defiant ability, which boosted his attack and allowed him to take out Fennekin in three hits!

The battle against Ren was a little harder, but not by much. Unlike Amaria, he actually had the common sense to attack me, but Triton was stronger than his Froakie and eventually took it down by spamming pound. With my rivals out of the way, it's time to get to exploring the city and finding new friends!

Old Rod will be coming up soon!

BTW, will you be using forms of Pokemon that can become Water type, like Rotom-W or Castform?

Rotom is Axed from version 2. So he won't be able to get it at all sadly :(

Update #2: Taking Out the Trash

Honestly, I think actually finding a Bidoof (as chronicled in my numerous posts on this subforum) was harder than the Garbodor gang. I led with my newly-acquired Damos the Bidoof, Ren led with his Murkrow, and the Garbage Squad led with the two Trubbish. Damos put his newly-learned rollout attack to good use, steamrolling one of the Trubbish and continuing on to (thanks to Garbodor's weak armor) take down Garbodor with only a little help from Ren! The remaining Trubbish poisoned Damos and Ren's Murkrow, but by then it was too little, too late; within a handful of turns, Ren and Perseus went on to crush it! With that out of the way, it's time to start grinding in Voltorb Flip for a Seel and get the Old Rod to further flesh out my team!

400.pngDamos - Lv. 15 (Male)

Update #3: One-Course Melia

Well, I think the Melia battle went quite well. I led with my new team member Adonis the Goldeen, and she led with Fortitude the Zorua. Adonis confused the shiny fox, and proceeded to spam horn attack; despite breaking out of confusion, Fortitude ultimately fainted before Adonis did. I then switched out to my other new team member, Aella the Finneon, while Melia sent out Diligence the Larvitar. Aella set up a rain dance, then tanked a field-boosted rock throw and one-shot Dilligence with a single water gun. I kept Aella out while Melia sent out Faith the Yanma. Aella managed to get a few more water guns off, but she was finished off by a sonicboom from Faith. Fortunately, Damos the Bibarel came in swinging with a mighty field-boosted rollout, taking out the weakened Faith and then steamrolling Happiness the Togepi, ending the fight!

With that done with, it's time to escort Melia out of the forest. It's just a simple walk without any trainers... it shouldn't be too hard. I mean, it's not like we're gonna get ambushed by Team Xen...

...right?

Also, I'd like to welcome Melpomne the Seel to the team! She may not have gotten a role in the battle against Melia, but she's sure to be a valuable team player later on!

The team so far:

400.pngDamos - Lv. 15 (Male)

118.pngAdonis - Lv. 12

Update #4: Not So Fart

The battle against the misfortune duo went a lot better than I expected. I led with Adonis the Goldeen, and they led with Lunatone. Adonis managed to confuse Lunatone, barely survived a confusion, and got off a flail attack; unfortunately, flail did pitiful damage, and Lunatone broke out of confusion the very next turn, taking down Adonis with a confusion. Aella the Finneon came up next, and managed to do much better, setting up a rain dance, taking a few confusions, and finishing off the Lunatone with a weather-boosted water gun. I kept Aella out, while Shannon and Eli sent out their Solrock. Aella got another water gun off, but unfortunately the rain stopped, allowing Solrock to outspeed it and finish the poor fish off with a rock throw. Fortunately, a freshly-evolved Triton came out and took Solrock down with a mighty bubble! Time to confront Zetta and get me a shadow Froakie!

The team so far:

394.pngTriton - Lv. 17 (Male)

400.pngDamos - Lv. 16 (Male)

Update #5: A Rift in Time

Well, I honestly think the hardest part about the Zetta battle was catching his Froakie. I led with Adonis the Goldeen, and he led with Murkrow. Adonis took a wing attack from Murkrow, and then confused it with suupersonic. The murkrow kept injuring itself (probably from comically flying into trees scattered around the place) while Adonis wailed away with horn attack, taking it out in two turns. Zetta sent out his Shadow Froakie next, and I kept Adonis on the field. Adonis withstood a few shadow attacks and whittled Froakie's health down to the red, but ultimately fainted from the relentless barrage of shadow attacks. I sent out Melpomne next, and spent most of her time out using her as a meatshield while I tried catching Froakie. Fortunately, Melpomne didn't have to suffer that ignoble position for long, as Froakie went in after the second great ball. With Froakie caught, I sent out Aella, while Zetta sent out his Weezing. Aella set up a rain dance and started spamming water gun, while the Weezing started spamming smog; ultimately, Weezing went down first. All that remained was his Sneasel, and it wasn't able to do much damage before Damos (whom I had switched Aella out for) steamrolled it with a mighty rollout!

The Dimensional Rift Gyrados, on the other hand... went a lot less well. It plowed through my entire team with earthquake; I only got one hit in (from Damos, using Rollout while it was setting up a rain dance) and even then, it only did scratch damage. Fortunately, Melia and Garbodor took care of it, and now it's time to confront Jenner about his little attempt to kidnap his daughter!

The team so far:

394.pngTriton - Lv. 17 (Male)

400.pngDamos - Lv. 16 (Male)

086.pngMelpomne - Lv. 16 (Female)

456.pngAella - Lv. 15 (Female)

Aww, you can't use Shadow Froakie for Venam...

But there's still that Buizel to get! It does require a Gourmet Treat, which kinda sucks...

Hope you do well for your first Gym battle!

Yes he can ;) Purify chamber in the PC can purify the pokemans. Also I believe the pokemart in Gearen sells Gourmet Treats.

Thanks for the encouragement! =D Also, don't worry about Buizel; I made sure to pick up a Gourmet Treat prior to fighting Melia, so I was able to get this fine lady on the team:

418.pngAlthea the Buizel! D'aww, look at that cute face! >3<

Anyway, the Venam battle's coming up soon, so stay tuned!

Update #6: They See me Rollin'...

Well, honestly, Venam was seriously pretty tough! Despite me outleveling her, I couldn't just sheer force my way through her; basically, if she set up toxic spikes, that was it. End of the run. So, eventually, my cunning strategy was to have Melpomne lock her Trubbish (her primary toxic spikes setter) into a different move with Encore, then wail on it before the encore ended and, if the encore did end, pray that it didn't use toxic spikes. On TEH URN, this strategy worked quite well; Melpomne locked her Trubbish into Venam's kiss, and then proceeded to whack away at it with icy wind. Unfortunately, all that damage from Venam's kiss really added up, and she ultimately fainted; fortunately, Aella came in and was able to set up a rain dance, then spam water gun until Trubbish fainted. Venam sent out her Whirlipede next, and I switched out to Damos the Bibarel. It took a while for his rollout to connect (I even had to give him Chinese food to make sure he didn't faint), but once it landed he was able to not only smoosh Whirlipede into paste, but he went on to 2HKO her Quilfish (which, miraculously, used venoshock instead of toxic spikes), and OHKO her Grimer. Bibarel OP. He wasn't able to do major damage to her ace, Seviper, though, but Aella (who came out after him) was able to set up a rain dance before fainting, allowing Adonis to spam water pulse, confusing it. Ultimately, it fainted due to confusion damage and Adonis' relentless water pulse barrage. Adonis went on to do the same thing to her Stunky, tanking a few venoshocks and letting loose a few more water pulses before ending the fight with an epic flail. Time to head out to Route 2 and chase after Melia!

Update #7: Mission Nim-possible

Gotta admit, Nim was kind of tricky. Jan doesn't pull any punches with his mandatory battles, does he? Anyway, I led with Aella and Triton, and she led with Lunatone and Solrock. Solrock let loose a rock slide, but Aella and Triton survived it and Aella even managed to set up a rain dane before Lunatone took her out with a confusion. Fortunately, the rain boosted Triton's bubblebeam enough for it to OHKO Lunatone, leading to Nim sending out her Inkay. I replaced the fallen Aella with Adonis, and he and Triton worked together with a water pulse and bubblebeam to take out Lunatone. Nim switched out for her Espurr, and with their powers combined, they were Captian Planet able to take out Adonis, prompting me to switch in Althea. Since Espurr had set up a light screen, I decided to have Althea use rock smash on Inkay and have Triton use pound on Espurr; unfortunately, thanks to contrary, Althea ended up accidentally boosting Inkay's defenses. That'd be an interesting idea for a move; it would do massive damage, but would raise the foe's stats. I digress, however. Despite the boosted defense and screens, Triton managed to take out Inkay with a bubblebeam, but not before Althea got knocked out by Inkay. Fortunately, all that remained was a very wakened Espurr, and it went down after a bubblebeam from Triton and a heatbutt from Melpomne. With the battle over, Nim and I parted ways; and I must say, I'm a big fan of her! Her awesome powers, humorous personality, and crazy antics on Route 4 made her my favorite character in the game so far! Anyway, it's time to head into Amethyst Cave and take down Zetta!

The team so far:

394.pngTriton - Lv. 21 (Male)

400.pngDamos - Lv. 20 (Male)

086.pngMelpomne - Lv. 20 (Female)

456.pngAella - Lv. 20 (Female)

Update #8: Lyme Disease

Dear Helix... that Dimensional Rift Galvantula was hands-down the hardest fight in the game so far. Zetta was fine, but the Galvantula and its Jotik flunkies could take out each of my team members before they could even attack! All I could do was pray and hope Venam would be competent enough to take them out!

Anyway, during the Zetta fight, I led with Aella, Venam led with Whirlipede, and Zetta led with Sneasel and Croagunk. Aella set up a rain dance and tanked several hits from both Sneasel and Croagunk, while Venam's Whirlipede OHKO'd Sneasel. Thanks to the rain, Aella was able to speed up and work together with Whirlipede to take out Zetta's freshly sent-out Absol, but fainted at the hands of his Croagunk. I sent out Althea next, and she did some damage with swift; unfortunately, Zetta's Quilladin was able to heal the damage off with a mega drain, but Venam pulled through and ultimately knocked it out despite being seeded. The rest of the fight was fairly straightforward, amounting to me and Venam ganging up on and overpowering his Croagunk.

The real fight began when he pulled out his trump card- the Dimensional Rift Galvantula. Venam and Perseus led with the same Pokemon, while the rift led with two Joltik. Aella managed to set up a rain dance before fainting, and Venam managed to dodge one of the two electrowebs that the Joltik threw at us. I sent out Althea next, and she managed to get a swift off before fainting, leaving Venam to further whittle down the Joltik's health. Then, miracle #1 happened. I sent out Melpomne, and Venam managed to take out one of the Joltik, leaving the Galvantula wide open to get smacked in the face by an icy wind, lowering its speed. Melpomne fainted the next turn, so I sent out Adonis, who managed to get a single horn attack off before fainting, taking out Jolik #2. I sent out Damos next, and miracle #2 happened: he outsped Galvantula and hit it with a STAB hyper fang, doing considerable damage to Galvantula. Admittedly, he got paralyzed instantly and fainted that very same turn, as did Whirlipede, but hey, it's a start. Poor Triton didn't even get a single attack off before fainting, leaving only Venam to pull us through the battle, fortunately, she was able to take down the third Joltik, but that still left one last Joltik. Then miracle #3 happened: her Weezing blew up. Normally, that would be a hindrance, but since I had no Pokemon left and she had one more Pokemon left, it was a godsend. It managed to OHKO the last Joltik and take a huge chunk out of Galvantula's HP. Venam's Seviper then managed to tank one last hit and finished off the Galvantula with a Venam's kiss. With Zetta dealt with (temporarily, anyway) by Crescent, it's time to get through Amethyst cave and take on Keta!

The team so far:

Update #9: The Battle of Sheridan Village

Okay, I take it back. The Keta battle was hands-down the hardest fight in the game so far. At least I had Venam to back me up during the Dimensional Rift Galvantula; with Keta, it was just me and my mostly unevolved 'mons against his mostly evolved 'mons with electric-type moves!

Anyway, on TEH URN, I led with Aella and he led with Hawlucha. Aella dodged a gale punch (or whatever it's called, I can't remember) and set up an attract and a rain dance, then wailed away on the Hawlucha with a barrage of water pulses. Hawlucha eventually went down without getting a hit off, and I switched Aella out for our newest team member, Cynthia the Carvanha! Keta, meanwhile, sent out his Machoke. She set up a swagger and got off a screech, then spammed ice fang until it fainted. Gurdurr came out next, and Cynthia managed to hit him with a swagger as well; unfortunately, it snapped out of confusion and knocked out Cynthia with one hit. Damos came out to avenge his fallen teammate, and just barely survived a hit to take down gurdurr (which had been weakened by a screech) with a hyper fang. Pignite came up afterwards, so I sent out Triton to counter. Starter vs. Starter; it's almost poetic. Anyway, I had Triton use bubblebeam, and he then survived a thunderpunch from Pignite. Keta switched out for his Medicham, but Triton outsped him and finished it with two bubblebeams before it could attack. Pignite came back out, but it, too fainted from a bubblebeam before it could attack. Finally came the hardest part: his ace, Lucario. I switched out to Althea, who managed to get off two rock smashes before fainting from an aura sphere. Triton and Damos tried to attack, but they fainted before getting off any attacks. Then, Melpomne came out, dodged a circle throw, and survived an aura sphere, finishing off Keta with three ice shards and earning me my second badge... or not, because Keta decided to run off. Time to follow him!

The team so far:

394.pngTriton - Lv. 28 (Male)

Update #10: Molten Shadows

Well, I lost the battle against Shadow Mewtwo, but I think the battle ultimately went pretty well. It entered hyper mode on the first turn, and by the end of the battle, all the damage it took added up and (combined with scratch damage Althea and Melpomne did with priority moves) took out two-thirds of its health! I mean, it also took out each of my Pokemon with a single hit (often before they could attack), so I shouldn't be tooting my own horn, but hey.

The fight with Volcanion, on the other hand, went a whole lot better than I expected. I led with Cynthia the Carvanha, and she (amazingly, considering her almost nonexistent defenses) survived a water pulse and let off a swagger and a screech before fainting to a second water pulse. I sent out Althea next, and after wasting a turn using aqua jet (which did nothing thanks to water absorb; I had forgotten that Volcanion has water absorb for an ability), got off a double hit and did a ton of damage... and then she got confused by a water pulse, resulting in her spending the next two turns hitting herself in the face. Fortunately, on the third turn, she snapped out of it and took out Volcanion with one last double hit. With the base in ruins and the Shadow Mewtwo calmed down thanks to Crescent, it's time to follow the ghost of Keta back to Amethyst Cave and get my badge for real!

...After purifying Froakie, of course. I can't resist Froakie.

The team so far:

394.pngTriton - Lv. 29 (Male)

400.pngDamos - Lv. 30 (Male)

Yay, Froakie! He's really good and pretty diverse. He can be a Mixed Attacker, especially with Protean giving insta-STAB. I'm surprised Jan didn't put him later in the game, even if you could only purify him around the second Gym (technically after the first, but that may be bugged. Maybe it's fixed in the new update.).

Wonder who you'll replace for Froakie, if you'll be using it. Probably will, so I suppose Aelia will be, unless you value Rain Dance that much. Finneon/Lumineon are sadly not very good Pokemon, but I still like their designs!

I ultimately decided to replace Damos (temporarily, anyways), since he has a type weakness to Keta. I kept Aella because not only is her ability to set rain dance very, very helpful, but I also managed to evolve her (and Cynthia, too, for that matter), and I need all the firepower I can get.

As for Ghost Keta, it's going fairly well; I haven't won yet, and I doubt I'll win tonight, but I am getting a lot closer to defeating him each time. Maybe it's because his Pokemon learned other moves over thunderpunch, or maybe it's because I've gotten the extra firepower, but I'm cautiously optimistic in saying that I'll have beaten him by tomorrow moring!

Update #11: Ghost of a Chance

So... yeah. Obviously I was a little overly optimistic with my prediction, but the only real reason why it took me until this afternoon was because I had to go to school and only just got home. Anyway, as I said above, Ghost Keta was a little easier than living Keta, probably because more of my Pokemon were evolved. I came really close to beating him several times, getting up to his last Pokemon before all my Pokemon fainted.

Anyway, on TEH URN, I led with Aella and he led with Primeape. Usually, I would set up rain dance and then spam water pulse, but on this attempt she managed to 2HKO Primeape with a two rain-boosted water pulses thanks to one of them getting a critical hit. I kept her out while Keta sent out his Pangoro, and she got off one last water pulse before fainting. I then sent in our newest team member, Achilles the freshly-purified Frogadier! He bounced over a cross chop from Pangoro, then landed on said Pangoro, taking it out. Keta sent out his Hitmontop next, so I switched out to good ol' Triton, who spammed bubbebeam while the Hitmontop, evidently not realizing that it could just chip away at me with its other moves, constantly spammed counter, which did no damage. Great job, Keta. This is why you were the Sensei. Anyway, after Hitmontop eventually fainted (taking with it Ghost Keta's two super potions), Keta sent out his ace- Hawlucha. I sent out Melpomne, who got off an aurora beam and an ice shard before fainting to Hawlucha's relentless fists of fury. Triton came back out next, and he managed to withstand Hawlucha's attacks long enough to get off one bubblebeam before fainting. I sent out Achilles again, and managed to outspeed Hawlucha and finish it off with a water pulse (I considered using bounce, but I figured the odds of Hawlucha using bounce to avoid Achilles was too high)! Keta sent out Scrafty next, so I sent out Althea to take him on. She managed to hit Scrafty with two rock smashes, but ultimately went down to a few well-placed night slashes. Fortunately, Cynthia was able to outspeed Scrafty and take it down with a well-placed slash. All that remained was Keta's Sawk; Cynthia confused it with swagger, and the poor Sawk started whacking itself in the face, dealing enough damage to itself (along with the damage it received from a slash by Cynthia) to knock it out, ending the battle. With Keta's soul put to rest and my second badge earned, it's time to make our way to Goldenleaf town!

Update #12: 'Ey, Maria!

Well, Amaria was a little easier than I expected. I led with Aella, and she led with Staryu. Aella set up a rain dance and tanked a psybeam, then started spamming water pulse, confusing the Staryu and eventually taking it down. Her Ampharos came up next... and boy, it sure went to town on my team. I kept Aella on the field and had her infatuate the Ampharos, but he ignored his privates heart and took her down with a thunderbolt. Cynthia tried confusing the Ampharos with swagger, but Ampharos still managed to one-shot her. Achilles managed to do a little better, getting off two x-scissors, but ultimately got paralyzed by its ability and fainted from a power gem. Melpomne and Althea both got OHKO'd, but Althea at least managed to get off an aqua jet before fainting. Finally, Triton managed to outspeed Ampharos thanks to his quick claw and finished it off with a bubblebeam. Amaria sent out Snorunt next, but it went down after two metal claws (although it did do some damage thanks to the hail that it set up). All that remained was her Braixen, which Triton managed to take out with two bubble beams (I did have to take a turn to heal him in between bubblebeams, though). With Amaria down and cut obtained, it's time to go and explore some of the new areas I can reach with cut!

Update #13: Rirrom, Rirrom on the Wall

Well, Rirrom B. was honestly a little harder than I expected. I led with Aella, and he led with Yanmega. Aella managed to infatuate the Yanmega, and got off a few gusts before ultimately fainting from a few ancientpowers set off by Yanmega. I switched to Melpomne, and thanks to her bulk she was able to withstand an ancientpower and an uproar while she spammed aurora beam and ultimately took it down. Rirrom. B. sent out his Wormadam next, and I countered by switching out to Cynthia. Cynthia hit Wormadam with an ice fang, survived a razor leaf, and then took her out with one more ice fang. I kept Cynthia on the field while he switched to his shadow Vivillion. Cynthia was ablt to outspeed it and injure it with a ice fang, but she went down on the same turn from a shadow rush. Achilles came out next, but all he was able to do was get off a single bounce before fainting to two more shadow rushes. I quickly switched to Althea next, and she managed to withstand a shadow rush to finallt take it down with two aqua jets. All that remained was Rirrom B.'s Accelgor, so I decided to take it on with Triton. Triton survived two mega drains and turned them back on Accelgor with all of his stored energy from bide, OHKOing Accelgor and winning me the battle! Time to confront Ren about Goldenwood!
