The Divergency Matrix - Work in progress

Recommended Posts

Some of you might know I'm a writer. The Divergency Matrix (Title and Story is currently a work in progress) is a novel I'm writing. It's a project I've been planning for a while and have decided to post the first draft of the prologue onto Reborn. I'd quite like some feedback upon the matter, be it positive/negative/constructive. Thanks for your time and here is the prologue:

Prologue

Footsteps echoed down the empty corridor, a monotone clap bouncing from the emptiness that surrounded as each foot met with the floor. The corridor itself was an almost blinding white, made even worse from the lights that hung from the ceiling. They seemed to shine bright enough to eradicate any trace of a shadow, creating the feeling of utter loneliness to walk down such a path,.with not even the darkness being able to follow suit, no matter how hard it would try. The man felt out of place, in his black suit. He felt like a smear, a taint to how pure the corridor felt in reflection to himself, not that the thought mattered. He wasn't paid to feel, just to do his job.

The echoes of his footsteps filled the air, the only sound he could hear in an otherwise soundless, empty corridor. The walk would have drove him insane otherwise, he could have sworn to have heard the blood in his veins squirm throughout himself if he stood still for long enough. Is this how everyone else hat works here feels? he thought to himself. The Suited-Man often thought like this, too scared to ask any other colleague any similar questions to those that entered his head. He'd probably lose his job at DataDyne, or worse for asking. The rumours that he heard whilst trying to apply for the job a few years prior was enough to scare him at the time, but people need to survive somehow, or at least a few select few do.

The Suited-Man lost track of how long he had taken to just walk down the corridor as he saw a door upon his horizon. It too was a bright, pristine white colour, with only the chrome door handle being the signifier that there was even a door there. The Suited-Man went to go check his watch, but remembered that it wasn't there. Company policy prohibited any kind of time keeping device, despite it being a law for the last couple of decades. Has it been decades? How long has it actually been since such laws were passed? It's hard to keep track of anything nowadays... the Suited-Man thought to himself as he turned the handle and opened the door. Darkness consumed his vision as the almost pitch-black room sucked all the light from the corridor in, revealing nothing but the open doorway where he stood, and his newly born shadow laying down before his feet. He walked into the room and closed the door behind him, staggering for a moment as his eyes slowly began to readjust to the darkness. After a moment or two the faint blue glow became more apparent, especially as it created a silhouette of a person before him. The room was louder than the corridor, a buzzing emanating from all directions. With his eyes more adjusted to the dark, The Suited-Man could see the flicker of lights appearing all around him, technology he didn't quite understand seem to be functioning and carrying out its tasks, whatever they may be. "Hey, how's the progress coming along?" The Suited-Man asked, rubbing his eyes as he walked towards the silhouette. "Fine." A feminine voice barely audible over the faint buzzing of machines responded. The silhouette pointed backwards, off into one of the corners of the room. "Subject is still missing but we're retrieving the last known logs in the system. Perhaps we recorded some of the plan or escape before the subject became 'aware'." The Suited-Man made a look of disappointment, not that it could be seen in the dark. Subject missing? Doubtful. Escaped, certainly. "Forget about looking for plans, look for his associates. DataDyne will fire us if we can't at least figure out what organization is behind this." The Suited-Man muttered. "If not worse..."
