Zen
Well, I decided that the Perish-trapping trick might be handy for my bugs... so I adapted it for the bug monotype. However, have yet to playtest it. Since the bugs don't have access to anything that immediately traps on entry, this one relies more on obscure typing to throw the opponent off-guard before initiating the traps. --- Parasect (M) @ Lum Berry Trait: Effect Spore EVs: 255 Def / 255 SDef Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk) - X-Scissor - Seed Bomb - Spore - Swords Dance --- Kricketune (M) @ Focus Sash Trait: Technician EVs: 255 Atk / 255 Spd Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk) - X-Scissor - Night Slash - Brick Break - Perish Song --- Venomoth (M) @ Black Sludge Trait: Shield Dust EVs: 176 Def / 76 SDef / 255 Spd Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk) - Psychic - Hidden Power [Fire] - Sleep Powder - Quiver Dance --- Ariados (M) @ Focus Sash Trait: Insomnia EVs: 255 SAtk / 255 Spd Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk) - Sludge Bomb - Electroweb - Spider Web - Agility --- Crustle (M) @ Liechi Berry Trait: Sturdy EVs: 255 Atk / 255 Spd Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk) - X-Scissor - Rock Slide - Sand Tomb - Shell Smash --- Galvantula (M) @ Charti Berry Trait: Compoundeyes EVs: 255 SAtk / 255 Spd Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Thunderbolt - Bug Buzz - Hidden Power [Ice] - Spider Web --- So, it's basically an entire team of trappers/sleepers. This would only really work in a no-clauses battle, though, since it utilizes multiple sleep tactics. First turn would involve sending two of the three opponents to sleep using parasect and venomoth, followed by kricketune Singing. Then, during the second turn, swap in whatever is needed, and trap them using Spider Web and/or Sand Tomb. From there, it is possible to set up on the opponent. However, as mentioned earlier, the bugs might be rather frail - once you lose the element of surprise, that's it, really.
Maelstrom
Why t-bolt on compound eyes galvantula when you can Thunder with it? It have 90+% acc with it and has a nice 30% paralyze rate to go with it. And I'd go with energy ball instead of hp ice unless I was worried about gliscor. Energy ball likes to surprise those water/ground types that try to come in and absorb the anticipated thunder. And like you said, they're pretty frail, so trapping instead of attacking would likely get your bugs killed right away by the average glass cannon. Zen
My luck is horrible with Thunder if there's no rain, so... Thunderbolt it is. Am still debating the Energy Ball vs. HP Ice - maybe I'll pass the HP Ice to Venomoth instead.
Administrators Ikaru Posted October 17, 2011 Administrators Share Posted October 17, 2011 Late, but the problem with that is you'll pass Perish Song too, which... I don't think you want. Another issue is that bugs can be strong, or they can be sneaky, but never both, except MAYBE in the case of Volbeat. It does look interesting though, nonetheless. As for Energy Ball v. HP Ice, with a monotype team you wanna be able to take out your weaknesses; Energy Ball won't do that as well as HP Ice will. You've already covered the biggest point though:
once you lose the element of surprise, that's it, really.
It's the same with the Absol lead I use sometimes in that it's unexpected and can catch a lot of people off guard, but if it's expected, it'll probably get played around very easily. A shame, really.
