I've actually never played Fire Emblem but been thinking of it. My favorite kinds of games are Golden Sun, Rune Factory, Harvest Moon, obviously Pokemon and anything horror related and a friend always bad mouthed Fire Emblem before so never looked it over.

But wow! The trailer looks amazing so maybe I should consider giving this a chance? Or is there a previous one I should play first?

Fire Emblem Fates (The 14th Fire Emblem game, and titled Fire Emblem If in Japan) has no relation story wise to previous Fire Emblem games, and the general trend in the series is to set two-three games that take place on the same continent then move onto a new setting with a new cast of characters. (EX: FE1, FE2 and FE3 all take place in the same world, but FE2 is on a different continent while FE3 is a direct sequel to FE1, and FE13 takes place thousands of years after those games. FE10 is a direct sequel to FE9. FE7 is a prequel to FE6. FE5 is a midquel to FE4. FE8 is completely independent from every other Fire Emblem game. FE11 and FE12 are remakes of FE1 and FE3.)

I'm not sure how great Fire Emblem Fates will be as a game to start the series off with, but Fire Emblem Awakening (FE13), Sacred Stones (FE8), Blazing Sword (FE7, and in North America is just titled "Fire Emblem"), and Path of Radiance (FE9) are best games in the series to play as your first Fire Emblem game, as they do a very good job of teaching the player how to play. Other entries such as Radiant Dawn (FE10) will be perfectly content to tear an inexperienced player in half, and expect a higher level of competence even on the lower difficulties. (Radiant Dawn's easy mode, for example is about as hard as Path of Radiance's hard mode and it only gets harder from there.)

Blazing Sword and Sacred stones are for the GBA, so they are easy to emulate. If you're not into that, then Blazing Sword is on the Wii-U E-Shop, and Sacred Stones will be releasing on the Wii-U E-Shop tomorrow. Awakening is for the 3ds, and Path of Radiance is for the Gamecube.

The Story is essentially the same, and that you make the decision on which path to follow ingame in the last prologue chapter...

HOWEVER, your version (Black/Conquest or White/Birthright) decide which MAPS you will play and which Characters may join.

So let's say you have the Conquest Version and a friend has the Birthright version and both of you choose to go with the Hoshido-path.

The Story is the same but let's say for Chapter 5 you have a different map and two different characters than your friend.

I don't think the stories would be essentially the same at all.

Birthright is clearly sounds like restoring the Hoshido back to its own independence.

Conquest sounds like the choices you are given is how to integrate the hoshido- harder or softer.

The difference is who you start with under your command, and who you could possibly recruit from the other side, who might see reason in your chosen path.

I really do wonder if you have the choice to be evil/emperor supreme and just take everything by force... but they also did hint somewhere about possibly changing the way the Nohr do things from within. The main character has lived in both worlds and even after taking a side, that fact stays with him.

I think both of you are partially right. I'm really hoping that Birthright and Conquest don't have the same story, but at the same time, you can choose your path (like the game originally advertised) regardless of which version you have.

I heard that there is a third story where you don't side with anyone.

There WILL be one, but I wonder if THAT'S the choice you'll have to make in-game though, rather that Hoshido/Norh

If you have a 3ds, you should definitely try Fire Emblem: Awakening (FE13) to learn the basics.

Got ninja'd with all the relevnat information on the games' relation to each other, but still, I highly recommend Awakening to start.

I'd say play Fire Emblem awakening for a really good intro to the series. It has a lot of elements to it which are kinder to the player than in previous games, making it more fun for people aren't interested in say... resetting everytime one character falls in battle because of permadeath.

Not only is the storyline good, it will be the easiest to get your hands on (unless you're thinking emulators), and the one whose game mechanics is the newest and is going to be the most similar to this upcoming game. If you try it and don't like it... well, I won't know what to think of you... but you'll definitely know if Fates isn't for you.

I have been playing the first fire emblem introduced to North America, simply just called Fire Emblem. If you have a Wii U, you can pick it up from the GBA virtual console for ~$8.

The beginning portion of the game is pretty easy and is all about introducing players to the core elements of the series.

I've known about the series for a long while but never really picked it up until Awakening. I feel really bad that I hadn't picked it up sooner.

Yeah, "Fire Emblem - Blazing Sword" was also my first title... since it was the first Title to be released in Europe and I was a HUGE fan of SEGA's Shining Force-Series.

And to this day Lyndis is still my favorite Lord. I generally like fast characters... and I had hoped I could play her in Smash Bros.Brawl...but then she was just an assist Trophy...

I heard that there is a third story where you don't side with anyone.

About that third path for IF/Fates.

as far as I've heard you have to complete the other two stories first to unlock the third option, and we'll get 3 save slots for each story, so 9 in total.

We start of with 3 save slots. when we finish the first story we unlock 3 more, when the second story is finished another 3 more + the third path.

And my guess would be that the third path is gonna be the canon-path and ending.

Alright, after reading everything, you guys have seriously convinced me! I'm going to buy Awakening for my 3Ds and going to emulate Sacred Stones so I can find out about all this and see if I'm as into it. I'll try and give an update as Sacred Stones I can start playing tonight, Awakening I need to way til I get paid before buying a new game.

Heres to hoping to enjoying this! :3

I think I remember reading that the third path is to be sold post release as DLC. It'll be included in the collectors addition version with the other two though (I think).

I also edited the title, if you didn't want it changed Godot then feel free to change it back.

I read about the 3rd campaign too, but nothing about completing the game first to unlock it or DLC. It was more like, when you reached the chapter when you decide who to help, Hoshido, Norh, or neither.

And guess what boyz?

Marriage and children have been confirmed.

Gon git your waifu!

http://serenesforest.net/2015/06/18/marriage-fire-emblem-fates/#more-27556 It appears that marriage and children are returning, but the child is reliant on the father this time. I wonder where the kids will come from?

I'm glad that's coming back. It's one of the things that has me constantly replaying Awakening to see all the support conversations get to S. Also another Tharja just makes me want to smile evily and laugh.

And it's getting a lot of hate from some 'veterans' as I expected, but it's whatever, you can't please everyone. I'm wondering how they are going to implement the children though, I really hope it's something different from Awakening's time travel.

It's also likely that Tharja, Gaius, and Cordelia :wub::wub: will be implemented as children characters funnily enough. A Tharja-esque character has already been seen on Hoshido's side, so perhaps these three will even the scales that were tipped by putting three awakening characters on Nohr's side.

This should be interesting to see where Cordealia would end up. I say the Gaius esq character goes to Noir but we will see in due time.

I see what you did there.

I doubt any characters will return. I don't remember any of the other games having returning characters outside of Tiki.

Most of the games have characters with similar traits depending on their job class.

Can I see screenshots of the supposed returning characters?

I'd like to have Nowi and Tiki come back. Ya know Manakete and such. I'm interested in seeing what Yarne did with the Taguels

Yeah, I don't see the actual characters from Awakening making a comeback in Fates either. But they might include some references to them in some way, besides the look alikes.

We still don't know what kind of DLC they are planning though, so I still don't discard that idea completely.

The feature is getting hate from a lot of veterans because it's one of the many confirmations that the series is moving in a different direction than what it was when they first got introduced into it, and they happen to not like it. (And the were hoping that it wouldn't be brought back from Awakening) Me? I'm fine with the marriages returning, but if the kids are included because of time travel again instead of a time skip (Genealogy of the Holy War had marriage and children as well, but there was a major time skip between generations 1 and 2), I will be slightly irritated, unless they just happen to be fun little extras with no impact on the plot. I've played every game in the series, and have been a major fan of it since the first North American release, but just 4 years ago if you had told me that the next Fire Emblem game would include a player insert that could marry any opposite member of the cast and have time travel children with them I would've questioned if you were talking about the right series. (FE: Fates main character is looking to be a more interesting player created character than Robin or Kris were though) Starting with New Mystery and it's inclusion of a player created avatar (FE12) the series has been moving in a new direction, which became extremely clear with Awakening, and it's estranged many old fans.

I've embraced it, more or less, and plan to have fun with the future of the Fire Emblem series unless it were to remove all of the strategy elements or became an eroge game, which seems extremely unlikely at this moment.
