Stein
Why does this topic not already exist? This topic is to explain your Pokemon's Nickname(s). Post as many times as you wish I suppose. Main Team: Gen 4: Pengina (Empoleon)- Pengin is the Japanese name for Penguin and since my Empoleon was a girl I added the a to add girlyness. Kazuma (Typhlosion)- Kazuma is a reference from an anime called S-Cry-Ed. Kazuma was the main character and he was hot headed, and always liked to destroy things and I thought my Typhlosion was an embodiment of his nature. Clyde (Gengar)- From classical Bonnie and Clyde. It was a spur of the moment and I was in Wayward cave and there were a bunch of haunters there and I love Haunters and Gengar so first I caught a male Haunter and so I said I'll catch two a girl and a boy and name them Bonnie and Clyde. I didn't expect Clyde to become my strongest Gengar and awesomest Pokemon. Flygirl (Flygon)- Me being totally lame and just called her Flygirl cause she was a cool Flygon and one I raised since it was a Trapinch in Saphire. Aizen (Tyranitar)- Cause Aizen from Bleach is so god damn evil and badass and everyone hates it when he gets into the picture. Draco (Dragonite)- No explanation needed. Gen 5 additions- Genju (Ditto)- Short version of Genjustsu from Naruto with expressed illusion and trickery even appearing like someone else. サマエル/Samael (Ononokusu/ Haxorus)- Cause he's a bad ass awesome dude and in shiny mode it's even better Calcifera (Chandelure)- I wanted my Chandelure to be a girl and so I named her after Calcifer from Howl's moving castle then again added an a for girlyness. Will
I can totally use this topic for +Infinitas names. All of my Pokémon's names are based off of a random attribute about said Pokémon in Latin, though many names are subject to multiple meanings. Amor (Gardevoir) - Love Gladius (Gallade) - Sword Silva (Sceptile) - Forest Flamma (Charizard) - Flame Macto (Infernape) - Hit/Fight Caenosus (Swampert) - Muddy Calamitas (Absol) - Calamity Amicus (Pikachu) - Friend Aeris (Rayquaza) - Air All May's Pokémon are the same, except in Japanese, barring Chaka, which was an original name. Tsubasa/翼 (Swellow) - Wing Nazo/謎 (Flygon) - Riddle (referencing Flygon's status as a mirage or an illusion of the desert) Atsu Kohan/厚鋼板 (Aggron) - Steel Plates Kirakuna/気楽な (Ludicolo) - Easy-Going Nozomi/望み (Jirachi) - Desire Yūjin/友人 (Pikachu) - Friend
Administrators Ikaru Posted October 28, 2011 Administrators Share Posted October 28, 2011 Long post incoming. More often than not, my names come from constellations or planets or something, if I'm really putting effort into the team. Most of them are pretty obvious if you just look it up; most recent names: Zoroark: Vulpecula (Fox) Gyarados: Volantis (Flying fish) Manectric: Sirius (This one's not so obvious; Sirius is the pet dog of the hunter Orion [also a constellation] and the brightest star in the sky) Formerly Pikachu: Carina (Also not obvious cause Pikachu was hard to find something for it; Carina is a keel which is basically the hull of a ship and what holds it all together. In this case, Pikachu was the reason I made the team) Darmanitan: Aries (Ram, cuz super strong physical attacks; yes, it's a stretch, I know.) Ferrothorn: Scutum (Shield) Mienshao: Libra (Scale, representing balance, since the fighting type has a few heavily implied references to being as close to the "light" type as Game Freak was willing to get in 5th gen) Others I may have used Scrafty: Lacerta (Lizard) Galvantula: Aranea (Big spider, more or less) Milotic: Aquarius (Water-bearer; alternatively, I sometimes used "Venus", which more or less went hand in hand with Milotic's inherent beauty aspect) Weavile: Orion (Mythological hunter; further emphasized by my use of Pursuit << >> though, I may use this name on other pokes too, immediately, Bisharp comes to mind, along with Terrakion and Groudon) Blaziken: Fornacis (Furnace) Liepard: Leo Minor (Small cat, or lion, I guess) Staraptor: Altair (Eagle, probably better used for something like Braviary but I just like the name in general anyway) The [s]six[/s] seven dragons of Deltora (Yep, totally original, but this was too good to pass up as a naming theme for mono-Dragon) Kingdra: Veritas (My most often used alt name, and for good reason. I like how it sounds >_> No but really, Veritas is the amethyst dragon, and shiny Kindgra just so happens to be purple.) Salamence: Fortuna (Dragon of the lapis lazuli; that is to say, blue. I also just like the sound of this name.) Dragonite: Fidelis (Dragon of the topaz, which is generally yellow or orange.) Hydreigon: Honora (Dragon of the emerald; shiny Hydreigon is mostly green.) Latias: Joyeu (Dragon of ruby, surprise, red! Also means "joy", obviously, and just look at its cute little face <3) Altaria: Forta (Dragon of the diamond, generally white and extremely hard to break. Cotton Guard, anyone?) Naturally, I can't fit 7 Pokemon on one team, and to even use the last dragon, it'd have to be in Ubers, cause short of Dialga I'm not sure who would represent Hopian, the Opal dragon. But there's another one I guess. http://en.wikipedia....racters#Dragons For reference. The seven names also have their own meanings but I couldn't really find a way to make them apply, short of Latias'. Hers was just perfect. Veritas: Truth Fortuna: Fortune Fidelis: Faith Honora: Honor Joyeu: Joy Forta: ...I don't remember this one. Will, help me. Hopian: Hope Needless to say I really love this series. Names I just use cuz wynaut Kyurem: Void (It represents the absence of Yin and Yang, which says enough to justify the name, I think) Alakazam: Mindfreak! (...speaks for itself) Breloom: Bellum (Latin for war, last I checked, and it sounds similar to Breloom as is) Porygon2: Analysis (Considering its background, that alone is enough, but also its abilities: Download and Trace [Not to mention Analytic, hurr]) Serperior: Emerald (cuz green and based off the emerald boa, loosely) Cresselia: Celestia (Favorite legendary gets an epic name, easily. Legendary based on the moon, so it fits) Darkrai: Nightmare (If you have to ask, just move on) Volcarona: Atlas (Same reason as Serperior, comes from what it's based on; the atlas moth) Bronzong: Clear Bell (also obvious, based on the item with the same name in G/S/C) Weavile: Mephiles (Weavile and I have quite a history, to be honest. I started with a typical "Shadow", then moved on to something at least somewhat more original in "Midnight", and then before the constellation thing was "Mephiles." See this. I think the connection can be drawn, if somewhat loosely.) Mismagius: Missy (A pet name for my dearest favorite Pokemon) Lapras: Railynn (...Honestly, I saw someone using this as a username a very very long time ago and liked it. Sounded like "rain" to me, so Lapras gets the nice-sounding name) Pre-constellation Manectric: Ixion (Lightning-based summon in Final Fantasy X [among other FFs, maybe?] that took the form of a lightning horse) Froslass: Shiva (See above, except, Ice-based and not a horse) Uxie: Knowledge Mesprit: Emotion Azelf: Willpower (These three were back in 4th gen and if you don't understand I should hit you.) Sceptile: Hayashi (Japanese for forest, I sometimes used Silva instead as the same end result, but Latin instead. THAT'S RIGHT WILL I DID THIS BEFORE I KNEW YOU EXISTED) Empoleon: Neptune (God of the sea in some culture, I sadly can't recall atm) Victini: Tsuna (Reborn! reference hardly anyone will understand) Lilligant: Princess (obvious) Sawsbuck: Sawsbuck-Win (Yes, that's right, I change it to Winter form and just leave the name. It's good enough) Chandelure: Insidias (Trap, Shadow Tag. Enough said, though it still fit before when I used Flash Fire, because one would assume it has Shadow Tag, resulting in DOUBLE the trap!) Raikou: Klystron/Kaminari (I switch between these two rather unstably, Kaminari being the obvious: Thunder; Klystron was something I heard ONCE, and only ONCE, and was like hey this sounds like Electron but better! [I also used it as the name of a Raikou evolution I spawned in an old fanfiction that.. Well, don't ask]) Suicune: Aurora/Borealis (Either one is painfully obvious and unoriginal. It's the reason I stopped using Suicune on one of my teams) Metagross: Platinum (Shiny form. Enough said) Noctowl: Nocturne (Also relatively obvious) Virizion: MyBoots Absol: Disaster (Even more obvious than some of the above) Giratina/Giratina-O: Renegade (Same source as Absol) Dragonite: Kairyu (This was before I spawned the seven dragons thing; Dragonite's japanese name sounds so much better) Aerodactyl: Phobos (One of Mars' moons, means "Fear") Celebi: Serenity (...I honestly don't know, it just seems fitting) Swellow: Zephyr (Wind-based name for a flying type? No way!) Jirachi: Wishmaker And the naming scheme I use for most others because if I kept going with the above section I'd never stop Generally, if all else fails, I spawn a name based on the pokemon's type or design. This often results in really bad names. Examples: Moltres: Blazewing Rotom-H: Firebolt (More commonly I just use Plasmabolt for any of the Rotom forms) Carracosta: Kabutops 2.0 Sigilyph: Xatu 2.0 ...yeah, I should stop this now. inb4edits. Dragonz996
Dragon Team Refer to this for more info if needed: http://www.woodus.com/den/games/dwm2gbc/families.php Poseidon (Gyarados) - Strongest Water type monster in the game, conveniently named after the Greek god of the sea. Niterich (Dragonite) - I was searching for a nickname for him when I recalled a monster named "Niterich", and Dragonite has "nite" in his name so I decided to name him that. Gorago (Garchomp) - Strongest Beast type monster in the game, and Garchomp looks beast Orligon (Salamence) - Strongest Dragon type monster in the game, Salamence happens to look more dragon-like compared to the rest. Dragonzord (Haxorus) - I compared him to Dragonzord from Power Rangers once, and found some similarities. Someone needs to give him green skin. Darkdrium (Hydreigon) - Strongest Boss type monster in the game, Hydreigon's Dark/Dragon type so it matches the name too. Dragon Team v2.0 Replaced Gyarados and Haxorus with: Titanis (Heatran) - Strongest Devil type monster in the game, Heatran looks like some form of Titan, depending on what you think a Titan looks like. GoldGolem (Metagross) - Strongest Material type monster in the game, Shiny Metagross has a Gold X on his face and looks a little Golem-like to me. Rain Teams Oh yes, I have many Rain Teams << >> Drizzly (Politoed) - The heart and soul of all my Rain Teams, named after his famous ability Drizzle. Croakcaine (Toxicroak) - ToxiCROAK + CoCAINE Neptune (Kingdra) - Inspired by King Neptune (yay happy Spongebob childhood memories) Lily (Cradily) - Cradily looks like a flower... somewhat Livolt (Manectric) - Manectric's Japanese name Niterain (Dragonite) - Rain version of Dragonite Mootank (Miltank) - What a cow << >> Crimson (Scizor) - Scizor's red and crimson's my favourite shade of red, if it is a shade of red Genesis (Genesect) - GENES(I)Sect, -ect Zapbird (Zapdos) - One of the Bird type monsters in DWM2. Oceanus (Keldeo) - Something to do with Greek mythology, I forgot Amy (Lapras) - Amy debuted soon after I started league, her signature Pokemon's Lapras too. Kappa (Ludicolo) - Ludicolo's based on Kappa Wrath (Poliwrath) - PoliWRATH Blastank (Blastoise) - BLASToise + tank, since it has two cannons O-Zone (Magnezone) - I thought of ozone when I was thinking of a nickname for it WaterBalloon (Jellicent) - It looks like a balloon, and he's Water-type Gore (Gorebyss) - GOREbyss, also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhino_%28wrestler%29 Vapor (Vaporeon) - VAPOReon Ikacruel (Tentacruel) - tent(IK)ACRUEL, yay squid~ Roguewave (Kyogre) - Roguewave's one of the Water type monsters in DWM2 Rayne (Manaphy) - Another spelling of Rain, also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madison_Rayne Mewtant (Mewtwo) - MEWtwo + muTANT
Will
Forta: ...I don't remember this one. Will, help me.
idk, man, but random guess...Fortitude? That's what I thought too; it sounds closer than anything else could. ~Ikaru EDIT: Sorry I keep stealing your post, Will, but it doesn't really merit a new post << >> I did some googling and found that Forte (which is obviously close to Forta) means "by chance" or "by luck", so maybe it's Luck instead... though that seems too close to Fortune aaaaaahhhhhh why so confusing book. Inuki suggested something too but I don't remember what, all I know was it sounded good.
Maelstrom
Blastoise: Maelstrom- Used to be Blaster or BlasterX, but I didn't feel it was original enough. Then it changed to match my own current tag: Maelstrom- a superlarge, powerful whirlpool that will drag entire ships to the oceans depths. Also used as a synonym for a powerful vortex or storm. Gengar: Ishamael- used to be Umbral Star, umbral meaning dark. It is now known as Ishamael, the Betrayer of Hope- a character reference to a powerful human who defected to the dark side because he could not abide being overshadowed as being merely no 2. The character in turn being a reference to Samael. Alakazam: Claire- for some reason, I somehow relate it to Sabrina, the infamous psychic gym leader. Machamp: Brutus- need I explain this? Torkoal: Gamera. Google this giant movie monster. Gamera has long been considered the rival franchise to Toho's Godzilla franchise. Torterra: Gaia/Atlas- another that doesn't need explanation. Zen
I tend to name my pokemon after cartoon characters if I name them at all. Zack tends to use optical, medical, and pharmaceutical terminology. Ian uses names from his favorite books.
