i was at the grocery store when it hit.

ten minutes earlier, the streets were totally dry.

then the hail started coming down.

i got a text saying there was a funnel cloud forming directly above my house

and looking down at my phone, that's when i noticed that a layer of water was crawling across the tile floor

a few minutes later and the entire staff was armed with mops and brooms to try and escort the increasing water out of the store.

the tornado alarms sounded, and then a city flash flood notice.

like, no shit, sherlock.

my mom told me she could see debris swirling around in the air above our house.

i asked her if i would be safer at the store than there. she didn't have an answer.

after some deliberation she decided to try to come get me.

she got stuck in three and a half foot water sitting at an intersection

so i tried to catch the bus

the stoplights were all out, so the traffic was completely senseless, but following some girl in a neon tank who was bolder than i, we managed to cut through it. nevermind the the fuss some of the drivers made about it.

i caught a bus with a plucky driver, who didn't seem to mind that when she opened the door to pick me up, she took part of the river with her.

in fact, she embraced it, saying things like "welcome to the huckleberry finn bus experience" and "does anyone have contact information for one 'noah'? we're gonna need an ark".

which i personally appreciated since even in the middle of a flash flood, i happen to think rain was gorgeous, and tornadoes aside, i was quite enthused.

i was not quite so enthused when i stepped out of the bus into knee deep water

and had no idea where side walks started or ended, or where there were objects when i crossed others' flooded yards, chatting with the people looking on from their front doors, camera phones at the ready.

i got word from my mother while hopping across stone fences that she had broken free from traffic, but still couldn't get to me because,

when i got to the part in the third picture, the water was waist-deep.

and apparently cars don't do very well in that kind of water.

so that was fun.

i made it home unscathed, although soaking and totally numb,

but all in all i rate flash floods 7.8/10 too much water

so that was my afternoon.

I'm sitting here complaining about my internet, thinking I had a bad afternoon.

Welp~

I'll go ahead and guess everything should be stable, considering you've managed to post this.

No really, we hope you're all right .__.

Glad you made it back safe, question, was there a tornado that hit near you?

EDIT: There were 2 tornados that struck today, One near Glendon/Dale Iowa at 7:07 CST and one near Marshall North Dakota, the desc says "Very brief touchdown, Funnel cloud with dust being kicked up underneath." This other one occurred at 7:37 PM CST.

Scrennies for both tornados

Torn 1: http://prntscr.com/7l0lvk

Torn 2: http://prntscr.com/7l0m1a

Alright...who let Primal Kyogre loose?

Seriously. Flash floods are super scary to people like me who never experienced them. Even Hurricane Sandy wasn't that bad when it came to where I live.

And tornados...geez...the entire concept of tornados seems so surreal to me (despite the term project I did on tornados in 8th grade for my earth science class).

Good to see you're at least safe~

That brings back memories of 2006 (or somewhere close to that). I was down at my Grandparents house when a Tornado passed by his house about a mile away (or two, but I know it was really close). Thankfully, the road he lives off of was designed to keep water off it, but right off the intersection it was completely flooded. That was a long week for me. Anyways, glad you're safe and that's quite an interesting story.

Good god it's not just Texas that was underwater?

texas, louisiana, and oklahoma are all receiving massive amounts of rain. colorado is just so close im guessing it got caught up in it too. the red river here in louisiana is especially bad since all the water oklahoma and texas are getting is going straight into it and flooding major cities along the river here.

If I was there, I would have put on my trunks and gone swimming/wading. I did that the last time a major flash flood hit our area.

All in all, sounds like a lot of excitement and fun.

have fun soakin in dat poopoo water

And here i am complaining about a thunderstorm with heavy rain that's going for 3 days already, hope it doesn't degenerate in a flood....on the other hand it'll be really fun to swim on the streets.
