Dragon116
With all due respect to Timber Dragon's marvelous post, there are some serious flaws in it. However, many things mentioned are so spot on. I'll take some time over the next few days to break it down as I see it from my experience. 1) "Pokemon Reborn isn't a cakewalk like the official games." This is very true. The closest I have come to this level of difficulty has been during speed runs. The way Ame places pokemon so that it would be difficult to find anything powerful enough to take advantage of type trumping is fantastic. In the normal games, I have done a non-speed run with just my starter and a HM user. Pokemon Reborn takes that concept, chews it up, spits it out, and lights it on fire. You will need to keep a well-trained team of 6 pokemon or you will suffer. 2)"Pokemon Reborn hates you. It will kick you while you're down, it will make you its bitch, and you will love it." True, but not for the reasons you think (Well, unless you're into that). At any given time, your team will need adjustment or you will need to surgically repair your keester after the gym leader finishes ramming their fist up it. Even when your team is polished, and you think you have type advantage, it will still abuse you with sweepers. Kiki, the fighting gym leader, is a fantastic example of this. Even if you brought flying and psychic, her team is so well honed that they will tear them apart before you can do any significant damage. Of course, you could spends hours and hours on end grinding for the perfectly bred pokemon, and have a better chance of making the gym leader your bitch, but if you enjoy life, that's not what you're going to do. What you're going to do is actually have to use *gasp* strategy (and significant praying to RNGJesus). I ended up beating that gym after using the disable and pumble strategy, which ended up working after about 50 tries. The only thing that kept me going was that story, and that is why I love Pokemon Reborn. 3) "Reborn sees your level grinding, and raises you a LEVEL CAP" If you're maxing out your level cap in the early game (currently I'm as far as Luna), you suck. Even Pokemon Reborn does not require that. What it does do, however, is make sure you have a team of 6 balanced members, able to take on different challenges. It also encourages you to swap members out, since there is plenty of "easy" training to get those new members up to scratch. In general, you can be about 5 levels under your cap and still win without much hassle. If you're using common candies, it's time to reconsider your team and why you need to keep them so damn high leveled. 4) "You will live as a hobo" This is far out of date. First, I don't even think you can get magikarp anymore. Second, why the hell do you care? Seriously, when was the last time you went into a pokemart pre E4 for anything besides pokeballs and tampons for an NPC? The only time this hasn't been the case for me is during a speed run, where I'm buying up x-attacks and the like. Quite frankly, everything is the same price as regular games. Ame was even generous enough to give you a starting sum of cash. In addition, "after you beat the first gym" is the exact same as regular games. When have you ever been able to find ultra balls and nuggets in generous amount before the first gym? I usually don't have any serious funds until the fourth gym, and even then I really don't care because I don't meet tampon starved NPCs that frequently. TMs, Battle Items, and generally end game stuff IS STILL END GAME STUFF. Stop whining. Ame is right to say no, you're spoiled. 5) "If at first you don't succeed..." Right on point! Depending on your team and the effort you put into keeping pokemon ready for rotation, this game will alter between ungodly difficult (fighting gym for me, Arceus for most) and pathetically simple (psychic double battle against slow weakinglings? meet emolga's discharge and sandslash's earthquake). If you're expecting to go in and sweep everything, give it up. That level cap should have tipped you off that this was not a game for casuals. There's a reason one of the NPC opponents tells you to save frequently, and it's not because he's recruiting for Arceus. 6) "Gym leaders have no soul and receive sustenance from your hatred." Again, it will vary depending on your team and the effort you put in. The post byTwin Judge of Gemini gives a perfect example. Even after getting their team leveled, it took some tries for the sister to win. That's the game. You need strategy and some significant praying to RNGJesus sometimes to beat these soulless abominations. No, you cannot just go in with type-trumping pokemon. Even Smok3iT had to use a fire type at a fighting gym. Meanwhile I used everything from a fighting type to a ground type to win. This is Pokemon Reborn, not the Tampax store. Grow a pair of nuts/ovaries, and figure it out. Gyms are bosses like they ought to be, not like the wusses that constitute your "challenge" in the regular games. 7) "Beating gym leader =/= badge for level cap" Again, if you're hitting the level cap, you suck. These fights are not that difficult. It's not even a surprise anymore where you don't get a level rise. However, storywise it is obnoxious when you don't get a badge. Quite frankly, the gym leaders are assholes when they don't. They know their obligations, and instead of fulfilling them, they dillydally and *surprise* you don't get it. Maybe it's better they're not gym leaders anymore. If they don't consider themselves worthy adversaries, they don't need to be around. 8) "Reborn has Tall Poppy syndrome and gardening sheers are quickly used." GOOD! What kind of game would it be if I could max out early in the game? Rushing through with an overpowered Gyrados, Magmar, or Alakazam would ruin the challenge. Timber explained this point perfectly, and I fully agree. No one pokemon should be able to carry you through the game. This game is about a team of 6 balanced pokemon that can take on different challenges. All RPGs have this issue, and Ame fixes it here by keeping the game balanced and removing or relocating the overpowered ones until the time they're needed and/or deemed fair to use. Plus, it also allows for flexibility on Ame's part during each new episode. 9) "This guy is Fern. Fern is not a nice person." Fern might as well be from Team Meteor tbh. Is he a dick? Yes. Is Solaris a dick? Yes. Are every team leader in the offical games dicks? Yes. I will give extra credit to Fern's dickishness though. When you're in that cage and he's the only way you get out, he's ruthless. However, he does keep his agreement, unlike what I could expect from Solaris or any of the other team leaders in the official games. Sometimes you just gotta see the positives in those turd people. 10) "In the end, it boils down to YOU!" Yes and no. In general, yes, you are the only thing that will give yourself a chance of victory. However, credit must also be given to RNGJesus for those lucky saves that we have all been given. Even Timber agrees. Bad AI aside, when you get those needed criticals, secondary effects, or an opponent's attack misses, you can thank RNGJesus. This game is hard, and in the end it will come down to whether you have a clear victory path. Anyone with experience in speedruns understands this principle. YOu may be significantly underpowered, but the game gives you every opportunity you need to have a team capable of overcoming its challenges. Only those that can appreciate each pokemon's uniqueness will be able to beat this game. It is not merely a matter of finding the Haxorus or Mewtwo that is capable of annihilating everything. 11) "If all else fails..." You damn well right you're on your own. This game is not for casuals, as I stated previously, and as other posters suggested. There are still great pokemon out there that have significant weaknesses but can be just the thing for what you need. Fury Cutter Kricketune seems to be popular. For me, I like Belly Drum Hariyama. Assuming RNGJesus lets my Emolga/Gumpig/Camrupt disable the opponent with sleep, confuse, or paralyze, belly drum hariyama will come in and clean house. In fact, I managed to clear 3 of the fight gym's pokemon with that before therapist (heh) hitmonlee took it out. And when Arceus tried to kick my butt, a helping dose of paralysis and a belly drum close combat did wonders to clear it away. Lostelle
This should be good, I'll stick around for it. BIGJRA
I agree with your points on #3, although usually I end up using common candies only when grinding up a weak party member, since the rest of my team gets exp, sometimes too much.
Vinny
I just wanna go ahead and mention that Timber's been away for a while, so of course things changed, updates, the AI sucking, and other stuff. But only she shall update that herself, and consider that she isn't here, it shall stay they way it is for now. As for what I've read so far, I shall only say this: 3) "Reborn sees your level grinding, and raises you a LEVEL CAP" If you're maxing out your level cap in the early game (currently I'm as far as Luna), you suck. The level cap helps preventing this: In the normal games, I have done a non-speed run with just my starter and a HM user. more than anything. What difference would make Julia's pokemons having competitive move-set and good items, if you can just get a starter to it's last evolution before the first gym. Regardless, you're still right. It's also to make sure you swap your pokémons around, and have a strategy that doesn't rely on overlevelling your pokes and power through the gym leaders/important battles. I must also admit that I still have to use a Common Candy on my game. They're probably all rotten in my bag or something. I'll stick around for this too~
Commander
2)"Pokemon Reborn hates you. It will kick you while you're down, it will make you its bitch, and you will love it." The only thing that kept me going was that story, and that is why I love Pokemon Reborn. Some leaders do...other leaders, not quite so much. The field effects do help a lot of them out (and I could go on and on how much I fell in love with them when designing the hardcore versions) and really bring out some unique fighting styles. I do like seeing new player's thoughts because when you play Reborn enough, the leaders seem to be "easy" compared to someone who's never faced it (Julia kicked my butt 5 times before I defeated her the first time). And Vinny, yes the AI will do stupid things, but tbh, there was a test on a certain new Noel Pokemon in hardcore and it surprisingly used the right move 80% of the time (and I thought it was going to attack spam). Singles AI performs very well, but it isn't perfect. Doubles AI is a bit...idiotic sometimes which is why I had to get rid of a certain move on a certain Illumise (cough*Dazzling Gleam*cough). Shelly and Radomus are the only ones who are really hurt by this.

Twin Judge of Gemini
agree on #3, unless its the 3 gym battle with level restricted, and note that it also have some important battle, which means level up is really easy to happen beside that, you forgot that overleveling didn't mean your problem's out I just saw my sis fight Blake with 70-something team, and she still need to retry some times before she could win it :v field manipulation and good story is pretty much the reason I'm still here(ignoring my SM view anyway :v)

Foamy
If you're maxing out your level cap in the early game (currently I'm as far as Luna), you suck. Even Pokemon Reborn does not require that. This is certainly true, but I think Timber Dragon's original post was already implying this. She was saying that subpar players will often overlevel their Pokémon to compensate for their lack of skill, which Reborn's level cap puts a stop to. If you create a well-balanced team, give them decent movesets, and play smart, then the level cap will hardly be an issue. In other words, the level cap in Pokémon Reborn does not exist to make the experience harder, but to encourage players to up their game. Maybe it's better they're not gym leaders anymore. If they don't consider themselves worthy adversaries, they don't need to be around. There are viable situations to use Common Candies in. One, if you use traded Pokemon, such as the powerful Braveheart the Litleo (pre-15), it is quite easy for them to over level due to their XP boost. And two, challenge runs. Things like Mono-Type/Gen/Color/Ect. runs severly limit the pokemon available and force the player to go on with less pokemon, thus each pokemon receives far more XP. I started a Mono-Fire run the other day, and, since I refuse to use Pansear because I hate all the elemental monkeys let's be clear-I love Infernape, I only have access to a Braxien, Numel, and Litleo pre-Florina. It's not hard at all, but since I only have three Pokemon, I am forced to only actually use Litleo in the battles throughout the school due to both Braxien and Numel already being at 25 by the time I actually got to the pokemon center. And at that time, Litleo already has shot up to level 19 after I had just beaten the Mechanightmare to obtain it, then gone straight to the school. In challenge runs, it is extremely likely you will require Common Candies in the early game due to a lack of diversity unless you do a completionist run obviously. There's nothing that actually needs to be reconsidered there, but you will need to monitor your Pokemon's levels closely so you don't end up with a team of monsters that don't listen to you that are on fire. Also, to address the second portion of #7, neither Corey nor Kiki are in the world of the living anymore. Both of them died in real life, which is why they perished in game. People like Aya will take their spots in the in game league so don't worry, you'll get your badge in due time.
Don42
Gotta super disagree with you on #3. Sure, you don't need to hit the level cap, but if you do/need to, you suck? Harsh. More to the point, I personally prefer to not actually get a whole bunch of pokemon, just 5-6 that can all handle different threats. Team is generally 5 real pokemon + 1 pokemon with 4 HM moves. a 6th pokemon generally in the box. And even then, that's over time. I generally don't have 5 pokemon I actually want to use until maybe Kiki/Aya. I hit the level cap because those are the only pokemon I want to use, or need to use. So they get a strong bit of EXP. That doesn't mean that I don't use strategy to beat the gyms, that just means I use the same pokemon consistently. As I'm sure many other people do. And as someone mentioned before, anyone doing any type of special run generally needs to hit that level cap to not get wrecked. So yeah, saying people suck for hitting level cap is kind of...presumptuous, I guess? Certainly isn't very kind haha
Dragon116
@ Hypa - A tampon in this situation is an object that is completely pointless and the only point is to make that NPC send you elsewhere to piss you off. @ AuthorReborn - Point taken on the monoruns because you only have a few to rely on. However, if you're hitting the level cap on traded pokemon, you're over relying on them. That means the rest of your team is slacking and you chose poorly. In regards to your 2nd point, I didn't want to put an ugly spoiler over my point. Anyone who reached that points knows what I mean, and anyone who hasn't won't be spoiled. Yes, I'm aware of that I'll get the badge later. If you read my previous points, you'll see I mentioned I was up to Luna at the time I started this. Currently sitting at Blake. @ Don42 - The point of the level cap is for you to raise multiple pokemon. Yes, you could rely on one pokemon, but as Vinny said above, the level cap is meant to restrict you from doing that. So you suck for abusing your poor pokemon Edited June 30, 2015 by Dragon116

Certainly isn't very kind haha Poor Bidoof T.T on another side, we have TMX, which won't hinder us that bad
Don42
@ Don42 - The point of the level cap is for you to raise multiple pokemon. Yes, you could rely on one pokemon, but as Vinny said above, the level cap is meant to restrict you from doing that. So you suck for abusing your poor pokemon I mean, that may be right, but I assumed it was to make it so you can't...you know, over level and win via brute force. And abuse is a strong word man! Its more like...my pokemon are all hyper competitive, so they want to battle. Over and over and over and over and over again. Yeah, that's it.
