Bibs runs through Pokémon Alternate Evolutions...and he's gonna catch 'em all

Eyyyy! Bibs here! Today I'll bring you my newest run. It's one that I've been wanting to do for some time. The game I'll be playing is Pokémon Alternate Evolutions, a Fire Red hack. The plot is left untouched (mostly), same with the maps and the sprites. Then what makes this game interesting? Well, there are the changes in text at some places, minor new events, new Pokémon, changed movepools and stats, and overall a more challenging game that includes 271 Pokémon. But the most important about this hack is that the evolutions have been changed. As far as I know, no Fakemons are present, but Pokémon will evolve into Pokémon they normally wouldn't evolve into.

And I will attempt to catch them all. All 271 Pokémon. Have I gone mad? Nope, I was already. Another thing: I am allowed to only catch basic Pokémon. Pokémon that have already evolved aren't eligible to catch for me. And yet another thing: I'll be using screenshots.

Is there even more I need to type here? I don't think so. If there is, I'll edit it in later. Lesgo!

Part 1: A short start

I'm pretty sure that there is supposed to be a Nidoran F there. Pawniard is the first Pokémon to be confirmed!

This is the first thing you'll notice that has changed in the game. Well, except for the Pawniard in the intro, that is.

And we're here, in the lab. I skipped the talk with my mom, which also had changed dialogue. She called me an ungrateful bastard.

I'm hurt.

And here we have our three starter choices. Chikorita, Squirtle and Charmander. And I'll let you choose which starter I'm going to take. Now, before you take your pick, I want to let you know that the evolutions have changed, so it's likely that if you pick Chikorita to get Meganium or Charmander to get Charizard, you'll be disappointed later on. Plus, the base stats have been edited so that all of them have about equal stats.

A final note: you are allowed to speculate in this thread about which Pokémon will evolve into what. However, only speculate about the basic Pokémon that have been confirmed already. Also, if you have played this game before or know about some of the evolutions, please don't spoil. I know about some of them as well (like the starters' final evolutions) but there are people that don't want to get all the evolutions thrown at them already.

Yes, some Pokémon evolve into a Pokémon with a completely different typing, but the starters will keep their typing through their evolutionary line. I'm not saying they won't get a second type, though.

Well...it was a tiebreaker. See for yourself which starter I chose. And who knows? Maybe Chikorita's final evolution IS Venusaur. Wouldn't be the weirdest thing to happen.

There are some occasions in which they do, yes. I know of at least two of them. Legendaries are also basic Pokémon, y'know. But the evolutions will mostly be logical, so Cyndaquil -> Haunter -> Magikarp is NOT going to happen. Also, not all evolutions have changed. If you tuned in to see every Pokémon evolve into something different...you could be disappointed. Most still do, though.

Part 2a: Rival Assface and lots of catches

I went for Squirtle for two reasons. The first one being that I used Chikorita in my previous run (a nuzlocke that was abandoned after Misty) and the second one being an early available Chikorita.

Named Darwin because his evolution theory is going to get fucked in this run in more ways than one. Surprised that he has Shell Armor instead of Torrent? In this hack, Squirtle can have both Torrent and Shell Armor. Chikorita can have Overgrow and Chlorophyll, I think? No idea what Charmander's second ability is next to Blaze. Notice the Oran Berry.

Note: I took Darwin's Oran Berry before going into battle. It would be a waste since you always win the first rival battle.

About all the wild Pokémon found in Route 1. Their levels range from 3 to 5. Snubbull, Poochyena, Zigzagoon, Taillow and Spearow added to the confirmed list.

I couldn't help it, I had to beat some of those wild mons up T.T

Notable is that Squirtle didn't get Bubble through levelling, but Water Gun, which is awesome.

Since this is changed dialogue, it's safe to assume that Fearow appears in this hack too. Fearow, confirmed!

Now we can finally get to catch some Pokémon, ayyy! Let's start by catching everything in Route 1!

In loving memory of my Zigzagoon/Linoone in my Sapphire nuzlocke, which was also called Wanda. Wanda's ability is Hustle. As if STAB Headbutt at level 9 wasn't powerful enough yet. Zigzagoon caught!

Uuuuugh. I dislike Snubbull sooo much. The first one going to the box is you. Snubbull caught.

In loving memory of the Spearow I had in my Leaf Green nuzlocke. Yes, I'll name a lot of my Pokémon after the ones I used in nuzlockes or that appear in nuzlocke comics. I'm terrible. Anyway, looking at Ria's ability, I think I know what her final evolution will be. Not 100% sure, but about 70%. Spearow caught!

Another reference to one of my nuzlockes. Anyway, Ranmari doesn't seem to be very special yet. Poochyena caught!

The last one of the Route 1 mons. Honestly surprised I managed to catch all five mons with those five Poké Balls I got from Oak. This name's a reference to both one of the Ruby Destiny series, and one of my nuzlockes (again). Guts seems legit enough. Can't really discover anything new on him. Taillow caught!

This name's a reference to the Makuhita/Hariyama from Landwalker's Sapphire nuzlocke comic. If you occasionally read nuzlocke comics, I can recommend this one. But that's off-topic. If we look at Rikishi, we see that he's a fucking god holy shit. The only thing it needs to completely destroy everything is a STAB move. Makuhita caught!

This is called No because it's short for "No, I'm not going to use this creature, get out". Never liked Natu anyway. At least it didn't suck up about five of my Poké Balls... Natu caught.

I think I got everything in Route 22, so I passed on to Route 2. Ledyba, huh. Never really liked Ledyba, tbh. Pretty mediocre in battle. Although, pretty much every single Pokémon in this hack is usable, so maybe I'll try to use her later. Maybe. Ledyba caught.

Part 2b: Rival Assface again and Viridian Forest

Don't interpret the name wrong. This thing made me use four Poké Balls. Four. She better be worth it. Roselia caught.

Holy mother of Arceus. This is a Trapinch. A Bug/Ground Trapinch. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH CREATOR OF THIS HACK UGUUUUUUU

I mean uh. Cool. Definitely going to use him, especially since I caught him with my last Poké Ball and I don't have money to buy more. Trapinch caught!

There we have another three Pokémon that also appeared on Route 2. Teddiursa is kinda cool, so is Caterpie. I don't really like Weedle, though. I'm hyped for usable Butterfree :]

...Oh yeah, no Poké Balls. Shite. Teddiursa, Caterpie and Weedle confirmed.

Nice team I've got there. Not really any notable moves the Pokémon learned. Rikishi learned Arm Thrust, Ria Fury Attack, Wanda Headbutt and Ballsucker Leech Seed and Poison Sting. Huh. Leech Seed is actually decent. This will be the team with which I'll battle...

Another one bites the dust. Shelmet confirmed. Seriously, Assface, using Bide on a Flying type with your Shelmet isn't smart.

This was more tricky. He first sent out Taillow, and I chose Darwin for obvious reasons. But suddenly, Assface got a brain, and switched Chikorita in on my second Water Gun. Went for Ria then, who got poisoned by Poisonpowder, but defeated Chikorita. After that, Darwin sent Taillow packing too. End of battle, to Viridian Forest!

After buying some new Poké Balls with the money I got from the Bug Catchers and Assface, I decided to explore the grass that has been added in Pewter City.

And I found this. It's sad that early game Poliwag is utter crap, since I like them. Going to be on the team for Brock, but will probably get boxed after that. Poliwag, caught!

It had to appear. It just had to. I'm sorry, Lord Nuzlocke, but you're kinda weak right now, and kind of inferior to Ballsucker. I am so sorry for boxing you, Lord Nuzlocke. Seedot, caught!

And the last Pokémon I'll catch for this episode. The name comes from Locke's Emerald Hard Mode, in which Amiga was the most awesome mon of the entire run. On the team! Sorry for Wanda and Ria, but their usage against Brock would be...very low. Lotad, caught!

This guy apparently also appears in Pewter City. Machop isn't bad, but I just don't need it atm. Should have caught one of these instead of Tyrogue. Machop confirmed.

Last time, we saw that our next opponent would be May! What kind of surprises could she hold for us?

Well...first two evolutions. Sorry to everyone that got their hopes up for the first alternate evolutions, but I knew these two would happen. Hey, at least you know that Wartortle's evolution will be alternate, right? Lombre and Wartortle added to the caught list.

The team which I will be battling Brock with. Normally you'd think I wouldn't have to prepare this much for the mere Rock-type leader, right? Get out.

And then I remembered what Onix evolves from in this hack. And suddenly it all makes sense.

You better. Anyway, if you want to try this hack, watch out for Shuckle, Nosepass, Aron and Onix. Larvitar and Geodude go down fairly easy, but if you don't have a Water type, Shuckle is going to give you hell of a time... And don't even try going into this place without any Grass- or Water types.

Extra 1: New Pokémon

I had to put this in a new post, because image limit. Oops.

Notice how Gina isn't Ghost/Poison, but Ghost/Ice. Also notice the Powder Snow. It's godlike. Only sad that's her nature is Impish, but hey, you can't have everything. Looking at her defense stat, I don't even think the nature is that bad... Gastly caught!

Interestingly enough, Based knows Mega Drain. And his stats aren't bad either. Sadly, it has Swarm instead of Shield Dust. Anyway, Caterpie caught!

Meanwhile, Freya does have her Shield Dust. She doesn't have Mega Drain like Caterpie, but hey, can't have everything. Weedle caught.

I'd rather use Caterpie and Weedle than you. I'm not even kidding. My god. You're horrible. Shelmet caught.

Speaking about terrible Pokémon, how is Psywave as your only move a legit thing? Sigh. Misdreavus caught.

The Pokémon we've all been waiting for... Ladies and gentlemen, Forgotten the Surskit! Name is because it gets forgotten too much. She doesn't seem bad to me, only low power attacking moves. But who cares, Modest nature! Surskit caught!

And after Forgotten, we move to...this thing. Uh. Uh. Uh. Box. Spinarak caught.

Then there was Maxima. Named after the Murkrow/Honchkrow from the nuzlocke comic 'Tales of Sinnoh'. That one was male, and called Maximus. He was also the biggest bro ever. I hope that Maxima will live up to his standards. Murkrow caught!

Adamant Pichu. Boring. I hope Pichu won't evolve into Pikachu in this hack. Really, I hope so. I'm kinda afraid to find out, though. Pichu caught.

Ursa Maior joins the team! I like Teddiursa, tbh, but she still seems a bit weak to me at the moment. Teddiursa caught!

Machop caught too! Awesome that I managed to catch one, but...well, Rikishi is doing very good right now. So he won't be in the team yet.

Gotta keep your Pokémon in rotation. With this team, I'll do Mt. Moon and some other areas. Except for Ria learning Aerial Ace, there wasn't really anything special to be found while grinding...or was there?

I can't believe I forgot that there were wild Chikorita in Viridian Forest. The 1% encounter rate was real. Found this one while grinding, realized I had only two Poké Balls, said fuck it, and caught it in the first one I threw. Thank you Gina for the Hypnosis. Anyway, I would put him on the team, buuuuut I kinda already grinded the others. But no problem, he will certainly be on the team that will battle Misty! Chikorita...caught!

You nailed it. The Sturdy made me instantly think of Skarmory.

The nuzlocke forum is where I got the .ips patch for this game, tbh. But I've never read more than small chunks of Alternate Evolution lockes. In fact, the only one I read a bit of was Perfect Apple's randomized Alternate Evolutions, if you know that.

So yesterday I didn't update my run, so today we get two updates! Best idea NA. Anyway.

Part 5: The blues of Cerulean

And we start off by battling and utterly destroying the Super Nerd guarding the fossils. Koffing, Sableye and Kadabra confirmed.

I picked the Dome Fossil, because fuck Helix, nobody likes Omastar.

One of the first things a person said to me as soon as I got to Cerulean. Huh. Just so you guys know, this man originally wanted to trade a Poliwhirl for a Jynx. I think the trades have been thrown out.

Grass. Huh. Wonder which dragons I'll find in here.

...But first, Route 4! The first Pokémon I caught there is this Tangela. Vinegar makes me a bit sad, since there is no Regenerator in gen III, but hey, Tangela's defense is pretty freaking high, so shouldn't complain. Tangela caught!

If I had seen your comment before catching Electrike, Omega, I'd have named him Rader. But I hadn't, because I always am farther in the game than I am with my screenshots. Sorry :/

Anyway, Electrike. A cool Electric-type mon. Electrike, caught!

I love Houndour, but not as much as I love Houndoom. This is great!

...Well, considering Shepherd will evolve into Houndoom. Houndour, caught!

And now we go to Cerulean City. Our first catch there is Kina. Huh. I honestly don't understand all the fangirling about Ralts, especially not gen III Ralts. It's really not as good as people make it look. Ralts, caught.

So that's what he ment by dragons. Dratini is apparently a Dragon/Water-type in this hack, with Marvel Scale as its ability. Hint hint. Dratini, caught.

After Natu and Ralts, I finally get a Psychic-type I do like, and it's Adamant. Fucking ugh. These creatures kept running away with their Teleport. Annoyed me to no end. Abra, caught. With that, I caught every Pokémon in Cerulean as well. Time to grind for the Rival battle...

Oh. Well. Then this happened. Cool. Was about damn time, since Surskit was being pretty damn weak. Did I forget to mention Masquerain is Bug/Water too? Masquerain, caught!
