Pokemon Roots and Branches

Recommended Posts

Hi I've been working on these fangames for most of the year now but so far I really only have battle sprites for some of the major characters, the story written out for one of the games, Roots, rough drafts of some of the maps, and a very small handful of the events in game. Thus I really need a lot of help trying to make these two games come to reality. Here's some information about the games.

Welcome to the Shani Region. A region that isn't going through some sort of ecologic turmoil. However that doesn't mean that the political situation between the league members is stable. Lately there has been a rift between the gym leaders while the elite four and the champion are sitting back doing nothing.

Synopsis

Roots: You recently got your license to be a pokemon trainer so you and your neighbor, Kari, get your first pokemon. You set off on your journey, defeating the eight gym leaders while running into Team Edge, and befriending a mysterious trainer, along the way.
Branches: You are running away from home with a Mareep. So you go to the city where the region's professor is to get a second pokemon so you could hope to survive the constant double battles. However, you run into Team Edge in several places and figured that something should be done with them. So you look for former Pokemon League members to help you stop them.

Protagonists

In Roots you get the young Peter and Mandy, while in Branches you get to play 17 year old Blake or Alley.

Planned Features

  • All 721 pokemon are catchable, including starters.
  • Double battles, lots and lots of them
  • Minigames
  • An interesting post game event
  • A few fakemon (Like 4)
  • Multiple endings in both games.

I might have some other things planned for these games but at the moment they're just ideas and may be scrapped.

Update: The game will be released episodically like Reborn however that will take a while as I am redoing and reworking a lot of the sprites.

Sorry I wrote that post when I was in a bit of a rush. I need help with mapping for some parts of the region as well as spriting and programing because I plan to have some events be different depending on what character you play. For example If you're playing as Mandy you get an event where you talk to Blake whereas if you're playing Peter during that same event you're gonna talk to Alley.

Here are some updated versions of the 4 player characters though some places need to be worked on.

Hey ^_^! Nice to see more people working on fan games.

Anyway I would umm touch up on those sprites. Try to make them similar to nintendos sprites. Like fireheart says I would recommend sticking with gen 3 sprites, there A LOT easier to draw than gen 4 ones. I would offer to help sprite but I honestly suck really bad at spriting but I consider myself decent at mapping. If you need help mapping something just give me a pm and I'll see what I can do.

i would touch up the sprites more

Make them look like they would fit in a gen 3 pokemon game (just like reborn)

Other than that, I am immediately interested and if you need a tester, don't hesitate to message

Yeah I'm working on it, and since you're interested I'll message you as soon as I can.

Well quite honestly the sprites were a lot smaller because the gen 4 and 5 sprites I've been using are smaller than what would be used for a pokemon essentials game, so I've been working on trying to make them bigger. However I think I may have found a way to make them more like gen 3 sprites.

Also I'd be glad to have you help with the mapping.

I am also interested, and are up for testing. Edit: I can map too if you'd like me too.

Sure you can help with mapping, though at the moment I need some help trying to come up for map designs as well as making tile sets for some maps.

Again, any help, especially spriting would be appreciated, especially now since I'm heading back to school so I wouldn't be able to work on this as often.

Would you like some Ideas for fakemon ? I have quite a few but I don't plan on making a game, so I'd be happy to share :)

As for spriting, I guess I could give it a try even tho I'm not the best, especially when it comes to trainer sprites.

Sure, I'd appreciate it.

Try using GG for 3 gen style sprites instead of paint youll be much happier with GG

I have been using GG I'm just having trouble converting a lot of the sprites I have already made to a bigger size while trying to make them more gen 3 looking.

This is deffinitely interesting, but wouldn't all this be double work for you? Writing 2 different stories.

Kinda sort of, they're not going to be completely different, they're more or less happening at the same time, just through two different points of views, it is something that would be a bit easier to manage with two games instead of trying to pile it all into one game which admittingly was the original plan.

Alright, then here are some of my ideas :

Puddlil (Puddle + Little), the Mud Puddle Pokemon

I haven't drawn/sprited it yet, but think of a circle with cylindrical arms and legs and the whole covered in mud.

Ground

Dry Skin/Water Absorb

Hidden Ability : Gooey

For the stats, there's a twist, cause the pokemon has two formes with different stats, the Mud forme and the Dry forme. The forme he starts with depends on where you catch it, but battling with it under rain makes him change to Mud forme and battling under Harsh Sun or Sandstorm changes him to Dry forme. Puddlil-Dry looks like Puddlil-Mud, except his skin is covered in cracked ground instead of mud.

Puddlil-Mud

HP : 75

ATK : 35

DEF : 40

SPATK : 65

SPDEF : 80

SPEED : 30

Puddlil-Dry

Lv. 33 Muddy Water

Lv. 37 Rain Dance

Lv. 41 Mud Cannon (Signature move of his evolutionary line, Special Ground-Type move with 110 base power, 80 accuracy, chances of lowering speed or accuracy)

Puddlil-Mud evolves into Mudolem (Mud + Golem) starting at level 30 and Puddlil-Dry evolves into Sandster (Sand + Monster) starting at level 30.

Mudolem, the Mud Giant Pokemon

For the appearance the upper body is kinda human-like and covered in mud but the lower body is completely made of mud, think Grimer-like appearance for the lower body.

Ground

Swift Swim/Water Absorb

Hidden Ability : Drizzle

Mudolem :

HP : 110

ATK : 40

DEF : 65

SPATK : 130

SPDEF : 90

Dry Skin/Sand Force

Hidden Ability : Sand Stream

Sandster :

HP : 50

ATK : 130

DEF : 90

SPATK : 40

SPDEF : 65

Lv 37 Iron Head

Lv 42 Sandstorm

Shangolin is basically a Pangolin with minor alterations, kinda like rattata is basically a purple rat :v

Normal

Sturdy/Run Away

Hidden Ability : Filter

Shangolin:

ATK : 55

DEF : 105

SPATK : 10

SPDEF : 65

Lv. 16 Bite

Lv. 19 Iron Defense

Lv. 22 Metal Claw

Lv. 25 Slash

Lv. 28 Roar

Lv. 31 Body Slam

Lv. 34 Rolling Shield (Signature move of his evolutionnary line, works like Protect but if it blocks a contact move, speed raises by 2 stages)

Shangolin evolves into Armordillo, the Steel Shell Pokemon

Armordillo is a Armadillo with a huge sheel made of steel plates but small head and leg/feet, and his tail has a wrecking ball at the end of it, like an ankylosaurus.

Normal/Steel

Sturdy/Shell Armor

Hidden Ability : Filter

Armordillo :

HP : 80

Oh my goodness these games sound so epic! I'll defidently want to play the heck out of them once you make them a thing.

As for Fakemon ideas, I have a few to offer if needed/wanted.

These are interesting though since I'm still new at programming I'm not quite sure what to do about the line signature moves. Also it's fine if you don't have very many fakemon I might not end up having that many due to a pretty big majority of the characters not using them.

Though I don't plan on adding field effects for some reason I really want to point out the smells of certain areas, like one area smells like miltank crap all the time.
