I hate 4Chan/Reddit. How about you?

Recommended Posts

As someone who frequents on tumblr, there are some very problematic people. It's the people who use their disorders or the fact they are part of a minority to undermine others. They claim to be Social Justice Warriors but honestly, things like Down with CIS is not social justice. If someone has a different opinion than them, they will swarm, attack and bully mercilessly. They do not care. Often they all stick together so it's easy to avoid them, but one wrong post can get them onto you.

From my understanding of 4chan (I did do an assignment on it), there is some good and some bad and it depends on what board you are on. 4chan has done some good, they gave birth the lolcat meme as well as the rickroll and Chocolate Rain. They also seem to be vigilantes who are against rape and animal abuse. But there is some rotten eggs which we hear about more, such as the celebrity nudes, child pornography, and other boards which have been mentioned before. But you can only stumble upon these boards if you look for them.

Overall, Tumblr and 4chan, in my opinion, are on par with eachother. I don't know about reddit because I hardly go on there.

If you can't differentiate between marginalized groups making jokes within their safe spaces (i.e Down with cis, white people = demons) and actual oppression/bullying we're gonna need to have a talk. Trust me, I've seen the type of people who have "different opinions". They're more often than not about keeping the status quo and the continued issues that these communities face.

I see your point about the different opinions. I'm not agreeing with these opinions but a line needs to be drawn when it turns into harassment and bullying. I don't know about you but telling someone to kill themselves isn't the right way to go about expressing your opinion. I've seen this happen with my own eyes, I didn't agree with the opinion but I didn't step in to argue, people pushed and pushed, telling her "Kill yourself CIS scum". She eventually did. I'm not talking about the jokes people make, its the people who take it too far, actually believe that all CIS are transphobic and bigoted.

Reddit is a very very shitty place. Literally closet racist central, fam.

That being said, there are a few subreddits that I hang around. (Notably /r/hiphopheads and /r/leagueoflegends)

I only visit r/grandorder and r/monsterhunter, pretty small communities (relatively.)

@BrutaLotus r/whatever is a subreddit, and /letters/ are boards on sites like 4chan.

I can assure you that when they state "all cis/white/males are transphobic/racist/sexist" it's not to attack that group as a whole, but to hold them accountable. If the word "some" is used, it's incredibly easy for memebers of the oppressive group to remove themselves from the equation. Furthermore, most cis people are complicit in anti-trans power structures, fam. (I got some good ass reads on it if you want, just pm me)

Typically the smaller the subreddit or at least the more focused the subreddit, the better it is. The defaults are literal fucking cesspools.

Not sure if that's how you meant it, but

such as the celebrity nudes, child pornography, and other boards which have been mentioned before. But you can only stumble upon these boards if you look for them.

Child porn is banned on all 4chan boards, and if someone posts it people /will/ sic law enforcement on their sorry ass.

4chan did in the past have lolicon and guro boards, but they've long since been removed (and /g/ remade as the technology board).

There are no boards that you can only stumble onto by "really looking for them" with the exception of /qa/ (an old Question & Answer board). Every other board is easily accessible from the board index and 4chan's front page.

Yes, this is true. Marginalized communities can get away with blanket statements and general biggotry because no one calls them out on it. If anyone does, they are denounced on the social platform as racist/sexist/___phobic by the community in question and its supporters. However, members of socially privilleged groups (whites, males, normal people) are not allowed to do so because of their social privelege. This is just and indisputable.

I don't care much for either communities nowadays, I rarely, if ever, visit them and in those cases it's because I happen to be extremely bored and I need to see something really stupid, which is rare. I used to lurk 4chan frequently, but tbh, it's utter trash. Always was, always is and forever will be because the community is unhealthy and toxic to be around. I won't even start with /b/ or /pol/, which are the worst of the bunch, but /v/ can be pretty bad too. In rare cases some posts are pretty funny, much there's a sea of disgusting, hostile crap that one would have to swim through to get a chuckle.

Only ever been to Reddit on whims or if friends have showed me stuff there. I hate the layout of reddit and it's damn near impossible for me to try and find my way around the place. Plus the only reddit community I've ever really tried to understand kinda just shit on another fan community like it and yet was more than happy to try and plagiarise content from the very same community they were shitting on to try and make their's better. So not a fan of Reddit based off of that.

4Chan though, from an outside perspective with little experience dealing with it just always sounds like a country ruled by anarchists. Having said that, if there's one - arguably - good thing to come out of 4chan, it's Anonymous. Even though they might've revolutionised online organised crime, they've certainly done some good things online as well as their morally questionable stuff.

I know nothing about 4chan, so I cant really comment on that. But I really like reddit. There is always plenty to discuss there in the subreddits that I like frequent. Your experience will vary ofcourse depending one where you go. But the same goes for everywhere. If a city has a bad neighbourhood, it doesnt mean that the whole city is crap. But I do think/worry that every internet community (even this one) runs the risk of getting a dominant insider subculture that increasingly elevates the entry barrier for new people with fresh opinions.
