Ronnec
I'm not sure if this is the right place to be in the forums but... it's the closest I could find. Anyway, I've been playing reborn for a bit now, I just got to Onyx but I'm quickly realizing how poor my team is. I have, a Lvl. 17 Gulpin Lvl. 17 Stunky Lvl. 23 Charmeleon (Didn't mean to over level him, everyone else just fainted.) Lvl. 17 Hoothoot Lvl. 16 Makuhita Lvl. 18 Swirlix I'm not sure what to do, as I loose many fights. There's really nowhere to grind and I can't find better Pokémon. Does anyone have suggestions, like places to find better Pokémon, or good places to level? Again, I'm only at Onyx... Thanks in advance! wytch_doctr
How far are you into Onyx? because if you just got there (literally just) then there are plenty of trainers that you can find before the Gym Leader for you to level your team. In all honesty, your team is pretty good for Florinia's grass types. I'd suggest training up Stunky, Hoothoot and Makuhita (a fighting type is pretty good for her star mon). Ronnec
Okay, I'll try that, and yes I did "litteraly just" get into Onyx. Would you mind sharing some tips for Onyx and other regions? Edited October 3, 2015 by Ronnec
wytch_doctr
Onyx is a grass type gym (you fight florinia). There are up to 15? trainers you can fight in the Onyx Ward, including Fern. You can get a Lillipup and a Seel/Cacnea egg. Also the Game Corner gives some good pokemon (Nido-M, Shinx and Slugma). You get the Coin Case inside the Trainer School. I won't spoil the game for you but the next Gym is a poison type, so be prepared for that.
Ronnec
Okay, thanks for your tips, I'll be suer to look out for that gym
TimTim
Gulpin and Stunky repeat type, Gulpin has stockpile which i find very useful for tanking attack and acid spray-stockpile is one of my favourite tactics in removing tanky fairy threats in the game while stunky learns flamethrower by lvling up which give you coverage for fire type, so i dont know which tactics you will be going for but either one can be dropped and reserve a spot for other mons~Anyway, many of us rotates more than 6 mons between the gyms, 6 mons just weren't enough for 18 different types~Your Makuhita can check Cradily with secondary rock type(evolve it as it's close to evolving)
Lyra
I'd suggest removing swirlix, since at this point in game you don't really have any use for a fairy moon, and for now you can't evolve it. I'd suggest you get some pokemon to take care of water and ground type opponents, since your team is weak to those two types. You have an event budew during sunny days, and IMO roselia and roserade are great moons.

Combat
I believe there should be an Espurr around the beginning area, which can be a real tank depending on it's gender, though I can't remember for the life of me where it is.
mde2001
I believe there should be an Espurr around the beginning area, which can be a real tank depending on it's gender, though I can't remember for the life of me where it is. Espurr is in a house in the peridot ward that you access by giving money to the homeless man a couple of times. I wish I could help you on grass types but I'm unsure of which ones are in the early game. Checking out the monotype viability thread might help you (if you check the grass section). Lyra
Budew isn't available anymore? That's too bad. From the event pokemons you have pumpkaboo (somewhere in beryl cemetery, you need to have soul candle). From the regular moons, there's bellsprout, sunflora and odish. Sunkern is a no go. Victreebel can be both a physical and special attacker, and they go great with sun teams. If you want something bulkier, go for vileplume. All three of them can be found in Obsidia park. Espurr is in the magma team alleyway in the lapis ward. Male version is a great supporter, female version is great for attacking. Anyways, both will be useful for you, with upcoming poison and fighting type gyms. I finished all episodes up till now, and my female meowstick is still one of my main moons. Ronnec
Okay, I grinded the casino all night! I got a shinx! I replaced my stunky with it, Now I'm going to get a Espurr (female, as I already have gulpin as a tank) And will replace it with swirlix... I also can't seem to find the monotype thread? Anyone know where it is?
Ronnec
Now I face my next issue... I'm not sure if I should get a bellsprout and replace one of my other pokemon... I'm really not sure if it neccesarry but you make it seem important to have a grass type. What do you think?
TimTim
Another early grass type which is pretty decent is Petilil which only shows up during sunny day(check weather forecast in tv at grand hall where you get your starter there), it evolves with sun stone into lililgant which is a killer if it is allowed to set up quiver dance, an NU killer machine~Bellsprout evolves into Victreebel by leaf stone, which are powerful in term of the attacks but frail and slow~However, both drawback is stone evolution occurs pretty late due to availability of evo stones~http://www.pokemonreborn.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14182 this is the thread you requested~Suggest you expand your team into more than 6 mons(with rotation aside from party), 18 types of gyms seem too much for 6 mons to handle, besides grinding level is not difficult in Reborn anyway, you can quickly level up for reserve members when you need them~ Edited October 4, 2015 by TimTim
wytch_doctr
Huh? I got Budew in E15, before Julia. You get a Rose Incense from a Doxy in Peridot, North of the PC. Roselia is great with Toxic, Toxic Spikes (great move) and Giga Drain, but you might have to give it a few makeovers at the salons in Obsidia to make it evolve earlier. Otherwise you might miss out on quite a few good moves. Sadly you can't get Roserade until further in the game but you probably still would want to level Roselia to level 50 regardless, to get a good move. Lyra
Having grass type isn't that important, but this early in the game they are best for covering ground, water and rock. Buut, you've covered water types with shinx for now, and since lots of ground types are also rock types, makuhita can keep those in check. So nah, you don't have a big need for a grass type anymore If you still want to replace some of your pokemon with bellsprout, I'd suggest to replace gulpin since bellsprout is grass/poison (however, it doesn't learn useful poison type moves, and ame isn't big on giving us tms.) Your other option would be removing hoot hoot, since it doesn't learn any flying type moves till level 33, and you are covering psychic moves with espurr. eta: can't believe I forgot petilil. She is also a killer. Edited October 4, 2015 by Lyra
TimTim
I got chastised by Odybld once for not doing research enough, so i am gonna tell you the location of first sun stone and leaf stone as well, see spoiler if you dont mind spoiling the place detail sun stone is found in Byxbysion Grotto(Wasteland) while leaf stone is found in Lapis Ward near Shelly(a gym leader suicide incident), both you will get in time when your Weepinbell or Petilil have leveled up to have powerful moves(stone evo mons usually learn powerful moves in high level, so dont rush into evolution 'cause once you evo you may never get those moves again~
Ronnec
Okay... I kept my team and made it to the Gym leader, my entire team is getting killed by her. Espurr is still only lvl. 16 and everything else is about lvl. 20, except my Charmeleon which made its way to lvl. 26, may use a common candy. There are no more trainer battles and now I'm not sure what to do. I usally get down to her last pokemon but I can never KO it.
TimTim
Yeah, that Cradily caused a lot of trouble for many people, I used my Mankey to take care of it as fast as i could, as Cradily's role was to stall with sandstorm which only hit us because of her Cradily's rock typing~I grinded my mons at the park in obsidia ward where you defeated the pulsed Tangrowth, it's longhaul but at that time i thought it was the only way, may be someone here has a better idea~Therefore your Makuhita shall be an ace here for handling Cradily~and if i am not mistaken, Makuhita has knock off in level 19, which can knock off her Cradily leftovers(i cant recall, but i think she has one of those items that heal every turn), preventing her from recovering each turn~ Edited October 4, 2015 by TimTim
Ronnec
Okay, I'll farm, and unfortunatley I passed on Knock-Off, as I mostly only say it in PvP and it jsut didn't seem to useful to me. Also, would you mind telling me where you found a Mankey?
TimTim
It's in Obsidia Slums as wild encounter, along with Pancham(pretty useful early fighting type too) and Scraggy(not accessible for now in your current progress)~LOL i cringed when you said that Knock Off wasnt useful, it was very useful in removing equiped items especially since Reborn gym leaders have items that either enhance their moveset or allow recovery, most people overlooked it because of the base power 65, but anyone that has experience with competitve play would know that it's crazily overused in competitive plays(which Reborn leaders have similar constructs)~
Lyra
Mankey can be found in obsidia slums, you have 15% chance of it appearing. Hmm. Can't remember who I used to take care of cradily. My charmander sorted the rest of her moons out. *runs off to her save file to check*
Ronnec
Wait, it seems I don't need knock off... just discovered what covet does
Luna
lolz covet steals items well technically borrow items cause you cant steal items from trainers in reborn sigh. well i used a makuhita to wreck flobot's cradily. so yeah i would get a fighting type in your team as soon as possible. mankey is just too frail, i tried using him and he is just not worth using. makuhita can at least take a few hits.
TimTim
I just wanna add that TM thief also does the same thing but better on dark type because of the STAB, and yeah Luna is right about Mankey being frail, i ditched it as soon as i got my hands on other mons that have fighting moves or alternative to type match up~Among early fighting types, Makuhita line is known for its massive HP and attack, Scraggy line is known for defense and special defense and D-Dance, and Pancham line for its Scrappy, Mankey line doesnt have anything going for it~
