So we've all seen the 'Top 10 best pokemon' or the 'Top 10 best pokemon battles' but how about a slight twist? Best battle themes that play during the games. I'll put mine in down below. Do yours gen by gen or a top ten, whichever you prefer I guess! I'm just going to do a top 10. Was gunna do a Top 7 but there's a few themes I just CAN'T not put in here.

10

Battle with Rival Silver. This theme is awesome, it's rather fast paced and fits in with how Silver's a rather dark character yet becomes brighter as the games go on. It's how a battle with a rival should be, fun, challenging and the music should be great. His battles may be only alright but his design, background, development as a character and this kickass battle theme is enough for him to be my second favourite rival period. Also he's the son of a Mafia Boss. Sweet!

9

Kanto gym leader, HGSS version. I don't know why I love this but I do and it's amazing. The fact that you could face the original gym leaders from Kanto is amazing enough, aswell as them providing a decent challenge due to quite a level jump between the elite four and them but this theme just makes it all the better. Fast paced then to slightly more relaxing before jumping right back into fast paced. An amazing remix of a remix, Remixception!

8

Battle with Champion Alder. This theme......Alder's a black sheep amongst champions in that you don't face him...untill after the credits have already rolled, making him a sort of extra boss. After a long time of hearing his already really cool encounter theme, you hear this gem. His battle's not super hard but not easy either, his Volcarona in particular however can sweep your team with little effort thanks to Quiver dance. The battle itself is meant to be fun, Alder's a retired trainer, or semi-retired meaning he isn't as powerfull as he once was and so the entire battle theme is carefree and crazy unlike the dark and epic battle themes played in the final storyline battle in Black and White. Also this man jumps of cliffs like it's nothing. +1 for Badass old guy.

7

Battle with Galactic Boss Cyrus. Now I've rambled on about how much I love Cyrus so I'll shorten it...a little. A manipulative bastard that manipulates his entire team into helping him....with the intention of killing them all anyways. His battle theme is bleak and dark while still holding the techno-thing with the space vibe team galactic's supposed to have. The dark part of his theme fits in perfectly with how you face him at Spear Pillar/The distortion world and how both his design and team centered around dark types is absolutely intimidating. Fun fact, for as old as he looks, the guy's only 27 years old.....then again, he might have been potentially abused by his parents as a child and considering all the things he does...yeah.

6

Battle with Legendary Pokemon, Ho-oh! This thing....there's a reason I picked HeartGold over SoulSilver and that's because I preferred Ho-oh's more majestic design over Lugia's more intimidating one. Then I heard this....and I was instantly in love with it. It fits so much with the whole ceremony and Ho-oh appearing in the sky aswell as the entire thing happening in Ecruteak city with the theme having more traditional japanese feel to it and urgrh it's awesome. It and Lugia's themes were also the first legendary duo to get seperate themes so...sweet!

5

Battle with Champion Lance/Pokemon Trainer Red. I...really can't do this enough justice, people have spoken and remixed this so many times...it's kinda become pokemon's iconic battle theme really. The whole thing with Lance becoming the champion(Retaking the slot?)is very well built up and the battle is very challenging. He brings 3 Dragonites and pseudo dragons and really with this music playing in the background, you feel like you can lose at any moment. The moment when you feel victory however is glorious and unlike others, Lance is a gracefull loser and admits defeat. He's kind of your mentor for a short part so...you've surpassed your mentor aswell. Then there's Red....and this theme playing on the peak of the most dangerous mountain in the Kan-Joh continent with hail and harsh winds is absolutely epic and while Red's team may not be anything special, the setting, the music and the difficulty due to how high leveled his mons are makes for the an amazing finale to the sequels of the originals.

The next 5 are coming soon....but as I said, feel free to list yours below.

All this elaboration, and yet not even a single youtube link to any of em, bro? 0/10 would not read again.

Anyways...in all seriousness, I've got probably too many favorite battle themes from pokemon to count; over the years, I've been steadily building them up... but here's a few off the top of my head- with videos, mind you...

Zinnia's Theme:

I never owned a 3ds, and I likely never will. So I have never played X&Y or AS/OR nor will I ever, but the moment I heard Zinnia's Theme, the first thing I said was "Hell fucking yes." IT...it's just got everything I love in a battle theme. A good orchestral/symphonic atmosphere, a sophisticated tone with copious amounts of violin and yet a subtle fierceness with that paced and constant drum beat... I don't care who the hell my opponent is, I could fight anyone if it was to this tune. In fact, if not for this very tune, I could say with a shadow of a doubt that the amount of damns I would have ever given about the gen six games would be none. It sounds that good to me.

Plus, I think there may damn well be more remixes and versions of this than any other fight theme from the series... hell, maybe even more than the Lance/Red battle themes have had.

Steven Stone's Theme

What can I say? Steven Stone is my all time favorite Champion, managing to be a suave and overall magnificent bastard, without being totally useless in a time of crisis. And Ruby was the first pokemon game I ever owned... it's what got little 8 year old me started in the realm of pokerman. So... when I actually managed to get to the end of the elite four for the first time ever, what am I greeted by?

This glorious, silver haired bloke with a smile that could melt polar glaciers and the hearts of even the coldest Tsundere, alongside a theme that fit him like a freaking glove. Now admitably, through a GBSPs shitty speakers, the song sounded like virtual crap; It sounded epic and grand don't get me wrong, but it just wasn't really done justice- luckily though, there have been a number of remixes in the past 10 years for it that have made up for that hardware limitation. The thing sounds amazing to be frank, that opening sequence, raw and powerful, yet followed by a smoother melody that rose and fell in intensity as if resounding with the heart beats of the trainer as the kid sat there scrambling what to do next, how to react to Steven's steel types. Fucking amazing folks, 10/10 from me. Probably my all time favorite.

Plus the guy has a freaking awesome encounter theme to go around with it, just an added bonus...

Theme of the Dark Lord, Giratina

Call me a devil's advocate, but... can you really blame me when the tunes are so good on the dark side? There's just... such a sense of power and perverted authority permeating every note- when this thing first starts playing, you know right off the bat that the thing that stands before you is not to be trifled with, and some shit is most definitely about to go down- and the darker tone of the downward spiraling beat is entirely fitting for a Being forced into exile. But there's also something else in Giratina's theme... a sense of rebellion, which really comes out in full force when listening to a decent Heavy Metal or rock remix of it, I mean, it just feels like that massive ghost dragon is just biding his time, waiting for the moment that he can finally strike back against the one who imprisoned him...

Hell, this is another theme that I could literally fight anyone with so long as it was playing the background.

I'll probably put up a few more later for now though... feast you ears on this remix of the lake spirit battle themes:

Okay, to be honest... Zinnia's Theme. The instruments are so, so, so wonderful! It's so free-spirited that it makes me feel like I'm getting ready to fight in a vast field while the wind whistles by, whipping through my hair... chills, man, chills!

Yikes, my brain chopped out the "battle" bit for a moment, apologies! What about the RSE Rival Theme, just for nostalgia's sake? That Slateport battle always got me BAD as a kid...

Well I'm not sure if I have a proper classification on a 10-1st place scale between my top 10 but ... I'll just list all my immediate favorites

My very 1st favorite for a long time was the "vs Lance/Red" theme in gsc , especially this remix of it

My next favorite was Cyrus' battle theme

vs Giratina (the remixes somewhere above that were posted are also quite awesweet )

Cynthia's pre- and during- battle theme

After that, in unova, colress' theme and the glitch city remix of it

N's theme

Ghetsis theme

Legendary bgm in b/w

Now time to move on to Kalos ... wellp, my immediate favorite there that stands out from all other likeable bgms is definitely Lysandre's theme . I think it has that quite sinister vibe to it, it'd make a great remix for reborn

Elite 4 bgm

Special mentions for some town bgms - Anistar, Snowbelle

ORAS - Wally's final battle bgm is arguably the best one ever in these games

Zinnia's bgm

This pre-battle little bgm when you face trainers in food court for example

Magma/Aqua boss bgm
vs primal legendary bgm
vs deoxys bgm
Reborn's gym leader theme (and shade's backwards one)
Meteor admin bgm
..Well reborn in general has an awesweet OST so I could go on with everything I love there but those 2 are probably my favorites^
I guess that's about it from me

Battle with Sage Ghetsis! This guy....if there was 1 villain that terrifies me as much as Cyrus, it's this maniacal bastard. The whole game, he's been there, watching you, plotting. KNOWING, that you were eventually going to stand in his and his adopted ""son's"(No idea how that works, I mean they look the fucking same....)path. The moment you finally beat N you try to feel elated, but that's all crushed into the ground when this guy walks in. The battle theme is dramatic and bleak, absolutely terrifying, it's the exact opposite of N's final battle theme which sounded much more final battle-esque. And it's not just his theme that's terrifying, looking at his team, it seems like he was preparing himself in the scenario that you would defeat N and thus has the perfect counter to the Legendary Dragons. What is this, you might ask? Unova's pseudo legendary, The Brutal Pokemon. Hydreigon. This thing is the most THREATHENING pokemon in the games period, it's not even funny. It can OHKO your Legendary with Little Effort and hit the rest of your team hard enough to either OHKO it or leave it in potion range. And all the jokes about the chants shouting Dennis in the background? It's actually either Ghetsis....or the one that make this even better; Penance. Penance is a word usually used in religious context for making one pay for their crimes....sound familiar? Absolutely amazing, his BW2 theme would be here though if the fight with him wasn't absolutely embarrasing. GG Ghetsis. Cyrus is still a better villain though.

3

Battle with Colress.

People love this theme for a reason. It's so different from the other battle themes in the pokemon games being completely techno. It's so different and yet it fit's completely with his character and his team composed of steel, psychic and electric types. It's not epic or amazing like others...but it's still a blast to listen to and the battles with this theme in it are all very enjoyable aswell as challenging. It's fucking colress ladies and gentlemen, he's got a sick encounter theme on top of that. Just listen to this swaggy as beast.;

Absolutely amazing, Colress/10 would fight again.

2

Battle with Champion;Blue Oak.

You defeat the elite four and it's Dragon Master Lance...and then the bombshell drops. The rival, the person who's been 1 STEP ahead of you, always within reach, was the champion. The moment you feel you've finally surpassed him, you realize that he's done it before you and that he's the current champion, setting up a final battle that was both quite a twist and epic considering how well built up it is. The entire game, he's been in front of you, beating gyms back to back before you got there and coming back from where you were going to go, and now? He's the final obstacle, the final opponent before you took the title of champion for yourself and the battle that followed was epic. While it may not be Ghetsis level's of hard, it's still a hard battle and his team's well rounded looking similar in composition to yours. Not specializing in a certain type like other trainers in the game, he used the Pokemon he caught in his journey. The theme itself is brilliant with it giving a true sense of this being the FINAL battle and it having some parts of his encounter theme in there. In a Fire Red nuzlocke I did earlier this year, he nearly wiped the floor with my entire team with the only one still alive, barely at that, afterwards being my Vaporeon. His Exeguttor in particular having somehow taken down half my team. While he may be a cocky son of a bitch, he truly gave the ultimate final battle to hold his new title with amazing music, crazy buildup and a great challenging battle. While I love every version of the battle theme, I think the version in Pokemon Origins did it the most justice.

Just....listen to this glorious masterpiece;

and now for some honorable mentions that would've made it on this list in several different spots actually:

Battle with Distortion World's Giratina. It was a REALLY close tie between this and the battle with Colress, Giratina after all is my favourite legendary but I went with Colress in the end. The theme's very fitting for Giratina though, with it sounding like a theme in reverse if anything and it's an absolute mess yet it's amazing at the same time. It sounds like a bunch of different things at the same time and it fits the 'devil' pokemon perfectly. You go Giratina!

Battle with Champion Steven. I love Steven, he's a swaggy and well dressed guy and you can't help but love him. He's a steel specialist yet uses more 'earthly' based pokemon in the Steel/Rock/Ground types and it fits. Steven's an archeologist and it shows. He helps you multiple times throughout your journey, giving you Devon items and the mega stone/ring for your starters. He's the prime example of a champion that's also a really great friend and damn his encounter theme is classy!

Battle with Zinnia....do I even have to say anything here? Zinnia's theme is a fan favourite for a reason and it's brilliant. The battle with her may be really easy but the theme is enough for me to want to NOT beat her really. Not only that but her backstory is kinda tragic...and I really can't believe that Aster was her daughter so I'll just go with Aster being her younger sister or something.
1

Battle with Champion Cynthia..
In my opinion, the best champion battle. While I may have said that the battle with Blue is the best final battle....this one surpasses it to be honest. No words about the music, it's just that good. The battle itself is hard, her team being centered around pokemon with high offensive stats and most of them being average defensively. The team centers around covering the weaknesses of her ace, Garchomp, the all terrain threat it is. It's absolutely brutal, equaling Ghetsis's Hydreigon. And you know what? It knows Giga Impact for absolutely NO REASON except to make you fall down even more. Dragon Rush and Earthquake are usually enough to destroy most of what you've got and seeing this monster wreck your team one by one on it's own to the beat of the music is enough to make this theme and the battle in turn my favourite of the franchise. Fun fact for y'all. Cynthia and Cyrus's name are counterparts to eachother, one meaning red and the other white.

No mention of Sycamore's theme?

Sycamore's theme is awesome but it isn't a battle theme and tbh he's an absolute pushover, well in the second battle atleast. In the first, he's mildly challenging due to having the powerfull water/fire/grass core which early game is really strong.

I'll do just my favourite cause I wanna get in on the conversation but I'm also very lazy.

Kanto Leader theme from HGSS. This is a really great theme because most of the music in pokemon I find has a great opening and then falls flat with only a few exceptions. This leader theme is one of them doing well to keep a sustained level of excitement throughout the entire battle.
