mariojr89
ok so I started earlier today...and I seem to be stuck. the first gym is slaughtering me. I cant seem to level up anymore, unless I wanna fight endless lv 5s... and I cant seem to find any pokes that would be helpful. am I missing something? Dragon116
You can grind on pokemon in the alleyways in Peridot. The first 3 gyms are really rough in terms of leveling, after that is smooth sailing since you get a repeatable trainer in the grand hall. Etesian
^^Yeah, that alley has level 9-12 Pokemon iirc. Also, fish up a Grimer or two, those things are great early game (check the pinned guides in the On The Hunt for exact locations of everything (the EV guide even has encounter percentages)). Fumble
Step 1) Get Kricketot. Step 2) Grind Kricketot in the Alleys until it has Fury Cutter and evolves. Step 3) Sweep Julia's team or at least most of it with Fury Cutter spam.
Chopster
I was playing with Froakie as starter and oh boy was it hard. Luckily got timid at first try and after using ability capsule got protean. Somehow managed to get through first gym but I still regret not grinding any fire/flying mon early-game. Reborn is unforgivable for playstyle like in first gen. You simply have to exp your whole team. God... I never suspected how spearow with sniper and adamant nature could make me so happy
spark95
It's heavily disadvantageous to not have a full party at the appropriate level. I suggest you use anything you can and try things out.
Dragon116
I found all gyms were beatable within 5 levels of the level cap, so 15 for Julia, 20 for Florina, 30 for Corey/Shelly, etc. During my hardcore run I fell in love with Sudowoodo. When you need a gimmick pokemon, that thing is great to have due to Sturdy. It's also viable as a normal team member, unlike other gimmicks like Prankster Murkrow. Nivircity
Yeah i agree, I picked a water starter as well and the game was very difficult at first.Just get as many pokemons as you can find right now and level them up. You'll beat Julia in no time. Even if you had to use these pokemons just to beat her. You can get "Espurr" when you keep giving change to the man who asks you for a change he'll move and you'll enter a room to get Espurr which can be deadly against Julia. Skullgasher
Wooo, you are in trouble if you chose a water type as your first starter. You could always get a nidoran at the game corner. Pansear should also be available somewhere under the bridge Edited November 6, 2015 by Skullgasher
Avarice
Hope you find a Pachirisu! Or a Gulpin. Or a Poochyena.
zx_rider
You could get a Grimer. It's got good defenses, good attack and you could poison them with Poison Gas.
grimjaww
Get a gulpin, at least for the beginning. It starts with sludge and makes the first two gyms a little easier.
