Jack

The Scratch connected...

...except that Meena had hit the one place that could have made the situation worse: Lara's Bandanna.

As soon as the clear rip of fabric was heard, Jack's nonchalant attitude and facial expression turned to those of dread, his face visibly turning pale and his previous smile now completely absent. He then spoke to himself, although Mio could've easily heard him.

"Uh-oh. That's not good at all."

Lara heard the fabric rip, saw Meena's joyful look, and then snarled, dodging out before unleashing a hair-raising Howl and then lunging at Meena with increased ferocity, intense anger clearly evident in her eyes at the damaging of her headwear. This time, she aimed for the neck, her teeth gaining a dark aura.

It also unfortunately just so happened that this time, if she connected, she would be a lot less gentle and would also attempt to violently shake Meena into submission, rather than just hold on.

All in all, a poor combination.

The most that Jack could do for Lara in her rage was to try to stop her verbally. Arceus knows what would happen to him if he tried to physically separate her from her target.

"Lara, NO!!!"

Lara heard her trainer's call, and a spark of realization set in, even if just for a split second before vanishing again. The moments-breadth of hesitation before her attack offset her aim slightly to the side, something that prevented the taking of a life in that fight since she was now headed for Meena's shoulder rather than the meowth's neck. What she would do if she connected remained unchanged, though the consequences would be less disastrous for either trainer due to her aiming for a less-deadly area.

After having finished speaking, Jack started to reach for a Potion, but stopped when he realized that if he healed Lara, then Mio would probably do the same for Meena, undoing all of the progress that had been made thus far on either side, and he didn't want to undo all of the hard work that either Pokemon had done.

Just after Lara had snarled, Leonidas suddenly looked a lot more scared, and scurried from next to Jack to behind the human's leg. In addition, he covered his ears, shut his eyes tight, and shook in fear of what would come next. What Lara had said when she'd snarled and how she'd acted just afterwards had scared the living daylights out of him, although neither Trainer could've known what it was that she'd said, what with both of them being humans.

((OOC: Lara has only used Howl and Bite, nothing else.))

Bianca

As the vines connected with the Chimchar, Bianca pumped her fist. "Yes! Good job Snivy! Now, use Tackle!" However, as the Snivy moved to Tackle her opponent the Chimchar set the vines on fire. "Don't release him! Just because he's a Fire-type doesn't mean he's immune to danger! Bianca shouted from her position on the field. Snivy listened well, continuing to use her Tackle attack to full effect. The Snivy cannoned herself into her opponent, pulling the Chimchar toward her to create a strong attack. As the blow separated the two and Snivy was driven back, it was clear that she'd suffered damage from hanging on with her burned vines. She looked to have taken a strong hit, but was still more than capable of fighting. "Don't give up, Snivy!" Bianca cheered on from the sidelines. "I know you can do it!"

Outside – Brendan

Brendan took his time scanning both Pokémon with his Pokédex. He wasn’t very familiar with the Treecko-line but it seemed very agile and fast, unlike his Roggenrola. This was probably the worst match-up out of all the Pokémon currently present.

“Alright, let’s see what you can do, Titan!” Brendan enthusiastically yelled. After a quick look at his partner’s moves on the Pokédex, the amateur trainer came to a decision. “Keep Gomez away from you. Use Rock Blast!”

Titan immediately responded. In front of the hexagonal, yellow part of his body formed a small rock that was quickly hurled at where Gomez was standing. This process was repeated two more times. Brendan could only watch as all three rocks formed a straight line towards the Treecko.

((OOC: I’m using a random number generator for Rock Blast.))

Outside- Jason

"Get out of the way!" Jason shouted at Gomez. The Treecko agilely leapt away from the first two, but got tagged by the third. However, the Treecko pressed onward. "Roggenrola is a Rock-type, so that means Grass moves are the way to go! Now, counter with Absorb!" Jason ordered. The Treecko shot its hand out as it leapt at the Roggenrola, flinging three narrow vines at the Roggenrola. They were covered in tiny hairlike roots that were adept at sucking the strength from their victims and were currently speeding toward Titan.

Alecks

Apollo was knocked back because of the Snivy's tackle, he ended up landing on his back but quickly jumped up. His body had obvious damage, mostly from the tackle as his own fire attacks weren't as effective against himself. Because of the damage both Apollo and Snivy took, they both seemed to be hurt but neither wanted to give the other an inch. "Keep on going Apollo, this fight isn't over yet!" Both partners were determined to come out of this battle on top, and were willing to give it their all. "All right Apollo, use Leer now!" Apollo nodded and glared right at the Snivy, in his eyes burning a hot flame that shocked the Snivy, causing her defense to be lowered. "Good, now go on the offensive and don't give them an inch of breathing room, use Ember again!" Apollo ran forward once again, jumping from side to side as he spewed out small bolts of fire from his mouth, overwhelming the Snivy with flames that shot forward from all over. There was no way she could get dodge all of them!

Mio

Mio knew something was up when Jack spoke. The way his opponent turned visibly pale said all Mio needed to know.

"Meena!" he shouted, but his cry was drowned out by Lara's bone-chilling howl.

Meena's life flashed before her eyes as the Poochyena attacked, clearly going for the throat. But instead of dodging or running, Meena stood ready to take the attack. If she was going down, she was sure as hell taking Lara down with her. She hissed and spat, trying to provoke her opponent. Mio shouted in horror as he realized her plan, but someone else was already a step ahead of him.

Even as Jack's command sent Lara off-course, Loam darted as fast as her stumpy little legs could carry her. She chomped down on Meena's tail, using her powerful muscles to spin the Meowth around like a shot-put, sending Meena flying towards Mio. Lara's attack landed right where it should have, but thanks to Loam, there wasn't a target.

Mio slid on his knees to catch Meena before she landed, the impact pushing the air out of his lungs. Luckily, it seemed Meena hadn't suffered any more damage than she'd already taken, but it was clear her wounds and her adrenaline were taking a toll.

"We're going to have a talk about this whole mess later, Meena." Mio said, taking a potion out of his bag and spraying it on Meena's wounds. Meena grumbled and went to stand up, but her trainer stopped her.

"Uh-uh. You're done." he said. "You're not going to fight until we've worked out your issues." Meena glared, but Mio met her gaze calmly, and she was forced to accept his decision.

Mio placed his Meowth gently on the ground, ignoring her grumbles of discontent. Standing, he turned to Jack.

"Uh, sorry, but it looks like I'm gonna have to switch out." he called. Loam moved in front of Lara, her gaze icy.

"You stay under control now, Loam. I don't want to have to take both of you out of fights." Mio's voice was stern, and Loam could tell he was very serious. She nodded coolly, reassuring Mio that she was listening and level-headed. Revenge was a dish best served cold, after all.

Jack

Jack nodded.

"That's okay, I'm going to have to switch out as well."

Jack then walked over to Lara, picked her up, and then took her to where he was standing before. he then set her down and then glared at her while he used a Potion on her. she seemed very ashamed of herself, like she'd lost all will to fight against this particular opponent for now. Nonetheless, Jack admonished her sternly.

"When this is over, you and I are going to have a little talk."

Jack then sat down next to Leonidas, and gave him a quick pat on the back.

"There, there, boy. The situation is finished. Now, go out there and do your best, Leonidas. Show me how well you can do while still remaining under control."

Leonidas perked up at this, heading out onto the field, eager to begin. In response, Jack gave the first command of the Battle's second half.

"Leonidas, Charge!"

At this, Leonidas stood still, yellow sparks appearing around him as he gathered electrical power, raising his resiliency against moves that were mainly energy-based.

Mio

Loam seemed disappointed when Jack carried away the object of her vengeance, but Mio felt extremely relieved. Two pokemon hell-bent on seeing the other bleed was a dangerous situation, as Meena and Lara just proved.

When Leonidas stepped forwards, Mio chewed on his lip. Shinx was an electric type, so Loam would be at a disadvantage. He wasn't sure of what its stats were, but Loam probably had the disadvantage in speed. Guerrilla wouldn't work this time around.

Jack had his Shinx set up with a charge almost immediately, which put Mio especially on edge. Loam wouldn't be able to take a charged spark, and the effectiveness of water gun was reduced, meaning Loam couldn't keep him away with ranged attacks.

Still, Loam could probably do more damage with Tackle anyways.

"Loam, use growl and keep your distance." Mio called. He wanted to wait and see what Leonidas had in store, but more than that, he wanted Jack to think he was still playing the hit-and-run game.

Jack

When Jack noticed that Mio went for a setup move rather than attacking, he knew that something was up, since he knew that Mio knew Loam was slower than Leonidas, making a hit-and-run method nearly useless. He decided to play along, however, and made no facial change as he spoke to Leonidas.

"Leonidas, Leer."

Leonidas nodded, then glared at Loam, sparks coming off of the yellow bands on his forelegs as he did so.

((OOC: I decided to have Leonidas' Ability be Intimidate, so we can take that into account in this Battle. I just wanted to let you know.))

Bianca

Bianca grinned widely as Alecks fired off his attack. "Wow, great strategy, Alecks! But you're not covering your bases!" she chimed in as the flames drew nearer to her Snivy. "Snivy, vault over the Ember attack and use Vine Whip!" The Snivy used the force of her vines leaving her neck to propel herself forward and off the ground, bringing the vines with her. She cocked them back and lashed six times, three with each whip, as she careened over the Fire-type monkey and landed behind it. The blows struck hard. Luckily, they were not very effective and the Chimchar only took half of the damage. Bianca pumped her fist. "Now that you're behind him, use Tackle!" Snivy launched herself back toward Bianca's side of the field, aiming directly for Apollo's back.

Alecks

Alecks watched as the Snivy managed to get behind Apollo, Apollo managed to take some hits but they still had the advantage. "Even if the Snivy is fast, your still more faster and agile Apollo!" he cheered, Apollo turned around to face the oncoming Snivy. "Great, hold it right there.." Alecks muttered as he saw the Snivy get closer and closer until she was very close to Apollo. "Ok now! Jump away from her and give her a face full of Ember!" Apollo acted instantly, in sync with his partner, and jumped back and away from the Snivy while letting out bolts of flames from his mouth. The bolts of flames went right at the Snivy as she was running straight towards them. Apollo landed on his feet and stared at the Snivy, both he and his trainer waiting so see if the Snivy could manage to continue.

Mio

Mio knew what was coming as Jack's mouth formed the 'L' for Leer. When Leonidas nodded, Mio whistled sharply, causing Loam to look back at him in alarm.

"Sorry," he said. "Just keep looking here until I tell you." Loam nodded and kept her gaze on her trainer.

It only took a moment for the sparks jumping from Leonidas's legs to fade, but in that moment Mio had already decided on a course of action. They couldn't keep dodging Leers forever, and Growl only did so much. Since Jack had chosen another set-up move, Mio was willing to bet the Shinx didn't have any electric attacks yet. Meaning, Loam was safe from any super-effective damage. However, Leonidas could dodge Loam with ease, so they were going to have wait for him to attack so that Loam could counter.

"Loam, water gun!"

Loam whipped around at the sound of his voice, firing a powerful bullet of water in her opponent's direction. Mio knew it wouldn't do much, considering the earlier Charge, but he'd take whatever bits of damage he could get.

Outside - Brendan

Dang it! The Treecko had a way to attack from a distance. Now their chances to actually win this battle became even smaller and Brendan had no idea what to do. He wasn’t quick enough to come up with a strategy and saw how the vines almost leached onto Titan. Luckily for the amateur trainer his Roggenrola wasn’t faced by the attack. A soft, faint blue covered the rock type, raising his defense.

Brendan was dumbfounded. He figured his partner used Harden by instinct, but he didn’t see how this would be helpful. But he had no idea either so he just watched as the vines reached Titan. One of them seemed to slightly bump of the hardened rocky skin while the other two sucked away the Roggenrola’s health. The Mantle Pokémon bowed a little, trying to make himself as small as possible, to try and withstand the attack. Brendan figured it was another natural reaction but it did gave him an idea.

“Titan, use all your weight and jump backwards! Reel in that Treecko and hit it with a tackle!” The rock type struggled since he wasn’t all that flexible but managed to stay on his feet after the soft landing. He placed himself quite firm on the ground and used all his weight again so he could slam the Treecko as hard as possible.

Bianca

"Snivy, you're not letting him go! Stop him!" the Trainer said. Snivy reacted quickly, lashing out behind the Chimchar with Vine Whip and preventing his escape. While Snivy took a heavy hit from the Ember, she also managed to land her Tackle attack through the flames. The vines bringing Chimchar back toward her once again provided a powerful, clean hit. She got up, looking charred and injured but still able to fight.

Jason

Gomez was sent flying through the air toward the Roggenrola; however, his Absorb vines were still connected, and that gave the young Trainer a bit of a crazy idea. "Gomez, use Absorb again! But this time, tangle the vines!" The Treecko still had one vine attached to each hand. As he moved forward more began to sprout, weaving themselves between the original two and attempting to latch onto the Roggenrola at the end. Finally, by the time Titan's attack had arrived, Gomez had created a cushion of damaging vines for his opponent to crash into. Gomez was knocked away from the vines. He sustained damage but managed to halve it thanks to his efforts, while the Roggenrola was now tangled n a veritable net of Absorb creepers.

Jack

Jack knew that the jig was up when he saw Loam use Water Gun.

"Leonidas, Charge again."

Leonidas did so, the second surge of electrical sparks making the watery projectile weaker than before as it impacted on the little lion. Jack then issued his next command.

"Hit it."

In response, Leonidas used Tackle, speeding in towards Loam at high velocity.

Alecks

Apollo was sent flying back once again by the strong tackle, once again landing on his back as he fell down. He jumped back up onto his feet and looked at the Snivy, slight bruises starting to appear on parts of his body where he's been tackled twice. Alecks saw how both pokemon stood there as they both tried to recover their strength, this was becoming a tough match. "Apollo, use Leer again!" he didn't want to wear Apollo down too much, so making him do an easier ability would be helpful. Apollo looked at the Snivy once again with with a determined and angry stare, causing the Snivy to lose some defense again. "All right Apollo, now just keep Snivy from hitting you! Remember that no matter how many vines she throws at you, your still faster than her!" Apollo nodded slightly as he stood on the balls of his feet, prepared to dodge any attack thrown at him.

Bianca

Bianca giggled, waving to get Alecks's attention. "Yooohoooo!" she cried in a singsong voice. "You're doing an amazing job for your first battle, Alecks!" she shouted cheerily across the field. "You and that Chimchar of yours are showing a lot of promise. Unfortunately, this is a scenario where experience is going to win the day because like it matters a lot whether or not you've had to fight for a victory before. But dooooon't worry!" she added. "I'm going to teach you your first lesson of your Pokemon journey!" Suddenly, her eyes narrowed and Bianca's serious demeanor returned. "And that's how to handle losing." She snapped her fingers, authoritatively bringing her Snivy to attention. "Snivy, Leer."

While Bianca had been speaking, a change had come over Snivy. Its cuts and bruises and burns were barely visible underneath a glowing green aura that was emanating from the snake. She gave her opponent an intimidating Leer. Apollo instinctively took an uncharacteristic step backward, unsure of what to make of this new development in his first battle. However, this hesitation was all Bianca needed.

"Snivy, Vine Whip flurry!" The Grass snake leapt forward, using its Speed to surprise the Chimchar. It began its relentless onslaught, firing Vine Whips quickly one after the next. At first, it seemed Apollo would be able to dodge them all, as he nimble moved from side to side and up and down. As the exchange wore on it became apparent that though the two were similarly matched in their quickness under normal circumstances, whatever the strange aura around Snivy seemed to have made the difference. All it took was Apollo stumbling after a dodge to give Snivy the opening she needed. She quickly grabbed the Chimchar around its ankles, binding its legs together and holding it up over the battlefield with the other vine poised to strike.

Bianca looked across the field to Alecks, smiling but still very sincere. "Alecks, you and Apollo are going to be an incredible team one day. Don't feel bad about this loss. After all, it's not every day that someone's first battle is against a Challenger," she added with a wink. "Snivy, put down that brave little Chimchar. He deserves a rest." The Snivy nodded, putting down her first enemy. She then ran onto the field, her bubbly manner returning as quickly as it had disappeared. "Ohmygod, Snivy, that was incredible! After an intense and gorgeous battle like that, you just must have a nickname!" she rambled. The Snivy nodded, her excitement for a name all her own growing.

"Hmm... How about Diantha? You're strong and beautiful, just like the Kalos Region's Champion!" The Snivy nodded, happy with this name.

"Sni!" she squealed, nuzzling her new Trainer. Bianca giggled and hugged her new Pokemon, excited to begin her new journey!

Battle Complete! Rank B! Apollo has leveled up! Apollo can learn a new move!

Diantha has leveled up! Diantha can learn a new move!

Mio

Mio swore under his breath as Leonidas set up another charge just before Loam's attack could hit him, but when the little cat came barreling towards Loam, he had to restrain himself from smiling. He'd expected Jack to dance around a bit more, try a few more Leers before coming in with Tackle, but Mio certainly wasn't complaining.

Loam looked back at him expectantly, but Mio simply shook his head. Loam felt nervous, seeing a pokemon of a type she was weak to coming straight for her, but she trusted her trainer.

Mio waited until Leonidas was almost on her to give his command.

"Tackle! Give it everything you've got!"

Loam tensed her muscular back legs, ready to push off as hard as she could, but up close, Leonidas's presence was overwhelming and she couldn't help but hesitate. It only took a moment for her to regain herself, but her attack had already been lowered, and she careened towards Leonidas with much less force than she could have had.

Alecks

Alecks ran onto the field towards his beaten partner. Apollo was laid down on his back on the grass, his poor little body covered in bruises. Alecks knelt beside his fallen buddy and put his hand down gently below Apollo's head to make it a bit more comfortable for him. "We did great for our first time Apollo, don't worry, we'll get out revenge soon enough." Apollo looked up at his trainer with disappointment but a small grin quickly appeared on his face as he gave Aleck's his attempt at a thumbs up and a wink.

"Chim..!" Apollo cried out, he wasn't one to give up easily...just like his partner.

"That's enough, time for you to take a break." Alecks mumbled, giving his new buddy a smile before taking out his pokeball. He pressed the white button in the middle and Apollo was recalled back into the ball in a bright red light. Once Apollo was safely back into the ball he pressed it against his forehead. You did great buddy, he though to himself, hoping that Apollo could somehow hear him.

With that done he stood back up and put the pokeball in a pocket in his dark grey messenger bag. Looking up at the sky he gave out a tired sigh and smiled, this was one battle neither of them were going to forget.

Outside- ??? and Alecks

"You and your Pokemon really showed a lot of promise in that battle," a voice said to Alecks. It was clearly the voice of an older man, but was full of excitement and vitality. Suddenly, he seemed to remember his manners. He smiled and closed his eyes, rubbing the back of his gray head in embarrassment. "Sorry, I just love watching new Pokemon Trainers battle. It reminds me of my younger days. I guess that makes it a bit of a guilty pleasure, right?" The man laughed at his own joke, his smile pulling at his wrinkled and weathered skin. He looked totally in his element out near the battlefields, his lab coat fluttering in the breeze. Who was this old guy? Just another Researcher? And where had he come from? How long had he been watching the battles?

"What's your name?" he asked Alecks. He then leaned in and squinted. "My eyesight isn't quite what it once was. Tell me: Are you a boy, or a girl?"

Alecks and ???

Huh? A boy or a girl?, Alecks thought to himself, suddenly feeling very self conscious about the fact he looked so much like his twin sister. They had always gotten comments about how much they resembled each other since they were twins, but he never thought that he looked so much like her that he looked like a girl! He felt a blush creep over his whole face as he struggled to answer for a second "A-a-a-a-a.....g-girl?! Look, just because my twin's a girl doesn't mean I look like a girl!!!" His voice just seemed to keep stuttering every time words came out, the sudden image of him in his' sister's outfits popping into his head. He almost felt like running into the nearest woods and not looking back, living with Apollo in nature, forever hidden in shame. Finally he shook his head and cooled himself down, he was sure Apollo was laughing his ass off in his ball if he could see his trainer now. Alecks cleared his throat before speaking again "No, I am not a g-girl! My name's Alecks and I'm my own man!" He crossed his arms and put his head down, his eyes glues to his shoes.

Jack

Jack smiled, as Mio had fallen right into his trap.

"Dodge, and then Leer when it looks at you!"

Leonidas then stopped in his tracks and sidestepped, causing Loam to speed past him. He then turned around, making sure to keep his eyes on Loam at all times, preparing to glare at the mudkip when it turned to face him.

Mio

Mio swore again as Leonidas dodged, but he was initially more concerned about Loam's sudden hesitation. The Shinx must have had Intimidate as its ability; Loam wouldn't have faltered otherwise.

Leonidas swung around to stare at Loam's back, ready for her to make eye contact so that he could get her with a Leer. Mio bit down on his lip, considering his options. They could take the Leer and go in with a tackle, but with Leonidas's speed advantage, it wouldn't do much good. He could have Loam close her eyes and attack without a clear target, but with two Charges under his belt, and Loam's subpar special attack, whatever hits they managed to get in wouldn't do much good. Which left one option.

"Loam, use Growl, then turn around and keep your eyes closed, ok? I've got your back so don't worry about what Leonidas is doing."

Loam nodded, letting loose another Growl before shutting her eyes tight and turning to face the Shinx behind her.

"Ok, now... lie down." Loam's face fins twitched at the order, but she obeyed all the same. Mio smiled, but he felt tense. He wasn't sure this plan was going to work, and that bothered him more than he could describe.

Outside – Brendan

They were in trouble now. Not only did Brendan’s plan backfire, but Titan was in an even worse spot then before. The amateur trainer scratched his head and had to admit he saw no way out of this one. But before the battle Brendan did announce they weren’t going down without a fight.

“Use Rock Blast one more time! It’s our only option left.”

This time Titan hurled four rocks at Gomez. The rock type didn’t even wait for the results as it tried to shake off those pesky vines. And Brendan knew this attack was their last resort. Titan wasn’t able to take any more damage and if this attack didn’t knock down Gomez, they had to accept defeat.

Outside- Jason

Jason knew the battle was won the moment the Rock Blast was fired from Brendan's Roggenrola; however, he still had a fight to finish, and so did Gomez. "Let's finish this! Gomez, drain him dry!" The Treecko leapt away from the first Rock Blast and the second; however, he was not anticipating the third, fourth, and fifth. He took hits from all three, dangerously depleting his health. However, a spark of defiance glimmered in the Treecko's eyes. "Get back to your vines!" Gomez sped toward the entangled Roggenrola on shaky legs, sinking his hands into the creepers. His bumps and bruises began to disappear as his wounds healed and the Roggenrola's health wound down.

Suddenly, Titan fell over. It was clear the Rock-type was no longer able to battle!

Battle Complete! Rank B! Gomez has leveled up! Gomez can learn a new move!

Titan has leveled up! Titan can learn a new move!

Before either Trainer could react, Brendan felt a tap on his shoulder. It was none other than Juniper, who'd been watching the battle between Jason and Brendan. "Hey, you should have your Roggenrola hold this!" she said quietly, offering the new Trainer a small, purple stone. "Rock-types are notoriously weak to some common starter types. And it just wouldn't be fair for me to leave you at a disadvantage against the rest of your group," she said sincerely. "Roggenrola's defenses are high, but its Speed is low. This should help Titan weather a few extra hits nicely."

Brendan has received Eviolite (x1)!

Outside- ??? and Alecks

"You're a boy, then?" the old man asked. "Well, it just gets harder and harder to tell these days. But young man, if you want others to take you seriously, I'd consider standing tall and not hanging your head like a berated schoolchild." The man chuckled and offered a hand to shake. "It's nice to meet you, Alecks. My name is Professor Oak. Juniper tells me that you older folks are a part of some hip new research program she's trying out. Let me tell you, sonny, back in my day we just went on our journeys as kids!" His expression softened and he appeared pensive. "But maybe it's just the sign of a changing world. In either case, I envy you all. Being able to go out and experience the world of Pokemon is an exciting time in your life. You'll never forget the friends and memories you create on this journey."
