A Marginally Better-Written Discussion For My Pokemon Reborn Hardcore Walkthrough

Lord Chespin

Question

So, if you didn't know (although why wouldn't you, unless you came here first), this is the discussion thread for my walkthrough of Pokemon Reborn Hardcore, which you can find here.

Did I do a good job? Do I need to go into better detail? Just let me know here!

NEXT UPDATE: Whenever I feel like it.

And yes, I'll read all your comments. I am a merciful god.

> So, you got a shiny brand new ticket to the Reborn Region. It's the only shiny thing about this region, though;

I think this is the only thing you got wrong. I mean there are shiny pokemons everywhere. :-)

Good job with the tips against Julia! You win... half a cookie for now! ;-)

Oh and you might as well recommend taking Chikorita. I mean it's supposed to be HARDCORE right? :-P

petition to change chubbs guide's name into Perfectly Written Guide for Reborn

I'm flattered that you took inspiration from my guide. I'll link your guide in mine asap.

And also, one little thing that I would like to request:

if I did every little single detail, it would be redundant thanks to DespairSyndrome's work.

As much as I would love to take credit for 'every single detail', I'm afraid I can't do that. Remember, kids, my guide is Horrendously Written. I'm pretty sure 'every single detail' is Chubb's work, since his guide is Perfectly Written.

It'd be nice if you can change that to 'Chubb and DespairSyndrome's work', otherwise, I feel that it might not do Chubb's guide justice.

and yes im still taking a little bit of credit, but dont tell anyone ; )

That said, your guide is gold. Can't wait for more of it!

but seriously, jokes for apprentice victoria and pretty boy cain, yet no jokes for swag jockey fern?! how could you11

There's also something I wanted to say here, but I forgot.

Keep up the good work. :^)

EDIT: I remembered what I wanted to say. I wanted to say 'you win the cookie', but it's too late for that now isn't it...

o:

*adds to own guide (which he hasn't updated for like a month after part 9 didn't save)*

Also, if you want teams from the beginning of the game to gym 2, I'd use St3ffo's Hardcore boss list, which hasn't been updated recently, but it has the early stuff! http://www.pokemonreborn.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19485

I'll try and see if i can update at least until Gym 4 these days, been busy with some irl problems :/

Good job for the first chapter anyway!

...I didn't want to participate but sense none of you actually fought field Corey for whatever reason:

Garbodor is generally a tank with Stockpile who sets up Toxic Spikes WHICH IS PERMANENT on the field. If that's not bad enough, I believe he either has drain punch or Giga Drain (don't remember which) along with Venoshock. Make sure you take him out fast or he will pretty much be unkillable if he manages to set up.

Haunter is usually next who is kind of a fast hitter with a couple dangerous moves like Venoshock (it might have Shadow ball but I can't remember) along with Destiny Bond to finish the foe off if they're careless.

Beedrill doesn't look too threatening but if you try to one shot it, it could use Endeavor due to its focus sash in which the poison would KO you're own Pokemon. It has a few powerful attacks, but it's not too threatening if you're careful.

Vileplume is one of Corey's dangerous mons. It has a 100% accuracy Sleep Powder along with Giga Drain and Venoshock. I can't remember its last move, but it's best to take it down fast as it can recover its HP rather quickly similar to Garbodor.

Skuntank isn't quite as deadly as Mist Corey, but it does have some nasty tricks which I can't remember off the top of my head. Night Slash and Poison Jab are something to look out for.

Crobat I believe has the same moveset as the Mist or at least has Roost on its moveset. It's not nearly as threatening as it is in the mist, but be careful as if it doesn't kill you, the poison will.

A lot of his pokemon are able to stall kind of well which is why you should be careful if he manages to set up 1 pair of toxic spikes. 2 pairs is very dangerous but most heavy hitters should be able to get past him just fine.

From Corey's Corrosive field guide: "Corey's ace, Crobat, is slightly harder than under the mist, as it can still hit poison- and steel-types. Try paralyzing it, and keep a good rock-type on the field, as it has trouble with those." - where can I get a rock-type pokemon at this point? If I'm not mistaken there isn't any cave accessible yet.

As for Shelly, how does the rain work there? Is the bug from normal Reborn where she never uses Rain Dance fixed in Hardcore? Or is rain the default weather there? Can I use a Castform with Sunny Day or something to stop it? That should also change the field to Rainbow by the way, which might be useful as well..

Onix, Bonsly, and Slugma should be available before Corey. Onix is an event, Bonsly is in Obsidia Park, and Slugma is from the Casino. Rhyhorn is also from the Mystery Egg.

It automatically rains in the beginning of the battle, from what I heard, since Commander couldn't figure out how to make her use Rain Dance. Putting up Sunny Day should be able to stop it, but I don't know for sure.

Since you probably don't want the programmer's answer, it only starts to rain right before reaching Shelly which I made a joke a trainer let his Politoed run wild in the gym. I couldn't get the AI to use Rain Dance, but that thing will be removed unless I get a lot of requests to keep it (I'll eventually make a thread sooner or later asking quite a few questions on a newer Reborn mod for E16). And yes to your other two questions. I really only did that to keep people from burning the field...because you clever people found out about pledge moves making it an easy win.

Just a warning, I think Masquerain carries Energy Ball. I can't remember its exact moves but Scald, Air Slash, and Struggle Bug I'm sure are its other three moves. I thought this through very carefully.

Don't lie. The reason this took so long was because you became a skeleton and wrote this.

Nothing gets past my perceptiveness!

And thanks to you, I now cannot help but hear Shade in Morgan Freeman's voice.

Great job.

In all seriousness, I'm pretty glad the Hardcore Shade became one of the more brutal gym leaders. I was so hyped for the Ghost type gym in regular Reborn, only for him to be a total pushover. Kudos to you, Commander.

I would just like to point out that Shade is only Brutal if you come unprepared.

In 2 of the playthorughs I did against him I completely demolished him. Once with a Houndoom and once with a speed boost Sharpedo. In both situations they took out 5 of his 6 pokemon. Having a decent dark pokemon definitely makes it easier. In my first ever paythrough of reborn he was challenging. In my latest playthrough he was also a good challenge.

TBH, the Shadow Claw thing has to do with no field effect AI otherwise it'd just spam Earthquake when Shadow Punch is a little bit stronger. The AI thinks it'll only do 90 BP when in reality it'd do 113 BP which is greater than 100...though right now it's doing like 136 BP. Even though it should totally be able to learn Shadow Claw since it's supposed to be the Grim Reaper.

I'm glad you found Shade challenging. That fight took bloody forever to revamp, but if I had a dollar for every leader people said was so easy...I'd be able to buy a video game off of it. Anyways, I'm aware about the Kiki level thing and am considering giving Shade something else like Mismagius to take care of the Dark types, but then I'd have issues with electric types again. Like Serra, Shade is a rock in a hard place because his field is so exploitable and I had to nerf Gengar's speed a little bit or it'd sweep entire teams easily. I'm not like Reborn and say Gengar is too strong and make it physical. A lot of leaders are based on their Episode 7 teams as that's when I first played.

What I think I'll do for Kiki is increase Shade's level cap by 10 and pretty much make Kiki level 45 range (with a bit of a Samson treatment) and Aya in the level 50 increasing everyone up until Radomus by 5. Since Noel's badge wouldn't increase the cap, there wouldn't be such wide gap between the player and Radomus's levels. It's either that, leave it alone, or decrease everything before Kiki by 5 levels. I'm a bit against the latter option as the charm of hardcore comes from that five levels in the early part of the game.

As commander has said he has heard a lot of times people saying some bosses are too easy and stuff. And a good explanation has always been that the team you use can make a massive difference to who is easy and who is tough. I will definitely say that every time I have played hardcore the toughest for me has always been Shelly. I don't know why but.with the Rain effect the best choice to use is Rock type but since most of shelly's team is quite quick and they usually have coverage moves it's difficult for the slow rock types to even get a chance to get a move in. I have come very close a number of times to rage quitting when getting to her

@Commander I have heard again now how M Gengar's speed was nerfed. Was it really that potent that it would speed entire teams? And if so what was the way around it back then?

I would also like to ask if SpiritBOMBtomb has ever been considered? Say in place of Golurk?

One other pretty devastating combo I have seen is Mega Kangaskhan using power up punch. That could do a number for Noel. but now I am getting way off topic..I just get really excited playing hardcore and I recently started playing Pokemon Showdown and have seen some very strange and very effective things there.

Haha, one thing I know is that designing teams is a nightmare and no matter how well you plan something there will always be a way to counter it. And I am also pretty sure that Commander could make Hardcore damn near unbeatable if he wanted to

Back @The Mighty Lord Chespin - Good guide, keep it up, I have actually found out a few things I never knew about Hardcore until now. Also love the "50 shades of Ghost"

I suppose I should cover the changes in 2.1 which are more or less just adding water types into the game. I'll just list out the ones I put in

-There's a guy (I think I made it gym guy) who sits on one of the slot machines where you can buy a Psyduck from him for 5,000 Poke

-There's now a TM shop with pretty expensive TMs which some are good an others meh (though you can buy calm mind for 30,000 and Shadow Ball for 80,000 aka old moves that have been axed). It's available after Corey if I programed it right (I do know it works)

-The Magma Gang event will reward you with either a Buizel (it knows it's best moves now), Chinchou (no egg moves), and a Horsea with Splash...I'm not kidding but all are leveled differently with Buizel being the highest and Horsea I believe is level 9. You can't Dragon Scale exploit though :P

-Corey's Qwilfish is located in Coral Ward after defeating Corey

-Corey's Nidorina is now a Nidoqueen (with the same moves it used against you aka Ice Punch power).

-There's a random Shellos in Shelly's Gym next to the leaf stone

-I believe I fixed the Scraggy Key to be available after Aya but who knows

-Corey's Haunter is also available after Radomus, but it's pretty hard to find (and is only available under certain conditions). I half assed it so don't expect anything impressive (this'll change for Episode 16).

Most of what I did was to balance out Shelly a bit more since I may keep her Perma rain and give Illumise something else like T-wave (since this works so well in her favor). I'll need to test Seadra and Gastrodon out, but I don't think they'll be game breaking imo. Serra will be getting a retest in Episode 16 as now I figured out that field better (when I designed her team, I never actually faced her in regular reborn with it).

Enough boring stuff. While I really could do this, I'll probably pass on adding Derpi (Jolteon wielder) and what should be called Arnold Swartz (Flareon user). If you guys want to just imagine him being called ZEL(DA), but I won't be doing anything. I did change the text against Cain to evolve his Dewott. Part of my brain died attempting to learn how to Cain. Solaris, on the other hand, acts more like a sore loser when you beat him (though it makes since because he wasn't fighting at full power and the Camerupt was going to go off anyways).

As for the Corey's mons quest, I probably am going to add the rest of them in for a pre Shelly sidequest, but you won't be able to win it that easily given it's going to be really, really hard, but they're are really useful mons so it'd be interesting to see what people decide to use. It'll make a ton more sense in Episode 16 when I implement it. This probably is going to be the only sidequest (the other things are just events to add in underused Water types to the shallow selection) since most of the mons are underused and the fact everyone wants to have all of Corey's mons. So yeah, by Episode 16's end, excluding Crobat, you will be able to get all 10 of Hardcore Corey's mons (since Croagunk is still a thing). That's probably the last major thing I'll add aside from a bonus boss for 16.

I'm just saying this so that in your guide you can make the appropriate changes when the time comes.

Hey, remember when I said I'd update this more frequently?

Yeah, that lasted long, didn't it.

Anyway, I only have 9 more days of school until summer vacation, so after that I promise updates will come more regularly.

In the meantime, here's a second abomination:

In regards to your final comments about Victoria and Cal, I would like to point out that if Cal had stepped in sooner, none of that would have happened. Cal is also a shitty undercover agent, since he didn't even tip us off that he had sabotaged the machine.

Glad you're still working on this~

If there's one thing I love reading, it's witty walkthroughs bashing fictional characters.

Cause fictional characters were made to be bashed.

causing it to look oddly like the legendary Terminator 2: Judgement Day scene where the Terminator gives the thumbs-up while lowering himself into molten iron

Add that to the list of 'things that I shouldn't have laughed at but did anyway'.
