Mistakes you made replaying R/B/Y

Recommended Posts

I am sure a lot of us have done it. We are so used to what the Pokemon Games have become that we sometimes forget the first game did not have all the amazing stuff. I figured this could be fun to hear what you did and said to yourself "This was *** in this game."

For instance, I kept using Ember on a Magnemite and could not figure out why it wasn't super effective. That was when I remembered "Oh wait, Steel-Type did not exist."

"Sweet Ice Beam TM! Finally! here Nidoking have Ice Beam! - and you too Blastoise... wait... where the hell is my TM? ... ... OH GOD DAMNIT!"

"Stupid Golbat! you are what now? Level 40 and still don't love me enough to evol... ... I knew I forgot something... *sigh*"

"Why is my Apollo getting hit by Earthquake? What the hell man! you have Levitate! Stop Haxing Giovanni!!! - oh right, no Abilities... GRAAAAAAA!!!!"

"Hahaha! Sabrina, I haven't forgotten that Ghost is useless against you this Generation... Here have some BITE! muahahahaha!!! ... ... where is my super effective? - oh yeah... Bite is Normal instead of Dark..."

"Ah crap how much power did Jump Kick have in Gen 1 again?"

"This damn Persian keeps critting this Golem. That's pretty OP."

"Wait I thought Dragonite got Outra-... oh right that's Gen 3."

"Why did that Ice Beam kill my Arcanine? It should have done like nothin'...oh wait Ice is neutral vs Fire this Gen."

"Why did Sludge do a shit ton of damage to my Scyther? Oh right, Poison is super effective to Bug in this Gen."

"Man my Gyarados' Surf does a shit ton of damage in this game. Oh wait, that's because Special stat counts for Special Attack as well."

I'm not replaying Red this is actually my first time playing Gen 1. I have however played Fire Red which has lead me to the following thought process during my journey through this monochrome world.

"Time to get the tea and open up the way to Saffron City"

"Uh... listen lady I really need that tea"

"Seriously where is the tea?"

"TELL ME WHERE THE TEA IS!"

"Bugger it, maybe talking to the guard will give me some clues"

"Wait did the lady give me the tea?"

"Why is the guard letting me pass the lady didn't give me tea"

"Google what's going on here?"

"I GAVE HIM THE FRESH WATER!"

"But that's for pokemon right?... right?"

"Game chooses now to make sense..."

"HEY RED. I WAS WAITING OUTSIDE THE POKEMON LEAGUE. A NERD LIKE YOU WOULD FORGET TO SHOW UP" - I would always skip the route west of Viridian City and forget the chance to battle Blue, as well as the nidoran.

-Picking bulbasaur(thanks Reborn Chat :P). While Blastoise is really the only impressive starter due to better TM use compared to the other two, the line is pretty underwhelming throughout the game and takes way too long to get good, being easily outclassed by Bellsprout who you can get early on. While toxic/leech seed is a nice combo, vine whip for like 25 levels straight up sucks and Venusaur is stuck with razor leaf as his best move the entire main game and a pretty lukewarm TM learnset. I can see why bulbasaur was the least popular starter back in the day now. Shame since I actually like him in Reborn although he's still unlikely to win MVP(I even named mine Fern but top dog he was not lol).

-Thinking karate chop was a fighting move. It wasn't for some stupid reason.

-Not picking up fly or exp share. Oddly enough I didn't need any flying pokemon over the adventure as my coverage was good enough.

-Trying to raise Vulpix from level 15. My god he is BAD. You're better off waiting until Cinnabar and catching it when it's only 3 levels from flamethrower and thus of actual use.

-Teaching Moltres fireblast and sky attack. I thought Moltres would be good against the E4...

-Forgetting Fire doesn't resist ice. This makes the first E4 fight the hardest IMO out of the whole endgame, even Blue is easier(he's not that hard actually). Jynx one shotted Moltres in its big debut battle because of this, and thus became the biggest flopper in my entire run.

-Not using some of my TMs. Gen 1 encourages you to use TMs or else they will eat up all your pack space.

But honestly,mt Moon aside, this is probably the easiest main game in the series. The AI's builds are so bad that 10-12 level differences hardly matter.

I will tell you what I DON'T regret though: spending like 20 minutes looking for a Clefairy. She was so worth it.

1. That's what the Item-PC is for :P

2. Nope... Kalos is still easier... when you use the totally overpowerd Exp.Share, which you get REALLY EARLY - you are constantly overleveled for you current Gym and Elite 4, making it WAY to easy to beat them. (the only time I had/wanted to train my Pokemon in Kalos was before the first Gym)

at the end, during my first (and only) Playthrough I had a 10-15 level advantage over Diantha aka the champ!

while on the other hand I had to constantly grind levels in original Red/Blue to even match the Level of the current Gym, let alone the Elite 4...

- Ok, I give you that the AI is bad... but hey... it's the first one after all...

- also the limited Inventory, and absence of hold items (like Amulet coin) makes Gen1 significantly harder, because you can't just buy 99 of every item just to 'have them should you need it'

and abscence of Amulett coin makes Money grinding (for Coin->TM trades) tedious

You can't grind for money before the E4. Granted, there are more than enough trainers, but should you fail, you can't buy enough.

Good thing is that some pokemon evolved without the need for stones, but others... well the Linkstone is still not a thing.

Poor mistakes were to challenge Sabrina with a Haunter, use Pikachu against Brock, do that Spearow trade, use a Hypno, throw rocks at Chansey and teaching Toxic to Venusaur without having Leech Seed (so it can stack on each other).

During my first playthrough of R/B/Y (15 years ago) I taught Mewtwo Cut, simply because it was tedious to go all the way back, switch PC boxes, take that one useless pokemon that CAN learn it, and come back. Laugh all you want.

I suppose using exp share in Kalos does make it easier but FTR I didn't use it in Blue and compared to not using it in Kalos, yeah it's definitely easier. Really post Surge the game eases up a lot more, the only more difficult thing is item management and dungeon design mainly due to RPG design quirks of that era.You still have trainers regularly using level 27-29 pokemon by the 7th badge, something that stops when you reach Clemont in X/Y. Thing is while RBY has big level gaps in the E4 later gym leaders, their movesets and AI are generally too poor to take advantage of it. Even the one hit KO moves are found on typically slow pokemon and thus will rarely hit you if ever.
