Welcome to the Smash tournament thread! Here you'll find information regarding our Smash Bros tournaments that we host every now and again. Expect this to be updated regularly!

EDIT 8/19 @ 4:44 AM ET: The tournament has been pushed back a week. Still same time. In addition it is now WII U ONLY.

It's time for the next tournament! Well, announcing it anyways.

I originally promised an all new format called the World Warrior Challenge. However, due to some difficulties, that format is no longer possible. Instead, we'll have it at a later date. But enough about what happens in the future. Let's instead turn our attention to the past.

Over eight years has passed since the release of the Smash Bros. series' third installment, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. While remaining without question the best game in the series from a casual standpoint, there's very little question about the...questionability of the competitive metagame. Hitstun cancelling, chaingrabs, infinites, and the resulting 90-10 matchups, all when combined with some very questionable stages, really made the game not stand out to the Melee-accustomed competitive masses.

Fast forward eight years later. We're pushing two years since the 3DS release of Super Smash Bros. 4. A lot of things have been changed since those dark days of Brawl. Longer combos are reinstated, chaingrabs are gone, as are the infinites that plagued the game (well, if you wanna be stingy about it, Mewtwo and Lucina have infinites, but we don't talk about them.) With rebalances across the board both before and after Smash 4's release and a much more stable competitive meta, let's revisit the time of Brawl and live the good ol' days of complete jank.

The Eight Years' Brawl

A Smash 4 Wii U Tournament

Saturday, August 27 @ 6 PM ET

Yep. As you could probably guess, only characters and stages that appeared in Brawl will be legal.

Rules
The rules are pretty much the standard except they have been geared a little bit to closer resemble competitive Brawl. The more intricate rules, however, are consistent with the past couple of tournaments that we've held.

Reborn Power Rankings will be updated post-event, so here's a shot to get in on it!

General Stuff

  • 3 Stock, 8 Minutes
  • Double Elimination Bracket
  • All sets including Grand Finals are best 2-out-of-3
  • All items, custom moves and equipment are banned

Stage Selection

  • For the first game in a set, the lower seed will strike two of the three starter stages. From there, the higher seed chooses the stage of play from the remaining two.
  • For each game after the first, the winner of the previous game will strike one stage between the starter and counterpick stages. The loser will then pick the stage of play from the remaining six.
  • Dave's Stupid Rule is in effect - You may not pick a stage that you have previously won on in the same set without your opponent's consent.

Stage Availability

Wii U Starter Stages:

  • Battlefield
  • Final Destination
  • Smashville

Wii U Counterpick Stages:

  • Lylat Cruise
  • Castle Siege
  • Halberd
  • Port Town Aero Dive

Special Victory Conditions

  • If the time limit is reached in a match, or if both players are KO'd in such a way that Sudden Death is forced, the winner is determined by whoever had the highest stock count when the match ended or reached time; failing that method, the lowest accumulated percentage between the two players will break the tie. If that fails, a 1-stock, 3-minute tiebreaker will be played. Sudden Death is not to be played out and counted towards set scores under any circumstances.
  • If Bowser uses Flying Slam as a means of sacrificial KO, and in doing so forces Sudden Death, he will be declared the loser. This rule is in place for the sake of consistency.
  • In all other cases, the winner of a game is whoever is determined by the results screen to have won the match.
  • A judge is not required to be present in each match, as this will inevitably cause lag issues. However, judges will be on hand to take replays in the event of any dispute over the winner of a match or set.

Alternately, just post in this thread after this post and I'll get you in.

Spirit of Evo - July 17 - Wii U only

EDIT 7/17 @ 12:44 PM ET: The 3DS Tournament has been cancelled due to a lack of participants. Tonight's event will be Wii U only.

The biggest Smash Bros tournament ever is set to take place in Las Vegas in less than two weeks. EVO 2016's Smash 4 tournament has over 2300 participants. This huge event is the basis of our next Smash tournament.

The Spirit of EVO

Smash Bros Wii U Tournament

Sunday, July 17th @ 6 PM ET

EVO was never picky about character choice, so for this tournament, go right ahead and pick anyone you want.

Rules
Y'know, the rules are pretty useful to read up on and follow. While the rules mostly follow the tourney rules that Godot crafted, there are amendments that bring the rules closer to EVO. So, please do read up and read carefully.

General Stuff

  • 2 Stock, 6 Minutes
  • Double Elimination Bracket
  • All sets except Grand Finals are best-of-3; Grand Finals is best-of-5 instead
  • All items, custom moves and equipment are banned
  • All Mii characters are banned
  • If EVO is still running when the tournament begins, players will get extra time to watch the matches (if okay'd by all parties)

Stage Selection

  • For the first game in a set, the higher seed selects one of the five starter stages to strike, rendering it unable to be picked for that game only. The lower seed will then strike two more of the starter stages.

Starter Stages:

  • Battlefield
  • Final Destination
  • Smashville
  • Town & City
  • Lylat Cruise

Counterpick Stages:

  • Dream Land 64
  • Duck Hunt

Special Victory Conditions

  • If the time limit is reached in a match, or if both players are KO'd in such a way that Sudden Death is forced, the winner is determined by whoever had the highest stock count when the match ended or reached time; failing that method, the lowest accumulated percentage between the two players ill break the tie.

Alternatively, just post in this thread and I'll get you in.
NOTE: I'm probably going to make this the OP for all future Smash tournaments and change it up as necessary. Since Smash tourneys are going to be happening more often (so I hope), we'll just edit the OP for each upcoming tournament.

Hey, a shoutout. But yeah, I play Melee as well. I posted a few short clips in the main thread a while back. Netplay's really the only option we would have for Melee though, with the lack of an online feature, and I don't know of many others around here who play. So unless that changes, Sm4sh tournies will be all we have around here.

I'll sign up for the Wii U tournament, but since I'll be late for about 15~30 minutes (kinda hard to tolerate), I'm fine with being sent to the losers' bracket for the first round.

You can still post below to sign up, or you can do it yourself if you have a Challonge account.

As per last time, we'll be organizing the tournament on Showdown's Games channel. See y'all there

EDIT: Tonight's 3DS event has been cancelled due a lack of participants. Tonight is just Wii U only.
