What change would you most like to make to Reborn looking back on it? (Outside of making yourself relevant at all in the story)

• Corey and Kiki wouldn't be gyms. The reasons you fight them would have to be different. I really underestimated how frustrated people would get at those two.

• I really liked Higurashi, so I almost certainly will get into Umineko at some point. But I will probably just watch the anime. I initially started reading the VN of Higurashi, but found the anime to be better.
• Spell of the Unown, by far. I want my pretty crystal world. <3
• Some days just a few minutes. Some days a few hours.
• The short answer is, nothing of consequence.
  • A longer answer:
    -When I first got it I started with a throwaway test project to learn.

    -After that, my friend (same one who got me into Pokemon) got me into Fire Emblem so I decided I really wanted to make a tRPG. I heard about a tRPG Maker that released in Japan, so I was super excited. At the time, RPG Maker didnt have an official western release, it was just a bootleg translation, but I figured someone would also eventually translate the tRPG editor. Spoilers, they never did.

    -Fortunately I didn't wait around for it. I started a temporary project to keep myself busy until the tRPGE was translated. I worked on that "temporary" project for about 3-4 years, because lol what is reliable localization. I released I think 4-5 demo versions, and it probably totalled somewhere around 15-20 hours of play time in the end. For 4 years that isn't much but at one point I completely scrapped and redid everything. The project itself was an overly ambitious story about a boy sucked into a different world by a computer glitch under the premise that Earth and everything else was just a computer simulation by a colony known as God. It featured an ABS and dueling system, and by the end of its lifetime was not awful for something I started when I was 12. But I learned a lot working on that.

    - I eventually dropped the project after convincing myself that I was wasting time on RPG Maker. I thought there was no way I'd actually be able to do anything in my life with game design, so there was no point spending so much time on it.

    - In the few years after that I started a number of other projects on a whim, each time crawling back to RM like it was some kind of addiction. My friend got on my case about that a lot. I don't remember a lot of those projects, but there is the one I alluded to about my dreams before. One was an action-puzzle game where the goal was to restore color to a greyed-out dystopia. Another, around the time I was 17, was the tRPG concept that would go on to be refined into Starlight Divide.

    - I started Starlight on 2k3 as I mentioned before, and hammered out the characters, system, and started making the battle system. Animation limits inspired me to take it to XP, and fog/tile limits inspired me to move from that to VX (or VXA, I forget). Then I caught wind of someone actually working on a tactical battle system script for a relevant version, and decided I would wait for that script to be completed before I charged ahead with Starlight. It has since been completed, but I probably will not use it after all.

    - During that 5 year period I frequented and moderated a lot of RM communities, and also commonly both participated in and judged various mapping contests, and 48-hour or one-month game contests.

    - After that, I more or less finally kicked the habit of RPG Maker... until I started Reborn. Addictions die hard. But some don't need to be killed in the first place.

    basically ive wanted to do starlight since i was 12 lol rip.

- Will Starlight Divide be something you do in you spare time like Reborn, or are you planning to make it your full time job after you're finished with Reborn?

- Is there an overarching message you want to convey through Reborn?

- Which character do you have the most fun writing? And on that matter, which character do you think is the hardest to write in Reborn?

- And finally, when will we see more of Anna in the games? I kinda miss her and her comments...

• I will make Starlight regardless, so if it turns out to be something I could support myself from I would love that. That would probably involve Patreon or whatever though, so we'll see when we get there. I don't want to work my day job (actually a night job.. but still) forever, but I also don't wish to hold unrealistic expectations.

Here's a warning: do NOT watch the Umineko Anime, its not a particularly good and faithful adaptation, and even worse, its unsolvable (it lacks crucial details to actually solve the mystery...). And most kinda agree on the anime being mediocre.

Instead if you want to know the story and don't have the time to read the 1,2 million word long Visual Novel you should read the manga, which is actually written by ryukishi07 himself, and is a surprisingly great adaptation and can even stand on its own.

Oh and here's more question, because you asked for them so nicely...

-You've made a point to subvert many gender expectations (and playing some straight) with the many characters you write (eg. Cain, Adrian, ZEL, Titania). Are you doing this for any specific reason, and are you drawing from real life experiences when writing these characters?

• Awh, that's too bad. Jan had said he enjoyed Umineko's anime. Well, we'll see.
• The characters and their demeanors are just based on how they were in the league. So there's not really any agenda there.
  • There's a couple specific characters who I have spun to some more real life experiences, but I'll refrain from commenting on that for the time being.
• Nothing major. Maybe certain things based on feedback, like, deactivating the 7th Sanctum stealth section after clearing it once, or having Blake take the ring in that branch rather than taking Shelly hostage and making player giving it to him, since a lot of people were really frustrated by those. In either case, it's not major changes, just slight improvements.
  • I think the topics that would cause the most backlash are probably the ones that need to be dealt with the most. So that's a reason not to shy away from them. That said, again, events in the game are mostly just based on the league. So whatever happened happened and that's what makes it into the game.
  • Honestly, this whole analysis about messages and intents behind certain themes and characters is probably not going to be very relevant to Reborn tbh, because of its origin. However, if that sort of thing is your gig, I would encourage you to hang on for Starlight, because that one is actually designed with care and intent... and around some themes people would rather not talk about.
• Against organized religion... not really. In fact, my grandfather was a reverend, my mom works at a Methodist church, and I also sometimes help out there. If anything, I might say I'm against taking religion to its extreme, or any point where it's hurting people more than helping them.
• It wasn't explicitly based on Christianity. I'm not sure if it was explicitly based on anything. I'm not even sure I came up with it, I think that might've been Ice. Can't remember.
• I think I officially started considering myself wiccan in the latter part of high school.
  • As for how... It was like, I was reconsidering my beliefs a bit before that, and had settled into some ideas that I wasn't aware were attached to any belief system. A bit after that I found out about wicca and was surprised to learn that it was really very close to the things I had decided on for myself. So I became fascinated with and adopted it.
  • I also very greatly respect the wiccan rede, which is basically the entire ethical doctrine of it:
    • If it harm none, do what ye will.

• Hardly ever. Keep in mind, from about the time I was twelve until last fall, I did not feel anger at all. Turns out that wasn't great for my health, but it probably was a good thing for managing stuff here. Even so, I'm still very patient. The only things I can think of that I've gotten frustrated with since then have been code doing not even close to what it needs to, one specific DDoS, and certain people refusing to respect the clearly illustrated boundaries of others, especially when the others in question are my friends.
• As far as weapon of choice, poison. It's easy to make at home and can greatly obscure the time of death if used properly. It can also be painful or quick depending on the victim's, uh, needs.
  • But no, I wouldn't hurt anyone unless it was to save someone else. Part of the reason I can so freely joke about it is because I am a pacifist, and it's so far-removed as something that would ever actually happen in this world. And in my ideal world-- I've said before, I think, that I'm an anarchist. But anarchy is for lovers, not those who step on or hurt others for their own benefit. That's why it's relegated to just an ideal. Whether it's lawless or reality, I have no wish to hurt anyone.
• I don't drink soda generally, but when I did I don't remember liking cherry coke that much.

• I'm just going to count the regions themselves not-cross generation because it's not fair, I think, when earlier generations were mostly limited by technology. Soundfonts didn't really diversify until the GBA era. Also, honestly a lot of this order is decided by the fact that I can hardly remember any music from any of these places, so it's mostly just a matter of where are the few songs I did enjoy enough to bother recalling.

• I really like Ametrine City's (Snowbelle remix) music.
• I have probably enjoyed a lot of her remixes for stuff that isn't Pokemon, but it wouldn't make sense to use those. There's also some I would have liked to use except there were vocal interjections in them that would have been out of place and that I couldn't cleanly cut out.

• I am actually looking to do just that (not the rival theme though, i think that one's fine), but her recent battle remixes haven't really called out to me for that purpose yet. Or at least not since I last checked. So we'll see.

Well a few months ago I wanted to improve my early-game Reborn experience to continue a run I had. At the same time, I wanted to pick tracks that fit better, sounded better and, most importantly, weren't used in Reju! The last one keep Reborn distinct and unique. So I went ahead and replaced...

-the city's wild pokemon theme with the Johto Trainer Battle Remix (because I felt this is the closest to pokemon in-game music for that kind of thing, repeated battles, and also I love Johto's music)

-the city's trainers theme with the Pokémon Prism Gym Leader Remix (because the next one for trainers is the Emerald Frontier Brains theme, which reminds me of fencing, so I picked a theme that reminded me of swordfights too, more piratic however)

-and the rivals' theme with the Hoenn Gym Leader Remix (because it's amicable enough but has some tension for that Fern guy, it's nice and warm without getting too hot for the occasion, also a really rich theme)

I picked older themes, I think the mesh better with the rest of the soundtrack at that point. Honourable mentions for the rival theme were the Johto Rival Battle Remix (love it, but didn't fit, thanks to our rivals being too tame to make me feel the EFF YOU that Silver did), the Sinnoh Gym Leader Battle Remix (too thought ful for them, not as light-hearted a theme as these three deserved)

I also considered replacing the minor bosses theme but decided against it. I could have tried stuff... but it's really nice too and it also plays in overworld scenes.

• Despite not liking the type, there's several Pokemon in the type that I do still like. Top is probably either Marowak or Gliscor.

• if a budew replaced monokuma then I might actually come back to the side of hope.

• Nothing comes to mind. It might have been nice to get the bloody speed boost blaziken out because man that thing ran through so many teams and like once it gets going against grass or steel there's just next to nothing that can be done about it
  • Greninja and Aegislash in 6th gen seemed similar, but I wasn't able to work as closely with the leaders at that time so I don't want to say there wasn't much we could do. It's very possible we just didn't find or play the proper solutions.
  • Despite these Pokemon, I wouldn't actually have changed it, in the interest of keeping the playing field level and sticking to a consistent rule set. However it was definitely frustrating at times.
• Probably Mimmikyu. But let me talk about this, because everyone seems to love this Pokemon, and I really just... don't. I like it best out of the current group but something about it bothers me. The prospect of a ghost/fairy type sounds fantastic to me because i really like both those types and the contrast they provide. What I dislike is the fact that this Pokemon which is so cute by wanting to be loved and trying to be Pikachu is a very specific personal trait and choice that somehow... applies to the entire species??? if it was just a single pokemon of any kind that was doing that then, sure... but why is that something that's genetically coded????
  • but i mean it's still my favorite of this small bunch, just that's not saying much.

• Bibs is fine. But a stupid Pokemon. So two days tops.
• that is a lot of crystals. I'd have to sell most of them naturally. They won't do me any good all locked away, and I don't mind sharing. Also, it would be almost meaningless if I had them all. I don't really actively seek out or buy amethyst most of the time. I just make sure to keep the ones that call out or come to me.
• the only thing that exists at first sight is lust. that said, as you allude to, i usually don't even get that far without knowing someone first.
• French onion soup. I'd rather be alone. And that last part depends on what's going on and how effectively it does its thing. But I'll try to survive as long as I can appreciate doing so. I would try to find and help any other survivors get back on their feet together. And then, when I run out of medicine, I'll take my own life.

• I made it on impulse. I keep making it because I enjoy doing so.

• In the past I've played guitar, bass, violin and cello, though I haven't kept up on them. For a while I was also the drummer for a band in high school. I also still play the keyboard and sing occasionally. Oh, and I got a launchpad recently that I'm really interested in learning to use but I've had other priorities.
• I work as a youth counselor for juvenile males transitioning back into the community. My goal is to finish Reborn and get Starlight underway so that I can focus on games full time.

• Mostly I just look up words whenever I see an unfamiliar one. Also I follow a couple vocabulary blogs on tumblr. They're really good for finding rare words randomly, learning about them, and then forgetting about them for the literal rest of your life.
• Timeboxing. Just a small personal agreement with myself that whatever I don't want to do I'll just do it for ten minutes. Usually it happens that I'll get into it and do it for a lot longer than that.
  • Otherwise I just make myself do it. Even if I don't want to do something, I can still make the choice to do so. In that case it's usually like, what is the next specific action I have to take right now? No looking ahead. No checking the time. Just one step after another.
• Although it's turned out to be somewhat harmful, it was thinking something like, even if I want to, there's no point in trying to talk to or make friends with anyone else like this. But if I keep working hard, maybe one day I can be worth something, or worth enough that someone might want me around.
