Cindy

"Are you scared? There is nothing to be afraid of. The unknown is always a factor; as is fear. You'll never know what's going to happen or what that monster about to claw you is truly capable of. You can only adapt. Always adapt."

Cindy couldn't think of any answer, she wanted to say she just didn't want to fight, just help. She stood awkwardly, dress flowing a little in the breeze. Was it really outlined in the course? She couldn't really complain. They wanted volunteers but it was somewhat implicit to Cindy that they were going to fight regardless. She had to listen to her elders however much she didn't want to. Conflicted emotions ran through her, making her heart flutter far too fast. When in doubt, follow the lead of others.

"Fine," Cindy started awkwardly, half addressing Tempus and half talking to herself. "I-I'll take part in the next fight, if I have to,"

Nothing lethal and no serious injuries huh? Rame didn't know why the answer surprised her, it was just supposed to be a sparring match after all...this wasn't home. These were just strangers, not the three older sisters she had to constantly fight tooth and nail as if they were all animals. Regardless, she glanced at the instrument slung across her back, then thought twice about the idea and placed it where she stood next to her bag. Using the thing for this would be overkill, and even besides, the was a decent chance it might get damaged. She probably should've put Fecnial with it, but in all honesty, it seemed some of the other volunteers had every intent of using their weapons.... she figured she'd be fine if she kept the blade sheathed.

She said nothing as she strode onto the designated area, instead getting into a ready stance like she had so many times before this mess, fingers flexing, mind whirring as she steeled herself. Already, a few strung together words bloomed in the forefront of her mind, just waiting for the moment to be given voice and woven into a chant.

And like that, she waited for the others to stop taking their sweet ass time so it could all begin. Gazing at Haruki opposite of her in the meanwhile, her crimson eyes seemed to almost pierce right through the annoying voiced brat, though her expression remained largely neutral.

Valor's ever-present smile shifted slightly, bleeding into a genuine smile as the girl next to him spoke up and volunteered. She seemed to have found her resolve. Cindy, she had called herself. He tried to make a conscious effort to remember the name, but as usual, it was difficult to register this specific group of vital signs and emotions to a name. Given enough time and proximity, he might eventually be able to internalise the connection, but for now, it was a futile exercise.

At any rate, she was unlikely to break down again, so his role as a gentleman was complete. He shifted his cane back to his right hand and gently touched it to the ground, but still did not make a move to do or say anything which might constitute volunteering. If the time came, he would engage in combat, but until it became strictly necessary, he would not actively seek out battle. To do so would be brutish, perhaps bordering on barbaric, and such was not the way of the gentleman.

Baixue

“I see. And to that we have all gathered here to hone our abilities and fight as one – birds of a feather flock together, as they say.”

People were in danger, wherever that place was – and Baixue, in her own idiosyncratic way, much like the seventeen others now with her, was special. She had a gift, and gifts needed to be shared. The many tales of the Aqui had guided her, and bestowed Baixue her pair of wings to be used for the right purposes.

She wondered if she had made the right decision then to avoid volunteering then; an ardent and inquisitive girl as she was, she couldn’t help but linger in the hesitation she initially had when Tempus had asked for volunteers, and the relief that followed once the required total of six had been chosen. She attempted to cram some sort of reasoning into her head to justify it; perhaps some mountains were simply too hazardous to climb at her current state, or the simple fact that her gentle, tranquil days in the tundra, contrasting with the others hailing from the same lands – the peace and love of her tribe things that of sentiments she considered a luxury – had conditioned her to avoid dispute and strife unless the situation demanded it. She enjoyed a challenge -- a challenge that promised learning and that of others could learn from -- and training as it was and with reassurance for safety, and for whatever reason she had stopped and decided against it then, she wasn't fond starting her first flight with a battle.

It mattered not in the end; late it was for her to have second thoughts on the matter, and an eagle observed its prey before it swooped to predate it. She would have to make do and would be content with observation, the current circumstances adding to her neutral stance an excitement in her heart of what these individuals were to show her.

Hassar

"This clearing only? Figures." Hassar thought with a grimace. He preferred to use stealth when taking care of targets without his Lumen. Poisons were good for that. Being out in the open like this would be a bit...problematic. He never had the luxury of training to use anything but his knives and daggers. Without poisons he'd be at a disadvantage this close, based on that alone.

Moving a little ways away from the brush, he checked the Aconite extract he had used on the knives hours before. The whitish gold liquid still ran to the tips of the blades before tapering off. "Good. Enough to flow for an hour or two...Still sharp enough to draw blood too. Now the question is...is it worth revealing that asset now...?" he wondered. He had expected different circumstances when the fight was announced, and it would probably be called off if someone collapsed from paralysis. With a sigh, he removed the sheaths and put them back in his satchel, replacing them with the regular knives again. The other daggers on his person were enough to catch someone off guard, at least.

When it appeared six of them were ready to begin, he gently leaned back against the nearest tree to watch the show. It would be good to see what these humans were capable of at least.

Tessa

Okay, when were the surprises going to stop? Really. Now that she'd finally succumbed to the intructor's taunts and decided she was gonna volunteer, then some new person just suddenly pops up to ruin her newly assembled schedule and throw her back into the silent confuzzlement that had encapsulated her since this situation suddenly went out of hand!!! Now she had to reassemble a new schedule, again...

Tessa sighed in response. It took all of her strenght to make the decision to volunteer against her will. This whole strenght backlashed on her now and she felt a bit lightheaded. All the shock this lawlessness exposed her frailty to had already started to take a toll. Oh how she longed for the moment they would be introduced to their dorms so she could set herself as the top figure in it and plan out perfect days for everyone. Then she'd excell at everything they ended up practicing here so the instructors would have no choice but to make her a general from the start and then she would be able to make others fight for her and not fight. Ah. This was so her new plan for the following days in this 'school'.

With the call to stand ready for the mock battle, Aria got her staff-mace at the ready. While it was primarily a weapon for use in enacting blunt force, it had other possibly uses if she decided to get creative. Still, she did have to watch what she did with this. After all, it would be bad if she accidentally aimed at someone’s head and gave them a concussion or worse.

Well, I’m pretty confident in my own control.

As she walked to her position in the clearing, she gave a few quick practice swings of her staff with her right hand and switched to her left hand before doing another set of practice swings. With the swings done, she stared at the other volunteers in position. Letting her staff hang with the head down with her right hand, she placed her left hand on her hip, tapped the toes of her boots to the ground, and gave her usual prideful smile.

Can was bemused at the going ons in the group since leaving the plane i was kind of nice not be singled out. He kind of enjoyed watching everyone react to the announcement of the mock battle though he wished that he actually volunteered to fight the first match. "Well at lest i will get a chance ti see what the other people can do before they see me." He mumble to himself as he sat down to watch the fight still a bit tired from the flight.

When called to be ready for the sparring match, Jev got his batons at the ready and walked over to a relatively empty edge of the designated area, ready to make his move when the instructors said that they could start. His batons were in opposite hands, so that the arm that they were synced up to was holding the other baton.

Damon

Damon was surprised when someone recoiled, almost as in disgust away from his question. 'Looks like someone isn't too fond of sarcasm...' He thought to himself, not that he had any intention of participating in the first mock fight. 'Longsword is probably a bit too lethal for this. Probably going to have to do this the old fashion way.' He thought, as he unstrapped his sword and leaned it up against a tree, then mimicked his sword by leaning against the same tree.

As soon as the volunteers were told to position themselves for the sparring match, Leo quickly formed his gauntlets and disguised some metal pieces as knuckledusters. Since the other contestants were being secretive about their abilities - except for the annoying prismatic kid, who revealed his Lumen in record time - he took the opportunity to make himself look more like a physical fighter. Sure, he would lose the element of surprise on the first few seconds of the fight, but so would everybody else.

After throwing a few practice punches, mainly to psych himself up, he walked over to the designated area and stared at the others as if analyzing them. None of them looked weak - even the prismatic brat, who looked like he was just playing dumb - and, to have volunteered for the first match, they were all very confident in their abilities. Leo had no reason to worry, though: He was just as self-assured as any of them.

Rafael took a few moments to walk where he was supposed to stand, thinking on what to do in the upcoming match. It wouldn't do to go in recklessly and get himself taken out right away. He'd bide his time, after all, good things come to those who wait. He spun the blades in his hand, as he looked around him. "Well then, whenever y'all ready, I guess." Rafael asked glancing at the other 5 participants of their little spar. There'd be no turning back after this, well, there wasn't any in the first place.

Tempus

Nodding once, Tempus took one last look at the battlefield. Everyone seemed to be in position. Raising his sword up to the sky, where it shined brilliantly, his voice boomed throughout the clearing. "Let the battle begin!" He swiped his sword down, stopping it a second before hitting the ground, and then clicked his fingers behind his back. Time itself changed around him, and while everyone else was moving half as fast, Tempus moved just a little bit faster than normal - not noticeable whilst walking, at least. But to those who knew nothing about Tempus' Lumen, it would probably appear as if he had just teleported from the middle of the field to the side of it, next to the spectators - which he winked at. Then, turning around and keeping his sword in his hand, he began to watch the fight unfold.

Leo quickly raised his right arm, pointing his open palm at the man right in front of him. The metal pins disguised as knuckledusters suddenly started floating around him as an electric pulse traveled through his gauntlet and condensed into a pulsating, white sphere of energy. Leo changed his posture in order to brace himself against the recoil, then fired the energy shot at his target's feet in an attempt to quickly incapacitate him.

As the battle started, Aria saw the boy diagonal to her starting to aim in front of himself. Rather than trying to cross that line to go after the two beyond or intervene in that and possibly get caught in a hairy situation, Aria elected to go after the only adjacent opponent who was free. So, she walked straight down that ten meters in front of her slowly. She did not rush to him.

She simply walked at a pace that could almost be called leisurely. She held the her free hand in front of her, with her palm facing Haruki as she walked. Haruki was too far away for her Lumen to produce any substantial effects on him.

In the end, the best option was to simply play some mind games, to let her slow pace wear away at her opponent’s psyche.

As the fight initiated, Jev saw an electrical pulse fired off from the person diagonal to him, and head towards one of the people next to him. He also saw one of the people beyond the firing line start walking towards the other person that was beyond the firing line.

Deciding to play it safe, Jev made his entire body mimic steel, providing him with enhanced resilience against physical hits. Since his total volume hadn't changed, he still had the same density as before he'd shapeshifted. However, as a side effect, he was now able to be manipulated like any other magnetic metal, and Rafael was standing a mere 15 or so meters away from him. Additionally, even though his eyes were now made of steel like the rest of his body, he could still see, because they were still there.

Rame allowed herself only a few moments of surveying the others before deciding her target. It seemed for the moment that everyone was intent on having a severe case of tunnel vision for those directly in front of them, not like that was an actual issue though...quite the contrary. It would keep things fro getting too messy right off the bat, and if she could take down the threat closest to her the fastest, it would certainly work to her favor.

With that in mind, she began chanting a few lines, though Jev was much too far away to have made out any of her actual words as embers began to surround her form only to blossom into a swirling blaze that dimmed itself considerably as she lowered the incantation's tempo; there was no point using full force, a few mild burns should've been more than enough. With a single thought, a few of the flames leapt through the air, consolidating themselves into the form of a small, crimson orb not much unlike a bullet before the construct sent itself speeding off for one of the boy's knee caps, streaking sparking embers as it flew...

Haruki . . . looked entirely unfazed. He pulled out a couple round pieces of glass from his pocket and held them up toward the sky, squinting at them. "Huh, they look fine, good thing they didn't get scratched or anything on the trip. Oh, yeah, we're supposed to be fighting right now, right? I probably should have checked those first. . . Anyway, why's she walking toward me all slow and stuff? That's not really gonna do much." He didn't change his position much as he spoke, but there was a slight change if one was paying attention - a little bit of distortion on one of the lenses, enough to... shine a light at Aria's eyes.

Rafael looked towards the approaching sphere of energy that was dipping down slowly, probably attempting to stop him from moving before following up. To dodge it, he simply jumped to the left before moving a bit further into that direction. "Well, whoever said good things come to those who wait must've been a very lucky person..." Rafael muttered as he looked at the person directly to his left only to notice that he felt the same distinct feeling he felt when near any other magnetic object, as well as the fact that there was a decently sized sphere made of flames hurtling towards his soon to be target. "Wouldn't exactly be fair if I double-teamed him even if this is a free for all...but I think I'll kill two birds with one stone." Rafael said before stretching his arm out and focusing on Jev, before lifting him and moving him out of the way of the fire ball and with a lot of effort sending him flying towards Rame before releasing his control over the boy. "Not doing that again any time soon...." The black haired teen said as he breathed out heavily and took a few steps back.

Jev was just about to start running towards his target when he was bodily lifted up and hurled towards it by the person next to him, who was apparently a metallokinetic. Caught completely off-guard, he cried out in surprise, and curled up into a ball, accidentally imparting some spin on himself as he did so.

"GAAAH!!"

If he missed his target, there was a good chance that he might very well crash into the spectators.

"Really?" She gritted her teeth and stopped her chanting as the boy came hurtling for her, fires dying down. So apparently it wouldn't be so simple a plan afterall...fine. Acting on pure instinct, she did the only sensible thing: dove to the side as far as she could, going into a roll and coming back up on her feet as Jev barreled right past her. She didn't spend much time to look back and see where he landed; it wasn't her problem, and there was the apparently telekinetic interloper to deal with.

From her cloak emerged the multi-toned whistle, the simple beat of a few quick notes sounding in rapid succession as flames again bloomed and dimmed on her command and condensed into yet two more miniature spheres of radiant heat, their paths snaking about each other, pulsating their brightness in near mesmerizing sequence as they sped towards Rafael...

"Damn. At least that's one of them out of the way for now...." Rafael sighed as he looked at the approaching flaming spheres. After what he just did, he wouldn't be able to run out of the way completely, especially since there were two of them coming at decent speeds. Accepting that he was not going to come out of this one unscathed, Rafael ran towards the right of one though it burnt a part of his brown jacket and cause a slight burn on his left arm. "Tsk. Note to self, do not piss her off..or anyone here, though the threat of being burned alive is definitely higher on my priority list at the moment." He muttered before looking at Rame as his right hand clenched around his left for a few seconds before throwing the knife in his hand towards the white haired girl. It wasn't as fast as it could've been if he hadn't gotten burned on his left arm though.

The electric pulse exploded as it hit the ground, scattering a cloud of dust in all directions. Using the opportunity to survey the area, Leo quickly realized that his intended target was a metallokinetic just like him. Not only that, but the two other people on the left side of the arena were a pyrokinetic and a shapeshifter. Seeing that all three of them were distracted, he turned his attention to the other fighters, the prismatic boy - whose Lumen would be incredibly annoying to deal with if left unchecked - and a girl who was apparently confident enough in her abilities to waste her time walking slowly in the middle of the battlefield. Opening both his palms, he charged an electric pulse through his gauntlets and shot two smaller, but faster energy blasts in their direction, this time aiming at their chests instead of at their feet.

She didn't flinch at the thrown knife. Quite the contrary, all Rame did was press her own assault, advancing what had been a mere series of simple notes before into a short tune on the flute, condensing yet another gout of flame into a construct. This time rather than orbs, it took the shape of a raven in flight that cawed with the rough roar of combustion and took off towards the blade, colliding head on with a burst of flame that sent the now warped and ruined weapon deviating far off course...

Only for another raven to be formed not long after, though this one considerably more tame in intensity compared to it's kamikaze brother as it set it's sights directly on Rafael, talons outstretched and beak opened wide as it swooped down towards him....acting just like hen defending her nest.

Think that throwing oafs at me is funny, do you? We'll see about that... Thinking of which, it probably wasn't a good idea to drag this on too long, not with her back to Baton boy. She still hadn't so much as glanced behind her to check, nor did she really have the time to at the moment; losing focus now would only create a window of opportunity against herself. But still, she figured getting tossed around a bit wouldn't be enough to keep him down, at least not for very long...

After walking forward for maybe half a minute, an odd sensation came from Aria’s eyes. There was an annoying glare of light boring into the corner of her vision. It was nothing disorienting, but she still could not help but question the source of it. It clearly was not the direct sunlight that was causing the glare, as then it would have happened earlier. She could only surmise that it may be someone’s Lumen in effect. Perhaps one of the other combatants was doing something with light and she was catching the glare. She squinted once and decided to forgo trying to make her opponent unsettled with an overt display of pride as she started to make more quick steps.

However, that change of heart was enough to allow her to evade a direct blow to the chest. Albeit only barely enough. Rather than hitting her chest, the flying energy ball grazed her left arm, causing her her arm to fall in a moment of pain. Aria would normally revel in her luck with great pride.

However…

Seeing as her target had not moved, that meant that attack came from the side and based on the trajectory of the attack, it was the one with the gauntlet. Her smile faded away, leaving behind a straight face.

Without a second thought, the girl sprinted towards the third party in question, ready to start her gravity at the moment she was within range.
