Veterans Azeria Posted October 9, 2016 Veterans Share Posted October 9, 2016 Exactly as the title states. What pieces of mythology and lore behind the Legendary Pokemon are your personal favourite. Personally, I tend to prefer the story behind the Legendary Beasts and Ho-oh in Johto though Giratina's backstory is a very close contender.. Crystal was my first Pokemon game so it has a bit of a nostalgia factor to it, Ecruteak itself is my favourite town in the series after all, but I always liked how mysterious they are, there's barely anything you see of them aside from the initial encounter at the base of the Burned Tower outside of wild encounters you have with them. Entei the fierce, Suicune the graceful and Raikou....Honestly, I feel like Raikou kinda gets shafted. They show how fierce and dominant Entei is through it's depictions while Suicune is portrayed as graceful and wise. Meanwhile Raikou is essentially a blank slate. Interesting thing is how their types line up with what actually occurred. Raikou represents the lightning that struck the tower, Entei represents the fire that engulfed it and Suicune represents the rain that put out the fire. While what they were before the tower burnt down will most likely remain vague for eternity, their legend lives on. And then comes what is essentially the equivalent to the devil in Pokemon. Giratina. A Pokemon that once helped shape the universe, one that governs over anti-matter and was later banished for it's violence. It is now said to gaze into our world from another realm; one where neither time flows nor does space expand. It's said to appear in ancient cemeteries. One can notice straight away that there's a certain number pattern going on between it's 2 forms. 6 wing spikes, 6 ribs, 6 legs in the altered form and 6 wings, 6 leg-spikes, 6 ribs in the Origin form. While it's never been confirmed, Giratina is pretty clearly implied to be the 'Devil' Pokemon, even it's species name indicates this even further as it's appropriately titled as the 'Renegade' Pokemon. What's even more interesting is that it's creator and trio master, is the equivalent to god in the Pokemon universe. The distortion world is a very dark, dreary and maddening place. It's intriguing how despite the fact that it's never actually stated that Giratina is the 'Devil' Pokemon, the symbolism and lore behind it all indicate towards that being true. There's simply no way this wasn't an intentional design choice. Perhaps they'll touch upon that if they ever remake the 4th generation games. Ironbound
I think I can guess what led to this, at least in part. We were discussing the concept of lore behind certain legends only yesterday. You might be in for a change of preferences, Az I like Sinnoh lore simply because it's the grandest scale of legends we've seen yet. Move over regional deities or mutant fetuses, the Lords of Matter and Antimatter far eclipse the powers of any other titular legends, and by extension their lore is also the deepest and most extraordinary. The tied-in lore of Shannon and Floaroma Town, Darkrai and Cresselia and even of Regiggigas is also deeply impressive.
mde2001
The Legendary Beasts are my favourite by far. Its a lot lower key than the Sinnoh stuff, but I really enjoy it. It fits Johto so well, because I've always felt like it was the lowest key of all the regions, and the story of a revival of nature really fits into it. Also I love the beasts themselves so that helps.
Okami
Pearl was my first actual Pokemon game (I had borrowed my brother's copy of Pokemon Pinball for Gameboy Advance a few times but that doesn't really feel like counting) and, while I was young, its lore impressed me. I couldn't get over the fact that those cute fairies could drain your emotions, will, or memory with a simple gesture. Then there came Palkia and its sibling, Dialga. In the beginning the whole "they control most of the universe" concept went over my head but after my brother told me how to get Giratina and I read its entry I got really intrigued. It was also around that time that I was introduced to Arceus who was depicted as the creator of everything, even Mew. Then I got Platinum and got even more into Giratina's lore and even got to visit its home world. Both games really impressed me. I started the Pokemon series with legendaries that controlled time and space itself, the god of Pokemon, and the devil. It's always stuck with me, these stories by far are my favorite, and will continue to stick with me for years to come. I didn't know about Cresselia or Darkrai at the time so they don't have much on my nostalgia but now that I think about it they were pretty big in terms of our species as humans. Dreams played big roles in the past and still are really mysterious, why not have two gods embody them? Shaymin was the same with me not getting one though they don't really have an interesting lore to me. Super cute though.
Lucky98
My favorite lore is from Sinnoh. More specifically, the one involving the creation of the pokemon world. I guess I like this one because it seems like the beginning point. It sets up everything else that follows. Diamond was also my first main series game
Lilleen
I don't know if it counts, but I prefer the legendaries that were created by man (Mewtwo, Megearna, Genesect, etc). Why? I like the general idea of scientists (and whatnot) trying to create a powerful being under their control, but then the whole being turns back at them. I like the whole "be careful with science" message. Sometimes, we humans are way too curious for our own good.. BUT in case that doesn't count (since it's not really a lore, heh), then I'll pick the lore of Zekrom and Reshiram. It's an interesting lore and tells a really deep and meaningful story about both the legendaries and the humans.
Froiky
I must agree that Sinoh has the most interesting set, even if there are too many legendaries. Giratina is our only ghost dragon and ruler of the Distortion World, a mirror of ours that is twisted. In addition there is Darkrai, who lives in the shadows and causes nightmares. And Regigigas, the ultimate golem from ancient times that helped shape the regions.
Yeshwa
I'm not really sure if it counts but I was always interested in the swords of justice legendaries and how they fought humans to protect Pokemon.
