Dragon Age Discussion Thread

Hey there. Any other Dragon Age fans around here as well?

I noticed, that there wasn't a Dragon Age thread on this forum so far, so I thought it would be best if I started one.

I love the Dragon Age franchise and would like to hear what you guys think about it.

Except for Dragon Age II. We shall bury it in the desert along with the game "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and never speak of it again.

I think part of why there wasn't already a DA thread is because each story is personal to you in a larger scale than most other RPGs or games in general. There's less common points cuz we all made like 50 different decisions.

Regardless, I adore the series for the narrative of teh games. The lore was always kinda cool but it went over my head a lot.

It did instil an instinct to never trust demons within m for any other game, which is good really.

Well, I doubt I made 50 decisions that were different from everyone elses, because I played so many times through Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age Inquisition that I actually made every decision possible because I wanted to see how everything would turn out if I did so. I even did that multiple times in multiple varieties and combinations of choices to truly find every hidden small detail. Guess I am a bit obsessed with it. :D

Though its unfortunate that we will have to wait so long for Dragon Age 4, as the Trespasser DLC ended with such a huge cliffhanger and I have now already seen and done everything possible. <_<

I really liked the first Dragon Age game due to its gameplay. Both DA:2 and Inquisition disappointed me greatly for being padded out and having kinda boring stories. While I am fond of the series it really doesn't hold a candle to the gameplay and stories of many major JRPG series like Final Fantasy and the Tales series.

Oh dragon age love those series. Origins was the best, followed by Inquisition and finally ending with 2. I played a lot of the games multiple times in different ways Dragon age 2 was kinda sloppy with the same layout dungeons almost everywhere and strage aesthethics but they did introduce some good stuff like the skill tree, skill upgrade and negative relation benefits. The story was a bit better then Origin, with the Hawke familly. Origin was fantastic but rather unbalanced (arcane warrior super OP). The Ai system was fantastic which I later got a mod for which made it even better. The story was rather straightforward but was excuted quite well. The choices in origin have clear effects and did matter a lot. Inquisition did a lot of things right by upgrading the world design and aesthetics. The wartable was a fantastic idea to make the inquisitor a true commander unlike awakening. The story was good (I laughed my ass off when I fought the wardens) but it felt that at the end they had to sell some dlc and attached flumsely some story at the end of the game. Allies are super dumb though.

So how do you feel about the entire templar mage thing? It was a bit less prevalent in origins but still quite important and became the center of the story in 2 and continued in 3. Personally I despise the templar organisation, they ban blood magic but do it themselves, make their templar lyrium addicts while preaching how mages should be able resist temptation otherwhise they're killed or worse forceably made tranquil . They rob people of their freedom and ruin families, they then test the mages with tests some templars would have failed as well given some examples. For what? Mages are dangerous? Loghain was a warrior but he did an equal amount of destruction. I find them the biggest hypocrits of the game.

Also my favorite character is oghren, crude but loyal and funny. My favorite fade creature is the spirit of command. That was the most interesting fade creature I have ever seen and shows a very different perspective about the fade.

This thread appears just when I start a new game. It will be my 6th playthrough of Origins I think x)

Dragon Age 2 wasn't that bad. Clearly not as good as Origins, but judged independently it's a rather good game. The main problem is that maps are cloned, the only difference between many places are just that one door is opened and another closed.

The evolution between Origins and 2 then between 2 and Inquisition reminds me the evolution of the Mass Effect saga (my favorite games, even better than Dragon Age). The first Mass Effect is kind of a introduction, centered on learning to know the galaxy, the different species, exploring. Learning to know the enemy too. Big scale, saving the galaxy, but still just a beginning. As for the crew, they are nobody, still unexperienced. Then Mass Effect 2, much more centered on the crew. Most of the missions are recruiting or helping your crew, and the main plot is of lower scale. Not fighting the Reapers but their minions, not to save the galaxy but a few human colonies, not with the support of the government of half the galaxy but with a secret organisation. Then Mass Effect 3. The war, versus incredibly powerful enemies. No more exploring, no more chatting with your friends. Just saving the galaxy. As the the crew, they are now the elite of their species. The young archeologist is now the shadow broker, the young quarian in pilgrimage is now admiral, etc.

It's the same for Dragon Age. In Origins your explore the universe and your party is still unexperienced (the young bard on the run, the witch that never left her swamps, the novice gray warden). Big scale too, but nothing compared to what happens in Inquisition. Then Dragon Age 2, more centered around a family and their friends, with a much lower scale (but still with big consequences in the end), and learning to know the future enemy (Corypheus). Then Inquisition, with the first darkspawn (not sure about the english name) even stronger than the archdemon, trying not just to destroy a country but to become a god. Now your party from Origins grew up. Leliana now acepts she's a bard and leads an army of spies, Morrigan is the counselor of a queen and possibly a loving mother (quite funny that one), Alistair may be king. Pretty similar to the evolution of Mass Effect, and many say Mass Effect 2 was the best. Well, Dragon Age 2 is clearly not the best, but it's still a good game.

And with what we see in the DLC trespasser,

it seems even Inquisition was just a beginning for something bigger. Fen Harel may be a problem if he pursues his goal of getting rid of the Fade (here again not sure of the name), but him waking up can also mean the other elven "gods" will be back. And they won't be as nice as Solas. By the way, now I'm pretty sure the golden city is in fact the immaterial part of Arlathan separated from the reality when Solas created the fade. This plus the qunari invasion predicting a war far worse than the mages-templars one, things are going to be fun.

I can let Tales slide because that is action based but Final Fantasy is too different to really compare. It's turn based, not action.

Also, a point in DAs favour is that the stories are connected and your previous decisions have an actual impact on the face of the world. You can't say as much for most JRPGs when most "decisions" are fairly hollow and binary.

Glad to see, that Im not the only one who thinks that Origins is still the best. Up to date, its still my favorite game of all time, because its filled with tons of atmosphere and story on which you can actually take a strong influence. My favorite was the Orzammar quest line. It just made you feel as if you were actually in a kingdom under the earth, heated and enlightened by glowing lava, with its own society, history and culture. I was hoping we would get to go back to that place in future games to discover more of the dwarves history while influencing their politics, but no such luck so far.

And the music of this game was incredible. Just listen to this: https://youtu.be/CdKwLkEGjhg

However, I hated Dragon Age II. In my opinion the story of Dragon Age II was just the worst of all Dragon Age games. It lacks depth and Hawke is a boring character, along with most of his companions except for Varric and maybe Anders. Characters in this game generally sucked. Not just the protagonists, but the antagonists and NPCs as well. And I also didn't like the engine they used to create that game. The maps were boring and dull and failed to give me any feeling of the same atmosphere that I loved so much in Origins. Shame on Dragon Age II. My first thought when I played it was: "For heavens sake EA! What have you done you monsters?! You murdered Dragon Age!" Thats all I have to say about Dragon Age II. It should be treated the same way as the citizens of Reborn treated the waste in Bysbixion: Build up a wall and lock it away forever, so no one may ever stumble again upon this mess.

Dragon Age Inquisition came pretty close to Origins in terms of interesting characters, maps, and story. However, it still lacks much of the atmosphere that Dragon Age Origins had, as it feels more like the foundation of something bigger instead of being an epos of its own. There are just a bit too many cliffhangers and unanswered questions for my taste, and too many essential puzzle pieces of the background story were taken out and sold separately as DLCs. I don't like it when games do that. However when it comes to influencing the story by your decisions, I think that Inquisition equals Origins.

I meant more as in the stories told by the Final Fantasy series, rather than the gameplay. CRPG's and JRPG's have widely different gameplay and cannot be compared in that sense.
