"Besides, I don't want to drag you guys into guild business well as least as possible seeing as how we just had a fight with one of 'em. But I doubt we'll run into anymore. Plus, I don't think our current job has anything to do with them. I'd be surprised if it did."

GgMDpZE.png

She had idly listened to the spy until she could listen no more. Still ignoring every word the Anima whispered to her, she spoke up from behind them all

"Oh but we will run into them again... that much is probably guaranteed. According to our prisoners, your little murderous friend here was trying to get off this rock and head to Kabumu like us; we would've still crossed paths with him and gotten involved in this mess regardless of if you'd been present or not. This same fight would've still played out, these same corpses would still be littering the ground, and nothing would've changed except the scenery and the time. That's why he was stealing food and weapons, and nothing else- he needed provisions to last his men the trip, and arms to do whatever they were plotting- still are plotting apparently -once they joined the ones who are apparently already over there. The boat schedules are more or less the same story, he needed to keep the prying eyes and new arrivals to a minimum while he went about getting prepared, that way it would be alot easier to escape. You may have broken ties with this guild of yours, fine, but clearly they've been busy while you were gone. Far too busy."

"This is the first I've heard of this. The guild leader would never order us to gather this much weaponry, even for a major heist. And why are they headed where we're going?" He crossed his arms pondering why in the hell would the guild be needing this many weapons in Kabumu. Guild rule number 15# 'Avoid killing as much as possible'. What exactly happened when he left for them to do this? Wait, he couldn't have could he? In this short amount of time? Things maybe worse than he first expected. He turned to the rest of the crew.  "You three, was there any place where Scion kept his private things? A drawer, a bag, hell even a giant chest if he was that idiotic. I need to see if what I suspect maybe true."

The trio looked at each other for a moment and collectively shook their heads. "Sorry, but we don't know where he would have kept something like that. Not even our captain would have known. Scion only wanted us to move stuff to the boat and deal with its crew. Nothing more, nothing less. All I can tell you is that I heard him mentioning some Rico fella or whatever. You two heard anything?" The mercenary asks the other two. The archer shakes his head, but the pirate does speak up.

"It's not quite the info you wanted, but there was one time I was passing by that Scion fella when I overheard him talking to one of the other thieves. He said something about Rico needing them for some operation elsewhere and something about some guy in Z'ark. The way the guy spoke, that Rico fella sounds like the head honcho for whatever guild Scion's in. Can't say for sure though," The pirate states, saying all he knows about the thieves.

"No, already! Goddess why!" Belros slams his fist against a nearby tree in anger. He was too slow to stop him. He turned to the group anger deep within his eyes.  "Okay, change of plans, you want to know about the guild? Fine. The guild I once knew is dead so why keep the secrets of the deceased. I just hope I can save the remnants of it before it's too late. So ask away, I'm an open book."

Darius was surprised at this sudden change of heart, but was not going to waste it.

"Well, for starters, who is this "Rico" person?"

"In short, Rico was the reason I left the guild." Belros spoke bluntly "We called him, Rico "The Viper", as slithery as a snake as well as as lethal as a viper. He had been with the guild before I joined. They say he was the most ruthless in the guild and the was strogest next to the guild master. Recently, however, I found out something interesting about him. Apparently he had been conspiring with some outside group to take out the guild. Currenty, I don't know who or whaat this group is but he was going to betray us. So when I found out I left, or more like it wasn't safe there. Aparently by take out the guild he wanted to take control of it. Of course I tried to tell the guild master but without proof it was little more then conjecture to him. So I left, joined the royal and while here I'd search out information about that group but it seems that they were closer to their goal then I first thought."

"OK, that just sounds kinda weird, haha!" Cass laughs in response to the nomad's odd choice of words. And also at his attempted humour. "I doubt I'd be able to pull something on you anyways now that you'd be expecting it."

He turned to all the mess happening around the place...it was that deadly woman burning down innocent trees and threatening the people they just decided they'd turn over to the authorities. OK, then...he decided to listen in on the discussion being held. 'Twas interesting.

"Huh... you're right actually." It was pretty odd how they just seemingly didn't notice. Maybe they just didn't care. Or they trusted her judgement in people. That'd.... be weird reason though. Rayne didn't think she was with this group long enough for them to be familiar with her quirks quite like that. Her people skills were good, but she rarely demonstrated them around the rest of the guards. She really just let them do the talking, let them handle it while minding her own business. She wasn't really sure what to make of this.

"I'm not really sure what's the case there. I guess they trust my judgement? Or maybe they were just happy to have another hand to fight those ne'erdowells. Either way I'm sure you proved yourself more than capable so there's probably got going to be issues bringing you along." she said, Clarisse would've sworn she heard her say something underneath her breathe, probably just loud enough to make out. though I wish I could keep you to myself.  Rayne put her index finger to her chin and leaned forward. "As for the important guy, you probably mean Madante, we should probably make sure he knows you're with us to stay at the least. Since he knew you were helping us for this battle but, you're with me for good now~ Well us I suppose. He's the leader of this unit after all."

"We should make sure that he knows, I think. He's your commander and I guess by extension mine, and it would be good if the others knew they had another axe on their side."

"Right! Let's go do it now then! Best to get it out of the way as soon as possible." Rayne grabbed Clarisse by the hand and dragged her along behind her while bolted in Madante's direction. She was much stronger looking then her tiny form would suggest, probably catching most off-guard if they were caught in this situation. She stopped to pat Beau on his head, he snorted happily in response.and then she continued.

"MADANTE!!!" she shouted to get his attention. "Hihi~.This is my new bodyguard. She helped me earlier since I kinda got lost in town. She was rather helpful so I decided to bring her along with us. She also helped a lot with the thieves! However... she'll need pay if she's to continue with our outfit. You could just pay her yourself or raise my pay a bit and I'll handle it myself. Up to you." she said excitedly. She didn't really give Madante an option to say no. Rayne more or less decided on her own that Clarisse was coming with them. She wasn't going to let anyone, not even Madante, tell her no.

"O-oh?" Madante said, surprised at Rayne's sudden arrival and the friend she brought with her. "Ah yes, I remember you helping us out in battle...and flattening a knight. As for pay..." Madante trails off, looking at the new additions the group had acquired. "Well I needed to adjust the payroll anyways, adding another person won't change too much. I'll just have to let...him know about it in advanced," Madante sighs before continuing his thoughts.

"Still though, there's the matter of us getting to Kabumu still. And if what I've just heard from Belros and the pirates is accurate, there may be a lot going on there. Unfortunately, the boat to Kabumu from here won't come around for a little over a month, time we just don't have. What to do, what to do?" Madante frowns, trying to think of a solution. Having been silent up to now, the boat captain steps forward.

"Umm, excuse me, but if you need transport, I may be able to aid you to some extent. While it's true that Kabumu is not my end destination, I am going to Z'Ark after I pick up goods from Romani. See, I'm one of the merchants from Z'ark, and I came here to pick up some goods. Of course, as you saw, I ended up getting caught up in this mess. Technically, cargo ships aren't allowed to carry passengers, but they are allowed to have guards on board to protect their ship. I wasn't granted permission to do so before since my trip was seen as low risk, but given this incident, I feel like its safe to say that I can get away with hiring some protection. It may not be the most direct route, but compared to waiting here for a month, I can assure you that you will get to your destination faster. Does this sound fine to you?" the captain asks Madante.

Madante_New.png

"Considering our alternatives, I'd say that this will work out just fine. Besides getting us closer to where we need to go, it will be convenient for getting all of us around. Apparently a few new people came around and helped out in the fighting. With that, I'll gladly take their assistance if they decide to continue traveling with us. And uhh, miss? What about you?" Madante then asks Helena, not quite sure as to her plans.

Jasmine.png

"Me? I suppose I'll stick around with you for a while. The boat to my destination won't come for any reasonable period of time, and coming with you at least lets me continue some of my research," Helena answers, glancing at Darius.

Madante_New.png

"Very well then. I'll get these three over to the local authorities while you pick up the goods you needed, and then we can head out later. Is that fine?" Madante asks the boat captain.

"That sounds acceptable. Oh, and call me Xavier," he replies, smiling a bit.

As Madante takes the three pirates over to the local authorities, the rest of the party help Xavier move some of his goods onto the ship. Once both groups have finished up with their work, Xavier pays the group for their service before leaving Gateon Port.

Party acquires 3000 vespers (each)!

Chapter 3: Local Whispers

Year 1638, 25th of Vembra

After a few days of sailing on the seas, the party safely arrives in Romani, encountering neither pirates nor storms on their travels. The party arrives at the docks of Hylva, the primary seaport of Romani, sometime in the early morning. Even in the early morning, the town has quite a few people out and about, enough to resemble other towns in the middle of the day. The area has a bit of a country feel to it, with the rustic style of the buildings. As the party debarks for a moment, Xavier explains what he needs to do.

“Alright, I’m going to be picking up some goods from one of the larger families from here. The Romani family is the oldest family name that exists on this island, thus the name. They also happen to produce some of the finer drinks in all of Veritas, which is why I stopped by here. It should take a few hours before I get the supply, so until then you all can hang out in the town. When I get back with the goods, we’ll be off to Z’Ark, which is about a day’s sailing away from here. Have fun!” Xavier says as he walks off into the town.

Looking about, there are quite a few stalls and buildings, some of them weapon shops, others taverns, and others still for just miscellaneous items.

Belros jumped off the boat and onto the dock. After that one incident not too long ago he'd prefer to be on as little boats as possible.   "Finally, solid ground. Take as much take as you want prepping for Z'ark, I'm not too fond of boat rides so I don't mind waiting a bit!" He spoke cheerfully stretching out his legs. Honestly he was not looking forward to going to Z'ark but what could he do? He turned to the group and spoke,   "Alright, I'm gonna go ahead and shop with this new cash. Anyone may join if they wish." Though after admitting he was with the enemy for a while he didn't expect anyone to follow. He wouldn't trust nor follow himself if he were in the others shoes. With that he went to what seemed like an armory. He's mainly looking for a bow, but he'll take a look at the swords and daggers too.

"Let's see if there's anything worth the cost. If I'm stuck fighting with these pieces of sharpened metal like a barbarian, Might as well upgrade..." Cadence muttered, passing within Earshot of the Anima Mage who'd scolded her at their first encounter days ago as she exited the boat after Belros, heading towards the presumable armory as well. This outcome hadn't exactly been what she'd hoped for, but it was certainly better than... spending another month in the middle of podunk, nowhere. At least this way they'd end up getting closer much quicker, even if they would have to make their own way once they set off again and got to Z'ark.

Still though, after the mess on Irvetos and the... treachery of her own spirits with how they'd set her up to look like a fool, her mood was far from pleasant, just as it had been the past few days. Infact, during most of the trip over, she'd done her best to just stay alone, ignoring even the Anima as she'd cycled through her thoughts. Why she'd once thought the guard was a good idea, she didn't know now, the nature of the book and her father's request considered. Delirium perhaps? The Crone had broken out some powerful stuff to save her, who knows what type of short term side effects whatever concoction she'd wiped up had had? Or perhaps it was impulse. Cadence suspected that more than anything else... had she really been that afraid of her, that she jumped at any chance to seek protection from an equal or greater power? Mind still so set on running away from it all, that even when she'd woke up in a cot, half a sea away from her, she still felt the need to get even more distance?

She didn't want to think about it. In all honesty, she wanted to think about none of that mess. Yet it was the only thing she could. Fear brought her here, fear had put her into their ranks. But the fear of fleeing prey was no longer the driving factor, the irrationality long since passed, replaced with the conscious effort to try and earn her keep, her increasingly diminishing performance thus far despite her efforts included. And once that had passed, once it had all almost ended against those bandits, not even that was there anymore. The only thing she had to really care about now was the Promise.

But was the Royal Guard really the best avenue for the Promise? If he had just appeared to her sooner, if that been the driving force back then, would she have still been so eager to disregard the crone's words and rush to join? Or would she have taken it slower, let her body actually heal, instead of just making the injuries worse by rushing headlong into a frey of insane buccaneers who didn't know the meaning of 'retreat' or 'parlay'?

She didn't have the answer to that question. Maybe she would've. Maybe she would've thought more, and eventually been drawn into the guard regardless... or maybe she wouldn't have. Maybe she'd still been as impulsive as ever, do it because it seemed like a good idea and not a single a shred of evidence actually supporting why it was one. But in the end, it didn't matter. She was here now, in the crown's employ. She'd made her decision, and now she'd simply have to find a way to both fulfill her obligations to the guard and properly investigate the tome's warnings...however off the beaten path the former may end up taking her.

gEWFISM.png Myrdwyn shrugged before following after Belros, her wyvern following at his own pace. "May as well come with and get myself another fancy sharpened piece of metal, too. Except mine'r' on sticks, so they're better." She elbowed Cade a bit as she walked up. "Ones I've got now are good for their own stuff, but I need a general use pokin' stick, too."

The trio walks over to the armory, which seems to hold a host of swords, axes, and lances. Belros would note that the armory did not sell bows, but there were an assortment of swords and knives present. Inside the armory are a few other people chatting, and the shopkeeper is a burly man who seems to have just come out of a forge.

The boat journey was a little unexpected, but not unwelcome, considering it beat spending a month or even longer on Irvetos. At least there weren't any troubles this time.

Upon hearing the captain's words, Darius decided to just go explore the town, hoping to find both a magic store and a generalist store. If nothing else, it's worth checking if there's anything worth getting, he thought.

Belros takes a look at their selection but sadly no bows. However, one item did grab his attention. It was a Scimitar though it was a bit pricey. I wonder if there was anyways he could lower the price. He then looked at the dagger on his hip. He really would have no need for it after getting this sword, maybe if he traded it in the shop keeper would lower the price of that blade. He takes one of the blades of the rack and brings it to the counter with the shop keeper.

oFAdgyX.png

"So I was looking to buy this blade but it seems a bit pricey for my tastes and I wanted to know if you'd be willing to lower the price of it." He takes out the Iron Dagger from his side and places it on the table.   "How about I give you 500 Vespers and this pristine Iron Dagger here for that blade. This Dagger may have been used once or twice but it's nothing a quick run on the grindstone can't fix. So what do ya say? Deal?"

Belros leaves 500 Vespers on the table with the Dagger and takes the Scimitar. "Pleasure doing business with you." He thinks for a moment before asking the man.  "Hey, would you happen to know where I could get my hands on a bow in this town? Been looking for one here but bought this gem instead. Ha ha!" He chuckles as he asks his question to the shopkeeper.

"Alright I'll head over there then, thanks for tip." With that he waves as he exits out the door. His new destination, that mentioned archery shop. Hopefully they have a long range bow. He's always liked picking off people from such a far distance. It'll be nice to have a bow back on him again.

The shaman perused the tomes available for purchase, but ultimately saw nothing of note that he would want to buy.

"Hm...quite a few Druidic tomes, but not much from the Dread school..." he spoke as he turned to Helena. "Anything here that strikes you fancy? Otherwise I thought to look for a general goods store, see what's available there. Maybe a spare vulnerary would be good to have..."

Belros takes a stroll to find the archery shop. On his way, he hears a bit of commotion from the local tavern nearby. Walking past it, he finds the archery shop, and finds quite a few people discussing a variety of things inside. There seem to be a large variety of bows present in the shop.

"Not much really. Though, this could be a nice grab," Helena states, grabbing an Elwind tome and buying it. "I personally prefer fire magic, but wind magic is nice to have when you absolutely need to hit something. Out of curiosity, is there a particular reason why Druidic tomes don't appeal to you?" Helena asks, hoping to learn more about the class of magic.

Seeing the Rogue's trade, Cadence couldn't help but glance down at her own weapons. The mercenaries blade was getting worse for wear and the rapier she'd been armed with upon joining the guard wasn't that much better. Still though... didn't mean they could be melted down, slagged and used as scrap for another project. She didn't really care, if it would give a slightly better price. A Parrying Knife and Rapier would probably be a better combination than a long blade and rapier anyway.

Z0hN2Ba.png

"They've seen a bit more wear than I'd like to admit, but..." she addressed the shopkeep, removing the two blades from her belt and putting them on the counter "how much would you be willing to part with that Parrying Knife and Steel Rapier over there for, if I traded these to you as scrap metal?"

Belros looked at the longbows in stock. He was having trouble deciding which one he wanted but he ultimately went with a basic Iron one due to it being the lightest out of all of them. He then picks up on  the people inside talking about something. Pretending he's still deciding which bow he wants, he listens in on their conversation. Maybe he'll find out a nice juicy bit of gossip.

"Money, money, sweet money, haha!" Cass walked off the ship, tossing one of the beautifully beautiful Vespers he'd gotten practically from nothing from these people. 3,000 was way better than 300, that much was certain. What to spend it on, tho?

"Hmmm?" He puts a hand on his chin, ruffling a couple strands of his beard. "I sure wouldn't wanna spend 'em on something I'd only use to help these guys." He mumbles a bit too loudly, not really giving a crap. "Ale, then? Or something else?" He walks towards the general store. Later, he'd prolly head over to the tavern. A couple of hours was hella' lot of time. He'd need to eventually play for Idei. Tsk, all these unthough-through promises were gonna be the end of him.
