"Oh, so... you saw that too then..." Cadence sighed, getting up. Excellent, fucking excellent, and just when she was thinking she might be able to live the Anima's treachery down, "uh, anyway... I...don't really how to answer. Most of my time back home was spent training, every single day. Haven't really had the option to just do something for the hell of it since I was a little kid...though there is Anima I guess-" at the mention of the spirits, she held up a hand, palm open as a small flame burst into existence, self sustaining as it hovered in the air. It proceeded to spiral upwards for a foot or two before condensing itself down into solid form, molding and morphing in accordance with the girl's will. Before long, there in her hand hovered a humming bird, tiny wings beating in a blur and cocking it's head in interest as it zipped around the two of them.

"-I've had the spirits talking to me since I was a little kid, my father always told me I had a lot of talent. Never got to really train me though, they wouldn't let him, so... making me pick up a fucking sword instead, bunch of goddess damned fucks- er..." she shook her head at the remark, as if to push the thought away "eh, nevermind... anyway, I guess that's what I do for fun. Just feel it out, experiment and see what I can figure out."

she snapped her hands as she finished the remark, and the humming bird split apart down the middle before the air blazed with yet more fire, going from one to two birds just like that. They continued to frit about Myrdwyn with nigh animal-like curiosity, their heat surprisingly gentle and comforting, compared to the raw power and ferocity of typical fire.

Cass turned to the sound of someone's footsteps approaching, looking up only to see Idei on his way towards him.

cassfin19_by_ninjacyndaquil-db7edz5.png

"Try something a little closer to exhausted." He said, sighing as he got up, but then giving a short laugh to the other. He didn't appreciate his free time for relaxation getting interrupted, but it was fine, probably just 'cause it was Idei.

cassfin16_by_ninjacyndaquil-db4o23n.png

"Yeah, well, as much as not-hurt goes, there was this fella' right now who left a scratch mark right he-oh wait, it's gone already. Yeah I'm fine, haha." Cass grinned as he placed his hands on his sides. "On the other hand, you seem to have gone through heck. Gotta wonder if this is the norm with you people."

A hand gesture indicates that Cass needn't stand for him; they're both here to catch their breath after that harrowing battle. Instead, he simply sits down on the grass near him with the subdued manner of someone seeking friendly company but more than willing to simply sit in amicable silence should that be preferred over conversation.

Looking down at himself, Idei gives a light scoff at the remark, gingerly removing a healing salve from his belongings. Untying the pouch, he lifts his tunic to reveal the angry crossbow wound -- by far, the worst of his injuries.

2mBYxb1.png

"Us people?" he repeats with a questioning glance up at Cass, slathering the disinfecting poultice onto the wound as best as he can. He probably should have done this earlier, before losing so much blood, but everything had been happening so quickly. "What do you mean?"

SNIzbR0.png"Oh yeah, anima spirits. The uh, academy people said I could have learned to talk to 'em and stuff, but the whole magic thing was never really my deal. Too. . . I dunno. Floofy. Didn't feel like fightin', and I've never really been a book person. 'S cool though, and I respect the amount 'a work that goes into it." She idly held one gauntleted finger up toward one of the hummingbirds.

"uh huh..." The humming bird landed on the finger and began eying the Rider up and down. The construct was about as solid as it looked- like that of the real thing. It's heat however would've registered as nothing but a slight warmth to it's beholder. It was a bit odd, imagining the Wyvern rider as a mage. A drunk, rough and tumble mage more likely to challenge the enemy to a fist fight than a duel of spirits...

gS8A5U7.png

"I guess we're on opposite sides of the coin then. I never really liked fighting up close, using that thing to stick people" she nods her head over to the Steel Rapier, propped against the nearby rock "too personal for me; never really got how some people romanticize it so much, or think it's somehow honorable- I just don't see what's to admire about hacking someone's limbs off or stabbing or slicing them up with a peice of sharpened metal like a-" stopping to consider the company she was currently in, she kindly refrained from mentioning the word 'savage'.

5CEKNqZ.png

"...anyway. I'd rather just settle it from a distance. Leaves you less vulnerable, leaves less blood on your clothes, and you don't have to constantly stare the poor bastard you're killing in the eyes that way either. Hell, if I had a choice, I just would throw that rapier over there and all the other ones I've got with me into the lake... but the damn peices of trash are the only way I have to defend myself with now-"

one of the birds, specifically the one not on Myrdwyn's finger, but hovering near the rock, let out an ornery chirp of disdain, as a strange whispering filled the air. Not but a moment later, the heat and light emanating from the construct grew tenfold before it finally collapsed in on itself and flew away from the two women, detonating near the water with an audible boom. Mist and ash sprayed from the shoreline, a good part of the sand now turned into a glossy layer of glass. Cadence sighed, though from the look in her eyes, it seemed she was rather used to the these types of antics.

"Alright, fine, not the only way I have, cheeky bastards..." To this, the whispering again filled the air, this time far more humored, as yet another humming bird formed in the same place where the previous one had died, flitting over and landing on the girl's head, where it promptly nested. "but...it's still the easiest one. Yeah, I might have talent and all, but... the fucking sword's been drilled into me. When someone comes running, my gut reaction isn't to call on the Anima most times, it's to raise my rapier and get ready to evade and counter; it's basically pure reflex at this point. Using the spirits though, that takes an actual bit of concentration, and since I can't really use tomes, they take their energy from me instead, which... isn't so bad anymore, if I'm careful with it.

Thing is though: stuff in battle happens fast, real fast, most of time I don't usually have a good enough window to get my focus together. And if I screw up, they'll leave me feeling like shit afterwards. And... as you just saw, they can be rather...infuriating at times. there are things these cheeky little bastards have done that make me wanna skin them sometimes... eh, but that's enough about me."

Mp7JnP7.png

"How'd you join up with the guard, if you don't mind me asking? They sent you out alone to come find us, afterall, so you've gotta have a lot of experience, or... just pissed off the wrong Commanding Officer, right?"

The explosion startled Myrdwyn a bit; she hadn't expected something like that, to say the least. Didn't that mean Cadence was actually an incredibly powerful mage? After all, she was also manipulating the spirits - to an extent - without the assistance of a tome, something that only the greatest mages were supposed to be able to do. Her musings were cut off, however, by the woman's inquiry.

gcV3lkg.png"Nah, I'm not that much of a pain in the ass. When you guys dropped off the face of the earth, they had ta find ya quickly. One flier can move faster than a ship, and Ecquis over there can carry a lot more than some fancy winged horse in case ya got yourselves into a lot of shit. Plus wind doesn't knock him around near as much." Her expression turned distinctly sour for a moment at the mention of pegasi, but as she continued it returned to her normal cheeriness. "That and I ain't exactly a pushover in a fight, if I may say so myself."

Cass's sigh of discomfort turns into a yelp of relief as he sits back down along with Idei. He winced a bit at the sight of the wound.

cassfin18_by_ninjacyndaquil-db58009.png

"Yeesh, cover that thing up and have someone like Emilee take care of it maybe?" He said, looking away. He wasn't a particular fan of such sights.

"You people as in you, the group, Royal Guard or whatever. With that kid Madante too." Cass gave a brief response, still very cautious not to glance at Idei's wound. "You go around and fight battles and do this kinda stuff. I've only gone with you for a lil' bit and already I've gotten involved in two such skirmishes. Wanna bet how much longer until I get something like...that wound, heheh." His laugh is bitter as he points, covering his eyes with a grin on his face. It doesn't sound like he's complaining about it, though. He himself didn't know why or what was even going on regarding him traveling with the Guards so his situation was odd at best and utterly insane (like that horseman's) at worst.

At his reaction, Idei looks up. Somehow, he hadn't expected a man who looks like Cass to be squeamish about injuries. The poultice stings, but it's little worse than wounds he's experienced before and nothing that some care and a bit of jaw-clenching won't get him through.

043Qx9C.png

"You're part of the Royal Guard now too, you know," he remarks wryly, though doesn't pursue the admonishment further. He's not unfamiliar with the feeling of being part of something, only to not really feel like you are. In fact, it makes him think of his own situation, maybe equally as transient.

2mBYxb1.png

"No one ever said it wouldn't be dangerous," he continues, smoothing out the edges of the poultice with his fingers and then gingerly replacing his tunic again to conceal it. "But protecting people who can't defend themselves is important. And for me, at least, it's something to do. I'm done, by the way."

"So you are a bit of veteran then. How long have you been with the guard, and uh..." she gazed back up the slope of the shoreline and towards the manor across the lake, the faint shape of a draconic being still visible "how'd you meet that wyvern anyway? He seems alot calmer than what I've heard they're like."

Darius observed the field and, after noticing, in the distance, the enemy commander fall to Rayne's lances and the rest of the enemies fleeing, he breathed a sigh of relief.

"That got rough, but...at least it's over for now." he spoke out to no one in particular as he sat down on the grass a small distance away from everyone else and started using what few supplies he had to start bandaging up his axe-induced wound.

"Oh thank the heavens you're done." Cass gave a short sigh of relief as he could now finally lower the hand he'd been holding over his eyes. "I s'ppose you're right." He added, while not sounding quite convinced. Scratching the back of his head, he looked up at the sky, unimpressive as always, but kinda...poetic maybe. He wasn't good with words though. Nor wounds. Nor worms. Words on 'W' seemed to be his bane. Furthermore, the little speech about protecting those who couldn't protect themselves irked a little smile from the big guy and he glanced at Idei.

"Yeah yeah, that does feel good. Although well, nothing good lasts forever and so these guys might just fall apart or the new baron in the East might just end up being even more of a douche than this one. What was the Romani family even doing without proper guards, sheesh, hehe. If he ain't payin' he ain't payin', but stuff's still gonna come for some insurance." He grinned, resting his hands on his knees. "I've not yet taken you up on that offer to play somethin' I've learned from nomads. Maybe some other time, 'kay, t'was a long battle. Speaking of things we have to do...I need to...well, you know, nature calls." Peeing on the battlefield wasn't an option and quite frankly, he'd gotten lotsa fluids into his system earlier today and it'd been bothering him through the whole day. Since the euphoria brought with the battle's end and the moment of relaxation he'd just had had faded away, as he said, nature called. On his way, as he waddled like some penguing trying to hold the torrent off, he wasn't much paying attention about people and so, as he moved further away from the jist of the group, his foot suddenly got entangled in something and he fell on all fours.

cassfin18_by_ninjacyndaquil-db58009.png

"Whoa-!"

Cass tripped over Darius. Whatever events this would bring into motion was for the future to unravel...

Nothing good lasts forever? Idei supposes he has a point. He hadn't thought about it much during the battle but it is strange that the Romani family had no bodyguards of their own, if what everyone says about their wealth is the case. One would think they would be more careful, protecting so much. At least, that seems to be the norm in Veritias, and places outside of the Arcadian sands . . .

2mBYxb1.png

"I don't understand what you mean by 'insurance'," he replies, figuring it's just another one of those mainland things he hasn't come around to yet. Especially when it comes to money, that always seems to be the case. "But even if misfortune comes later, it's still worth it to do good now . . . " He trails off with a frown, not really sure what he's saying anymore. But then Cass moves to get up and he nods, lifting a hand in dismissal, equal parts disappointed and relieved. "Another time."

On his own again ( even his attempts to 'fit in' with someone not from the Guard are falling short; he's starting to wonder if he should stop trying ), he brings out his bow. Within a couple minutes, he's in his own thoughts, meticulously waxing the bowstring and humming a quiet, elegiac melody under his breath.

"Oh man, it's gotta be, what. . . Ten years now? Or thereabouts. Depends if ya count training or not. The scaly bastard came into the picture on my first assignment." She paused for a moment. "Lemme straighten out the details in my head. . ."

yWRKETb.png

"They sent me up to the Equinox Isles on a scouting mission. I was still in training at the time; was all done with the foot combat stuff, but I was tryin' ta get into the flying corps. Went up there attached to a squad of sky knights; the leader was this older guy, just as good with a healing staff as he was with his claymore. There was also this cartographer, who sorta smelled like a mix between mildew and sadness; he had his own set a' guards with him, since he came after us in a boat."

4dnFIdJ.png

"I, uh, was havin' trouble with my pegasus. The picky little shit didn't want to do anything I said once we actually got to explorin'; pretty sure he was just following the other ones while we were in a group."

UcB1EYG.png

"I eventually ended up settin' down in a field to sort him out. Well, apparently he had an issue with what I was tryin' ta tell 'im, 'cause he threw a hoof at me and flew off. Wandered around lost for a while since the place looked so different from the ground. Thought I was gonna die, to be totally honest, especially when I almost walked on a giant flyin' lizard and the goddamn pegasus had my lance. Instead of eatin' me though, he just sorta licked my face and then sat on me 'til I cleared my head."

yWRKETb.png

"Dunno where he came from or where he was going, but he seemed to like me well enough. After another hour or so of wanderin' around with him, the rest of the squad spotted me and hauled me back. He followed me back home and everything; had to stop the bowman from putting an arrow in his head when we landed, though. That's pretty much where the interestin' part ends. We got Ecquis trained up to fly right, and they kitted me up with some more armor 'cause he can carry more than those sissy horses. Good riddance to that uniform, too; have you seen the shit some of those pegasus knights wear?"

"Heh... yeah, actually" Rayne breifly flashed through her mind as she answered, but more so the various flyers she'd seen all too often back home. In all honesty, odd as the Airheads armor had looked to Cadence at first, it was nothing compared to whatever the hell passed for it with those lot

Mp7JnP7.png

"The holy guard's got a bunch of them, all wearing breastplates with these... ridiculous frilled-skirts and stuff, some of em even where blouses underneath, with these high rimed boots and all, I think. hehehe, my sis used to make fun of em all the time, after she'd been asked whether she'd be using an Elysian Whip- said she wouldn't be caught dead in that stuff no matter how great flying apparently was...eh

5CEKNqZ.png

Then she... also kinda threatened to take that Crossbow of hers and shoot them all out of the sky if they... dared to ever ask her again. The conversation got a bit dark after that, but it had been really funny up till that point...anyway, I know what exactly you mean."

"Wuh!" Darius felt someone walk straight into him as he was resting on the grass before falling over. He stood up, hand still held over his wound and looked at the figure that fell over. "Hey, watch where you're going!" he spoke out with a clearly irritated voice before realizing something.

"Wait, you're...you're that musician from Gateon Port, right? The one I saw run around and help the others...I admit I didn't get a chance to talk to you before...what's your name and how did you end up joining our band? You can call me Darius." the shaman inquired.

"I don't know what to tell ya. Emilee... she's not really my type, I don't think- so my eyes haven't really bothered drifting down there much. Who knows though, I've seen a lot of stuff out of healers and clergy; holy magic can do some weird things sometimes. Maybe she really does sparkle in a certain light..."

"For heaven's sake I need to pee goddessamnit!" Cass shouted as he pushed himself back onto his feet and ran as fast as he could over to the treeline, hiding behind the canopy as he finally releived himself...

------------------------------------------------------------------

He came back couple of minutes later. In the distance, he could see Idei doing...something. He couldn't make out what exactly, no matter how much he squinted. He had other people on mind now though, especially this guy he apparently walked right into.

cassfin5_by_ninjacyndaquil-db02tsg.png

"So now that's taken care of." He stretched, up down, did a couple squats. Wooo, he felt like a new person. "Sorry about earlier. You saw what needed to be done so I don't gotta explain anything to ya." Cass grinned at Darius. "Nice to meet ya, by the way and yes you got that right. Name's Casserole, Beef Casserole. But everyone calls me Cass." He sat back down next to Darius as he spoke. Hopefully by then, Darius would have finished wrapping his wounds up, else Cass would need to cover his eyes or risk getting bile all over his current conversation partner. "It's funny really, I joined 'cause of your healer, Emilee. She just...pulled me into your fight back then. And I stuck around." There was no need for a long and tedious explanation. Cass wondered if there even was one at all. He kicked a lone pebble away. "Feels like I still don't know half you guys. Better do something about it before it costs me my other eye, am I right? So what, you can do some pretty great magic, right? Mine can only be used to reinvigorate people."

"I was a little busy in a different part of town at the time, so I must have missed how it happened. Still, even if somewhat reluctantly, the fact that you stayed with us shows that you are willing to stay with us." Darius speaks, holding his hand on his abdomen. Even though he's done taking care of the wound and it's now hidden, the pain lingers, a sensation he knows all too well, even if not necessarily physical.

"As for my magic, yeah, I guess it can be considered that, even if it only has one role. All types of magic have their place on the battlefield, though. In fact, I'd argue your invigorative ability might be even better, overall, than my ability to...well, kill anyone foolish enough to stand in the Royal Army's way."

"Yeah, well, but mine works only if there's someone on my side to actually play for." Cass reponded. "I also suppose you actually studied your kinda magic. I just, Iunno, do my magic. It took some practice, yes, but I suppose I'm self-taught for the most part. 'S why I can't do it right even after so long." Seeing the other holding his hand on his abdomen, Cass kinda had to wince though even if there was no gashing open wound poking him in his eye. He turned slightly more serious with his next notion.

cassfin7_by_ninjacyndaquil-db0398o.png

"So is it really that you can't use your magic for anything other than killing? I heard stuff and unfortunately actually experienced some of it on my own skin, the feared dark, or well, ancient magic but Iunno how it works. It always bugged me, since my thing seems to come from thunder which can also be kinda brutal."

"...well, it's more manipulation of the elder spirits that defines dark magic, so, with enough...coercion, I guess, one can convince them to do something more benign. However, from my studies and my own experience, what they want the most is for practitioners to delve deeper into their secrets and the way they seem to do so is with promises and demonstrations of power...which, the vast majority of the time, involve exactly that, killing or injuring others."

On 4/29/2017 at 8:03 PM, Hukuna the Undying said:

Rayne swiftly moved on to her question though not allowing either of the woman time to question her or to linger on the last thing she had said. "Beau and I saved you. I... suppose I got to take you flying a bit earlier than expected. You just weren't awake for any of it."

Clarisse was going to respond but the pegasus rider moves on too quickly. Guess she'd rather not dwell on it.

Balling her hands around her staff, and with a fiery anger in her eyes Emilee turned around walked towards the wyvern rider and Cadence and with her strength behind it she bopped Myrdwyn in the head. "No, it does not sparkle!" She yelled. "I got embarrassed because I don't want people talking about my ass... I mean my butt!"

Winding up her arm she whacked Myrdwyn again, and then used the swing of her first attack to come back around for another two hits making a three hit combo that would hopefully shut the wyvern rider up. Panting heavily and blushing, Emilee said. "I work hard on my body, and it's not for the likes of you to look at it!"
