[IC] TotMV:G2: The Battered Hero

Well, we could prepare if we waited... but I guess that's not really and option anymore. Edmond warily grabbed the handle of his arc welder; it was unlikely anything good was on the other side of the door. Keeping one eye on the door as Mar attempted to open it, he edged towards one of the hallways that branched off from the main area, and took a peek down it.

The flare doesn't do much but make it even harder to see in the room than it already is; the stark whiteness of it sharply contrasts the surroundings. It looks blindingly bright at first, but it's actually not that much brighter than the outside rooms - though this is definitely electrical lighting, or at least something closely mimicking it. Adding to the incongruousness is the continuation of the decor pattern around the edges of the room; tapestries and ornamental armor once again line up along the left and right walls, though the structure behind them is smoothed and bright. Most striking, however, is the contraption in the center of the space: a somewhat elevated platform with a set of robotic arms, numerous and varying in size with two large ones with welding apparati on their ends taking prominence. A faint hum echoes from the back of the thing, as something glowing and occasionally sparking with electricity connects to the rest with a series of wires.

You feel a faint, but unshakeable foreboding as the flare ceases, and the light level in the room drops to more normal amounts.

Moral grey lines. Visrii turned serious, a rare break from his usual causality. Perhaps he needed to explain himself.

"I do morally wrong things in favour of the morally righteous. The 'heroes' that parade my realm do naught but squander on their glory.

Many times one will be faced with a diversion. Will you kill 10 innocents to save a hundred? How about if they were your family, your company? What would you do then?

These questions I do not ponder over. I do the act and be done with it, unlike those who die in a clutch of ardent honor.

However, if these moral scales are absent, then my own profit is one the first line. This has been so for my recent ventures, since the realm of Stravaga has been in moral depravity for so long."

Visrii stopped a fair way behind the grandiose door. Obviously, this was an important door, with intricate patterns running around it.

If Visrii's experience as a merc told him anything, it was that there, behind it, was a strong enemy - perhaps even the 'boss' of the place.

...and the recent light drop didn't help either. Visrii tensed and drew his weapon.

"I'd talk a little longer, but I think we'll have contacts soon. Eyes up."

"So sir Visrii, what is, in your opinion an appropriate amount of force to exert on this particular new contraption? What I am saying is, how should we blow it up? I want to know what happens when we do that, for science of course".

Huh, this guy has the tendency to not listen, Visrii took mental note. But since he seemed the most vigorous out of the company, it seemed to his advantage he'll keep Solomon as an ally.

"I probably can't buckle the contraption. I am doubtful that the owner of the place would likely have made his defences weak enough to let a small company break his barracks."

Visrii brought up his weapon. "Though," he added, "it wouldn't hurt to try."

Visrii charged a spear of lightning and threw it against the contraption, anticipating its reaction.

Solomon generated a wall of books in order to try and block the thrown lightning bolt while saying "Now, now comrade Visrii, it may not be such a good idea to give the lightning powered machine it's breakfast now would it? Charging in and trying to immediately smash stuff without trying to understand context sounds like something one of your world's so called heroes would do".

Visrii again noted the noticeably condescending tone. He was starting to get less and less comfortable with this idea of camaraderie.

"Doing nothing but staring at it would not help either. And," he waved towards the aged tapestry. "If you can make sense of this, then be my guest."

"...heyyy...are you there, Visrii?"

Wyvis again, from the faint distance.

"It's been exactly 5 ticks since our last conversation." Visrii transmitted back, in a somewhat angry tone. "What more do you want?"

Visrii lowered his weapon and retreated to near back of the group, where he could prepare a bit more in case of the door opening.

"...you said you were last at Cainwood, right? Uh, I just checked the logs, Cainwood is not actually a place."

This alarmed Visrii. "What? I am pretty certain it most definitely is. Check it again. East Uphernfade, next to the Emerald Expanse."

"Mmm, yeah. Township of Cainwood was destroyed in the Undead Uprising 20 years ago. Archives of Nivinuxis is pretty reliable too."

Visrii remained silent. Although his memory remained fuzzy before his Jump to this realm, he could trace out the faces of the people he had drawn contract with.

"There's some serious time contortion shit going on here. Jumping realms is heard of. Jumping timelines is a whole new level." Visrii growled.

"Yeah, I'll keep you informed of more findings. I'll take a company down to the site. Will keep you informed."

"Try not to call me every 5 ticks."

Visrii heard Wyvis laugh. "Okay, I'll TRY."

Visrii shook his head and turned his attention back to the door. His homeland was in turmoil in both literal and political sense. He needed to get back and fix it quick-smart. All the more reasons to stay alive.

Edmond breathed a sigh of relief as the lightning was intercepted.

"I'm going to get a closer look, alright? Try not to shock me..."

Rather hesitantly, he approached the contraption, and took a closer look at the glowing sparking object, taking care not to disrupt it in any way. Each time a shower of sparks was emitted from the device, he flinched slightly, uncertain as to what would happen. When he was at the point where Visrii's lightning had been stopped, he stood still. From this point forward, there was no certainty that there would not be some form of motion detection.

((What does he see?))

"Hah, that's not really my specialization Visrii, hey Alexandria, can you help make any sense of them? I'm going to try and make sure that he", Solomon points the hesitant looking engineer "Won't get himself killed, so yeah, try and watch each other's backs while I'm away".

He flies over to the engineer and says "Hey, would you like a bird's eye view of the mechanism? and do you have an adequate source of light?".

"I have enough light, but I'm hesitant to go any further. I'm pretty certain that I'm safe here, as nothing happened when the lightning and the books were here... There might be some sort of motion detection further along. If the birds eye veiw involves flying over to it, I don't see how that would be any safer..."

"I don't really know. I suppose so...What would happen if I'm not? I haven't had much that would accurately test my willpower..."

This idea was becoming increasingly unsettling.

"Let's wait. We can see if anyone else has any ideas. We don't know their origins; perhaps they've seen something like this before?"

"Well let's see...what happened to the last guy", Solomon opens the book he had been carrying and flips the pages a bit before settling on a single page, "Ah yes, it says here that the last man who failed became fixated on a certain idea, that he was about to die, and that there was nothing he could do about it, figure out what happens next yourself, although I had used it on Snow before, and it didn't end up failing completely and utterly...so you should be fine as long as you, you know, don't think about being torn apart by wolves...or something."

After a brief period of awkward silence, which was broken by Edmond's response eventual response.

"Well that, or we could have Alexandria go over there and smash it to pieces.... coughs. you haven't damaged the book right?"

Edmond decided that that question did not need to be answered at the moment, and returned to his attempts to puzzle out the function of the strange device. He was hoping that someone among their motley assortment would have some input on the matter.

After a couple moments, the unmistakable hum/whir of machinery coming to life sounds through the room as the arms begin to move. Two streams of a dark something focus on the center of the platform, and the arms come in immediately, adjusting, manipulating the rapidly forming pool of darkness. In seconds, one can make out the outline of something familiar - a rounded form with spikes, just like the Heartless they'd fought on the way here.

"Hey Edmond, how many pieces do you need us to leave intact to study something of worth?"

Solomon points at the suspicious machine as it creates a new heartless "Because that is the sort of problem I would like to see wiped out from the face of the earth".

Solomon steps off of his floating platform and raises his fists, "Hey everyone can we stop admiring the local artwork and receiving long distance calls for a moment? It's time to get dangerous"

Solomon sees Kyle throw a grenade at the machine, which would have been alright if Edmond wasn't so damn close to the thing, he points his now glowing ring at Edmond while shouting "Look out sir!" Before a bright beam of light shone on Edmond.

It took Edmond a moment to realize that this man had just tossed a grenade at an object about ten feet (?) from him. Once he understood though, his training kicked in. He ran four steps, knowing that there was still some time left on the internal timing mechanism, and then threw himself to the ground in a ball, relying on his kevlar to protect him.

Even from his curled position, he saw the light reflected upon the walls as grenade detonated, and was shocked by the volume of the explosion.
