In the grand hall, at the back right, or in the agate circus, there is a clown who will battle you and give you shards.

Depending at which part of the story you're at, there are two places to rebattle trainers.

1) There are several trainers you can battle in the Main Hall in Reborn city, and 2) There is a clown at the North-East part of Agate Circus. 

 

The first one is first unlocked after you get your 3rd Badge, and the second is available the moment you enter the area.

The trainers in the Grand Hall are actually unlocked before the first gym, you don't have to wait until you get the 3rd badge.
