kinnydiaper64
just asking but how is everyone motivated to try out mono runs for certain types?
ZEL
It just seems like a fun challenge. There's only so many times I could beat the game regularly before starting to ask myself how it'd go if I decided to restrict myself in some way. The game is challenging when you first play it, but once you start to get used to everything, it's not very exciting any more to beat the battles when you already know what kinds of tactics will guarantee you an easy win. Or, at least, that's how it went for me. I feel like it's just natural to want a challenge eventually, or else the game stops having replay value after a while. Trying to put extra rules on myself when I play makes me approach things from a different angle and come up with new strategies that I might not have thought to use before, and makes me use Pokémon that I usually don't pay attention to. (I mean, my Steel mono made me fight Julia with a Wormadam-T for an ace...) Of course, that doesn't mean you absolutely have to try out a mono if you don't think it'd be fun for you. I've seen all kinds of creative runs on here; there's people using only 'mons based on certain animals, or ones with a specific BST, there's rainbow runs and all types of 'lockes... Then there's completionist runs for collecting Pokémon or items, and now that the game is coming closer and closer to having all 'mons available, it's also getting easier to do character runs. A lot of people are trying monos with their favourite types, but it can be just as much fun to try to use a type you usually avoid, or one that you think is difficult to play with in Reborn. My last mono run was motivated partially by spite towards the idea that the normalbirds are useless Edited December 31, 2016 by ZEL
Atticus
Personally: • It adds a + challenge, since you're limited to use just a certain type and you need to find a way to cover your type's weakness in some battles. Meanwhile, it gives you a possibility to sweep an entire team depending of your type. • You can use mons that you never used before! I didn't use a lot of mons in my normal playthroughs because I already had a Pokémon of that type on my team, so it would only bring disadvantage for my team against some types. In mono runs you can pick your favorite type and train your favorite mons of that type;;; • It adds a lot to your character. In Reborn, for example, all main characters have a type that they focus on, and your character uses multiple types?? That's some huge bullshit right there (not really). So, if you like to give a personality to main characters in Pokémon games, that's a good way to do it.

Although not as challenging as I initially thought, it is still much harder than a normal run (especially Fern's god forsaken Ludicolo, I'm glad he got rid of that disgusting thing). And I have been falling in love with pokemon I haven't ever used before like Krookodile. If you want to do a mono run, try going with a type that you don't normally like that much. I first planned on using my favorite type, Water, but then I gave up on that idea since I thought it would be too easy. And I have to say that I am glad I did it, it made me appreciate pokemon I would have never used normally. The run becomes much more interesting when you are forced to use pokemon you normally would avoid in vanilla runs. So I definitely recommend going for the types with less pokemons or with pokemon you usually avoid.
