Using custom sprites

Ummm hi?

I've been playing Pokémon Reborn for a while now (and struggled with it, holy hell, that is some difficulty) but I also greatly enjoyed it in every aspect. But I didn't make this post to praise the game for its greatness, I have come across a weird idea.

I was wondering if using custom made sprites would be a good idea. I could make the sprites myself and, as far as my RPG Maker knowledge goes, I only have to replace the .png files in the Graphics folder. While pondering about that idea, I encountered some questions:

1. Is it acceptable for me to change the games files? There obviously has been a lot of work put into them and I would in no way want to insult the artist.

2. Is my theory even correct and all I have to do is change all the required image files?

3. How were the original sprites created? By looking at them, it becomes quite obvious, that some sort of template/base must have been used and then customized. However, I can't find anything like that online, only generation IV and upwards. So were the templates also self-made? Or am I just too stupid to find them?

4. Would this impact the online features? I personally haven't tried out the new online battle and trading features yet, so I'm not sure how they look/work, but I'd guess that the other player would just see the regular sprite that I replaced in my personal Graphics folder, right?

I would really love some answers and opinions on this ;)

(Also sorry if I posted this in the wrong place or a similar topic is already going on. I always get overstrained when I join a new forum/messageboard/etc.)

1. As far as I'm concerned, tampering with the files is fine since its purely client-side.

2. Yep.

3. Something like that. I think RPG Maker has pre-made pokemon sprites but people can change them. If you look at the dev blogs, you can see some of the custom shinies which are pretty sweet.

4. As long as you're not hacking in unreleased pokemon, fiddling with the graphics file is fine. And yeah, only you will see the adjusted sprites.

Wow, that was a quick answer, thank you!

I was mostly thinking about adjusting the sprite of the main character, which is going to be a ton of work on its own. I could just go ahead and edit over the already existing sprite(s), but I'm kinda afraid of screwing up any proportions since a part is covered in hair. (I'm talking about the female versions, btw.) That's why I was wondering if a base or template exists and where I could find it. If I can't find/use one that's fine too, it would just be a lot easier with one.

i don't know if there is a base but you can use any of the other sprites as a base, just be sure you name the file the same that the one you want to change, also you may will want to save a backup of the original, just in case

Edit: maybe you can search on google for more sprites for base? just be sure the format is the same

There isn't a blank base that they're all based on. Most of the sprites are built out of bits of canon and default essentials sprites. Ame heavily edits them though.

However if you're redoing the player character remember you'll also need to change fishing, running, surfing, tauros riding sprites and so on so it will be a fair bit of work.

Here's an example of Ame (the creator of Reborn) making Luna's overworld sprite.
