Pokemon in Space [IC Chapter #03]

Cathode picks up the Gabite mechamon and holds both of them in front of her. 

"...why would someone's mechamons be scattered with so big difference in distance..?" she mumbled,  "and what pokemon is the first one taking after? ... and most importantly, who do they belong to?"

 

Deeming it a suitable time, she took out the A-Comm and thought aloud, so that the rest can hear her train of thought and maybe offer any input,

".... according to Clarence's pantomime,  we are looking for some high ranking person within the Aether Foundation that has a mustache.  And this guy is connected with these figurines.

 So..."   she went next to the clefairy so that they can both see the screen, "I'm gonna go to the auths list page and scroll till we find someone with a mustache in their picture. Please acknowledge if its the right person or not. If they are, I will call them. If not, I'm gonna continue scrolling down till we get the right one. Sounds good? I'm starting!"

CORRIDOR 5 (KALVA, TAYLOR, SENA)

Terry sighed and nodded. A droplet of sweat trickled across his forehead as he looked at the children around him. His eyes falling on Taylor, he grinned. "Err...that Morelull ain't even yours, and I don't think recalling our Pokemon now would be a great idea." He muttered. The Morelull climbed on top of Taylor's head in the meantime and was seemingly content with the position it found. On the other hand, that boy, Kalva, and Sena, they were communicating with the Wailord. The Wailord kept responding in regular intervals, though its cries grew thiner and shorter by the repetition. It was calling on the last of its strengths.

 

[The party proceeds into the new area.]

 

As the crew swimmed over to the clearing at the end of the corridor, nearly all light from the crystals was gone, and the Wailord gave one last cry, accepting them along with it. They stopped in the echoing chamber around them, and they weren't alone. Even in the darkness, the overwhelming presence of a goliath Pokemon was overbearing. Its breathing rumbled the walls and its form was clearly distinct even without any light. A thicker darkness surrounded by a faint pinkish glow. Something was terribly wrong, though. As wrong as could be, in fact. The Wailord was dead. It would be apparent to Quina, who was maintaining a connection with it, and to Kalva as well to an extent. Seeing the two of them react to this realization would invoke the same epiphany in the rest of the group.

Why, then, was it still breathing?

The answer was all around the group, suffocating their throats in silence. The Nexus was death itself, shrouded in a coat of life. The Wailord was likely dead the moment its home Micro Nexus merged with #08, along with it.

The Wailord let out a weak cry.

Then a low but growing rumble.

Before the might of an earthquake shook the entirety of the undeground maze, and a shrilling screech broke the silence. A wave pushed the party back to the edge of the chamber as something huge crushed its body into the surface of the water-the Wailord was rampaging, hidden by darkness. The party could see nothing, but Verna could hear, and Quina could feel. Taylor had a sense of what was going on as well. The Wailord's large body smashed into the chamber's walls, sending pieces of drained crystal crashing down towards the water, onto itself. The party was safe as they were far away, but they still sent waves across the water that had them holding on to remain on the surface.

The Wailord cried in pain as the crystals fell on it. In the moments they hit, tearing flesh could be heard. The crunching of bone, and the light around it intensified for a moment, revealing to the party a horrifying scene of a Wailord's body, half already transformed into an almost crystalline rock substance, but its eyes very much alive and observant. Unlike Meggie who had been exhuding the same aura as this Wailord, its eyes were clear of any madness save for one induced by the stress it was going through. There was probably no helping it, except to finish it off. Cut the power of the Nexus that was holding it alive. Its wounds weren't healing in the water. There was no energy left in the crystals around it. What Wailord needed was to release the remainder of the energy that was still coursing through the body.

Frederick spied the Krabby. It was similar to pictures he had seen of its kind in the Academy while he was studying, but it seemed... off somehow. There was something odd with it, but he didn't quite know what exactly it was. He had a strange feeling about it - that something dangerous might happen if they attacked it, so he decided to observe first the creature before striking it with the help of his teammates.

Frederick was used to defensive battling. Of course, he was someone who wouldn't recklessly attack an unknown creature. It was in his principle that it was far too dangerous to do so, and it is best first to gather some data before making a move. That was one of the reasons why he got left out of the party in the early phases of their journey - his cautiousness caused him to be wary of any suspicious signs. Frederick called on Theodore from his side. "Use Baby Doll Eyes on the Krabby, Theodore," He confidently ordered. 

Theodore approached the Krabby quickly, and met him not with hostility, but with kindness as he angled his eyes in a cute manner to the Pokemon as if he were asking for sympathy or compassion. He continued to do this for a few seconds, making himself look more and more cuter and pleasant to the Pokemon, so that he would not attack the group haphazardly.

As Kalva heard Wailord's cries getting shorter and shorter, he matched it with equally accelerating pace, half-wading half-swimming through the crystal saturated waters. Kalva was painfully aware of the concept of 'golden time'. 1 hour, and past that, the slight chance that Kalva was able to help Wailord would be extinguished. With time already dwindling from their discussion on whether or not they should go, Kalva was frantic to reach Wailord as quick as possible, especially now that he realised that Wailord was losing consciousness. Eventually, Quina, who had been clinging on Kalva's head for some time, paused to pull lightly on Kalva's hoodie. Kalva had been only wading for Quina to breathe, and she was slowing him down. And with Verna already keeping in contact with Wailord, her role was no longer needed.

 

Something felt strangely upsetting to Quina, however. As Kalva took out her Aether-ball mid-swim, she felt like Wailord was...no longer there. Wailord was still there in the physical sense, but the signal was empty. As if Wailord's presence was 'what was once been' rather than 'what is'. She dreaded the worst, but they'd only find out when they got there.

After Kalva returned Quina, he transitioned into a full freestyle. Kalva wasn't the best swimmer, but necessity had Kalva speeding ahead through the corridor. Only after had he found even footing he took in a proper breath. Gagging a little from the desperate exercise, he immediately released Quina back out and held up the A-Comm like a flashlight above him.

His eyes met Wailord's and realised one horrible, infallible truth.

 

Wailord was dead.

No, even worse than dead. Wanting to die but unable to do so - cursed with terrible undeath as it was consumed painfully by the nexus.

 

With the full weight of the truth, Kalva sunk to his knees and tears burst. Rivulets of tears mingled with the life water and fell into the dark pool below.

He shook uncontrollably as a black wave closed in, shoulders heaving as his breath became unstable.

Quina quickly jumped into his vision and put her hand over her mouth, with practiced determination. Quina had always known Kalva's illness - and this... Quina was shocked as well; she had been anticipating it, somewhat, and she had braced herself for it. But for Kalva, Quina knew even prior knowledge would not have eased his misery. When Kalva stumbled, Quina must be there to catch him. She must stay strong.

With a tattered vestige of his mind, he recollected enough to mimic Quina's action, and stifled his breathing. After a few moments of breathing through his nose, his breathing established and the black tide receded. But the pain still burned - Kalva clenched his free hand with utter frustration and hopelessness.

As Kalva's tears continued to blind him, he heard Wailord cry out once again. He took in a sharp breath out of surprise and looked up, and saw the flash of light behind Wailord. Wailord was still alive - and suffering. Quina was filled with even more dread as her previous suspicions were confirmed. This Nexus was not a Nexus of Life - it was a parasite, slowly sapping all foreign life into its crystalline demise. At this point, Kalva stood back up, wiping away his face, his eye flashing curiously under his green hair. His chest still heaved sporadically, but he was standing. Quina was surprised Kalva had recovered so quickly from his suffering. Usually it took at least 5 minutes for Kalva to calm down properly. But perhaps, she gathered, Kalva had never recovered at all.

 

Wailord was hurting. Kalva felt even worse when he saw Wailord like this...but purpose it granted, and Kalva looked into Wailord's eyes once more, and realised what he must do. Kalva couldn't save Wailord...but maybe he could ease their suffering. The fact that he was even thinking among these lines hurt Kalva, poisoning him with age old guilt. But there was no other choice.

 

Feeling sick in his stomach, he pursed his lips as he and Quina braced for a fight.

Sena just stood there watching the poor Wailord, it's already dead but it still breathing. He have a mixed feeling of sadness and anguish, he feel powerless to do something. He know what to do, and he also know what he want to do, but in the end, Sena decide to let his group decide what to do... and hopefully won't regret any possible outcome.

 

"I don't know what the hell is going on right now... all I know is that, the Wailord is suffering, and... we have to do something!" He then look at both Kalva and Taylor, "if you guys decide to battle it and help the Wailord end his suffering... then I will help you guys... but if you guys wanted to find a way to help it then I will help too." He said calmly but you could feel that he wanted to do the latter one.

 

he looked at Verna who is flying around watching the whole situation, "Verna, please come here, it would be safe for you to be close to me... also wait for my further instruction." she nodded as she fly away, flying to Sena's side.

Shelly successfully catches Uno, but there is barely time to react. Theodore's moves serve little purpose than to confuse the Krabby, although it seems to be enough to hinder it in some way.

The explosion of purple flames from Axew's Dragon Rage obliterates the weakened Crabrawler, leaving behind some fried crab.

/Crabrawler 2 has fainted/

 

The Krabby seemed to have wanted to do something about Broughton's attack on the other Crabrawler before realizing it probably wasn't the best idea to find itself in the line of fire.

The Crabrawler looked at the Krabby with a tear in its eye before the very dirt beneath it barely held on against the force of Broughton's attack. The Crabrawler was sent flying high above the crystalline forest scenery, disappearing in the distance.

Lampy jumps in front of Uno to protect her, lanters flickering on like light bulbs. He seems uncertain whether to attack, while Uno remains dazed. Shelly should probably keep holding on to her for now.

Krabby starts sweating, suddenly cornered by the team's joined attacks. In apparent desperation, it releases its aura much in the manner Meggie did the last time in #08.

The Krabby's right pincer flares up into a dark, almost blinding crimson shade. Its presences grows larger until it releases a huge and expanding burst of energy in the direction of all the party's Pokemon, threatening to envelop them all.

Cathode picks up the Mechamon. As she walks over to Clarence, the Clefairy facepalms with its small paw and just points at Terrence's contact on the list. He then gives Cathode an annoyed look and continues to stare at the Sableye instead.

 

[Zeta's Explorer activates]

"Cathode, watch out beneath you!" Zeta, who'd been quiet until now. Suddenly yells out at Cathode, giving the girl the incentive to look down on the ground and notice a pair of shadowy tendrils extending from the many shadows cast across the cavern chamber by the shimmering lights of the crystals surrounding the walls, giving her a chance to evade them.

Clarence reacts swiftly too, face contorting into an annoyed grimace of anger that just told the Sableye he knew that something was wrong, before a puff of pink smoke almost like candy cane forms around his body and he blasts a puff of the Fairy Wind at the Sableye, smashing it against the cavern wall. The Sableye yelps and cackles before sinking into the shadows, and the two shadowy tendrils also pull back and disappear.

 

Zeta breathes a sigh of relief. "Phew, that was a close one...they really wanted to trick us..." She sighs sadly, but shakes her head in resolve the moment later.

"Cathode, Clarence, let's get out of this room quick, they might attack again!"

 

[Will Cathode store the Mechamon into the group storage?]

[Oh, and also, the Porygon Mechamon seems to be missing again. The Sableye probably snatched it again while attacking you. Oh well.]

Radovan can go pick the Aether Ball with the Woobat up now. The duo have been met with an issue, though. Because of the interference, the mapping was incomplete, and didn't read a dead end here. They should probably attempt to move to a different path lest they want to face another Pokemon battle.

Things seemed to be getting a bit dicey, Shelly thought as she held onto Uno. That amount of power emanating from the Krabby couldn't help but be devastating. They'd gotten rid of the crabrawler's thankfully. No matter how dangerous this pokemon might be, things were always worse when the enemies had allies. "Good job, Axew! After the Krabby now!" From where Axew had finished roasting the Crabrawler, it was a bit of a distance to get over to the Krabby. So. . . Shelly thought to herself, now was the perfect time to use a move she hadn't tried yet. To take advantage of any weaknesses caused by others attacking. "Use Assurance!"

 

Axew rushed across the battlefield, though some might call it a slow rush, filled with violent fervor. The others were attacking as she ran, and she did her best to avoid the clashes between her allies and the Crab Pokemon, until she could get right in front of it. She launched into an assault, but differently than before. The Pokemon was attempting to take advantage of every opening, fighting unfairly. Aiming for sensitive spots, viciously trying to take advantage of blind spots, in general giving no quarter and showing no hesitance towards underhanded tricks.

 

Axew Action: Use Assurance on the Krabby, 60 power, doubles if others have damaged the target.

"I-it's one thing after another isn't it?"  Cathode groaned as she was getting her bearings again after having stormed out of the room with the others, and was now in the middle of the upper section of corr.1 .

"Better store the items for now..." she said as she was fumbling with them to do so, until she noticed she only held one, and not two. 

"What the...? That jerk!" She looked annoyed at her surroundings, and with a more cute than intimidating tone let out "Happy, you meanie? What's your game anyway?"  

After a long sigh, she stored the Gabite-mon, and tended to other matters to calm down.

 

"So, Clarence, apparently Mr. Terry is so taller than me that i never noticed his mustache, aha-ha-haa... thanks for the input tho." 

She moved on to call him, trying to get a clue on the situation, but as she did, she noticed that the underground map had been updated, and was now showing an opening in the middle of corridor 1, allowing faster access to corridor 2.

"Guess that's our next destination, then, since it's just some steps ahead."  She concluded. "Shall we go, then?" She said to the rest and started walking as she was finally calling Terry.

"Good work, Radovan!" Emmanuel cheered. "That turned out to be a dead end, though. Let's go south then, shall we?" He picked up Solosis and walked south down Corridor 9. He had a good feeling about the path ahead. There seemed to be the faint outline of a small room on the map, after all.

Radovan slowly walked up towards the Aetherball that contained yet another one of the many Pokemon he (and technically the Space Aether foundation) would own over his hopefully long and eventful career. And he then quietly picked the small thing up before he held it closely to his mouth to jokingly whisper "I have you now my precious". He then placed the Aetherball in his pocket while he gave Emmanuel a quick thumbs up, before he decided to perform his best (read: worst) approximation of a certain ethnic group's accent in a stunning display of casual racism. "Yuu did a goodu joobu as well". 

He glanced at the seemingly impassable crystal wall that was blocking their path after he said those words, and he quietly wondered how a group of people would reach the hallway that was apparently somewhere behind it. And so after a few moments had passed he decided to speak up and say "Or...and please bear with me for a moment. We could try and smash this crystal wall down to try and reach the hallway behind it.". He rather suddenly stopped talking for a moment to inject a dramatic pause before he continued with. "After we make sure that it is not a load bearing wall of course".

[DragonRage]

"Chances of successful rescue:  minimal at best," Taylor diagnoses in an even tone, "Damage to biological systems appears critical.  Morelull, please put the Wailord to sleep.  We must end its suffering as swiftly and painlessly as possible.  Jet, prepare yourself."  The meditite drops to the ground in front of Taylor, and solemnly sets his stance.

 

Taylor intends to battle.

"These crystals are evidently quite durable. I don't think that we're able to break the wall. That is, unless we get Cathode and Suzie here to give us a hand." Emmanuel frowned as he knocked the crystal walls gently with his hand. Suddenly, an idea hit him.

 

"-Actually, Solosis might be able to deal meaningful damage to it. It'll take a bit of time for the Rollout to build up, but it might just do the trick. What do you think?"

Sena looked at Kalva, he seems to realize that something is not right with Kalva's mind, but he decide to keep it to himself until he proven right, all he knows that the boy is ready to fight it. Sena then looked at Taylor who already command Morelull to put it to sleep.

 

He took a deep breath, focusing himself, erasing the thought of finding another way to save the Wailord, He decide to battle the Wailord to help it get its final resting. I promise I will help you to go back to sleep peacefully.

 

"Verna fly up! Be cautious for any sudden move that the Wailord would make! Until the Morelull manage to put it to sleep, focus on dodging any upcoming attack!" Verna nodded fly up trying to get closer to Wailord from above while being cautious for any move it would make.

Solosis readied herself in Emmanuel's arms as he lobbed her at the wall for a mighty Rollout!

Action: Solosis uses Rollout on the Crystal Wall in a succession, attempting to bring down the wall.

Frederick sighted the Krabby. It was somehow still quite active despite being weakened earlier with Theodore's Baby Doll Eyes. It even looked menacing with the way it attacked using Metal Claw. Frederick deemed that it was best to keep up with the defense. He wasn't that sure if everything would be alright if he simply attacked the Krabby. It seemed far too aggressive that what his initial observations noted.

"I will be keeping up the defense," He told his groupmates. "I believe that this Krabby is someone we shouldn't underestimate as it seems stronger than typical ones. I shall keep lowering its attacks. Please strike it with your strongest, so that we may suppress it."

He angled his eyes to Theodore. "Theodore, use Baby Doll Eyes once more." He commanded to the cute Bear Pokemon. Theodore immediately approached the Krabby once more and presented its cute charm to it once more, continuing to show its eyes that would seem to convince you to take it easy on it.

"A little light show ain't enough to stop me!" Despite her confidence, she had a feeling Broughton’s attacks couldn't stop its stronger power. A distraction would probably be the best option. “Broughton, circle around it. Try to get it with a Rock Smash!”

 

Crabrawler reluctantly decided to trust in her Trainer, dashing and circling around the Krabby to attack from behind it in hopes of pulling its attention away from her allies. Just like before, she pulled back her fist to launch an attack as strong as she could against the weakened Krabby.

Theodore and Axew are caught up in the midst of Krabby's attack as they've taken no precautions to dodge. Ironically, Broughton, the only one who was trying to bait the attack, ended up avoiding it.

The burst of light envelops Theodore, Axew and Lampy, knocking both Theodore and Axew unconcious before Axew could make her attack. Broughton, meanwhile, circled around Krabby and delivered a powerful punch to its back. Taking this into account, Uno thrusted herself forward, pointing at the Krabby. "N-now Lampy!!!" Lampy was still standing after the attack. The Steel typed attack could barely scathe him. He released the Electro Ball he'd been holding up and threw it at Krabby. The Krabby disappeared into an electrical discharge, and when the dust settled down, it was knocked unconcious, and the hue around it dispersed.

Before the party lays an unconcious Krabby, pincers half covered in rock, yet only on the surface; and a batch of Exeggcute. And not just any batch. The final batch. Uno places a hand over her forehead. "We should go back and get your Pokemon treated." She mutters, and the group returns to the base.

[Everyone's Pokemon were restored to full health.]

 

At the Base, the Exeggutor is awaiting eagerly. It has opened its eyes and was looking intently at the Exeggcute at its feet-er....trunk. The Exeggcute were coming to one by one, and have recognized their parent and guardian. The Exeggutor nods at you, and, to the surprise of all, actually gets up from its place, only to dig another hole to sit in a few metres to the side. However, where it once stood, there is now a gap leading down into the underground mines, like a slide in a playground.

The Aether Employees around you start gathering around the hole.

Nobody seems to be answering Cathode's calls. Terry is probably preoccupied with something...

On the other hand, as Cathode traverses the Mines with Zeta and Clarence, as they walk towards the apparent open path, the trio soon finds themselves faced with a-

-a wall. The path was a dead end. However, at the wall there seem to be some sort of wines growing, like ivy... Zeta is the first to notice from a considerable distance and grabs Cathode's sleeve, stopping her in tracks.

"Cathode, that seems to be a dead end. I can only see crystals and wines growing around them. There might be Pokemon there. Maybe they'll wanna play~?" What little worry was apparent in her voice at the start was gone within moments, and Clarence facepalmed. "Wanna go check it out!?" Zeta pleaded with sparkling eyes. Cathode could assume the girl was being a bit too excited to march into a potentially dangerous situation...

No matter how much Solosis tries, she can't even put a dent in the wall. And what's more worrying is the sudden sense of danger the duo feels as Solosis keeps hitting the wall, sending vibrations across the Mines...

The drained crystals - rocks that have fallen into the water from above, provide you and your Pokemon with a safe footing in about a circular 12 meter diameter. You are positioned on the side of the rock circle closer to the exit from the chamber. You can see a faint outline of the top of Wailord's head on the far side of the circle, so 12 meters from you. It's still echoing. Terrence is holding his head in panic. "Everyone, what do you think you're doing! We need to call for help!" He yells, overlooking the fact his A-Comm is buzzing when Cathode's is calling him.

 

The Wailord doesn't wait. It cannot wait. Smashing its huge body into the rocks beneath your feet, you can feel a tremor traverse through the air around you, shivering your bones.

"... This isn't working," Emmanuel had Solosis end the Rollout early by rolling against the water again. He picked her up shortly after, "maybe we'll call Cathode to help us out with this wall later, but for now, we have a mission. Let's head down the corridor."

He shrugged as he headed down corridor 9.

“Whoopsie.” Kai scratched the back of her head, realizing the rather ironic result of her plan. “You guys will be alright, right?”

Kai walked over towards the small hole, getting onto her belly to look down into the dark, scary path. It was definitely wide enough to fit them, as long as they all went one by one. Looking down the hole revealed nothing, as her vision could not see past the enshrouding darkness that would cover anyone willing to take the plunge. Was there even an opposite exit to the hole? Would anyone risk jumping into the hole with little chance of finding a way out once you find yourself stuck in the claustrophobic space? Many would probably refuse the invitation, bury the hole, and just find a safer method down. Even the most courageous might show fear upon their face at the prospect of reaching their destination at the cost of their sense of safety.

 

“This slide looks fun!” Kai waved to her friends to catch their attention. “C’mon, guys. The underground should be through here. We might find the Tree of Life!”

 

Kai Action: Jump into the scary hole of claustrophobia

The slide is short but fun, if a little bumpy and rough. It was all hardened soil and rock, after all. The Exeggutor probably merged into this spot when the Nexuses merged, cracking a pathway downwards.

After only a little bit, Kai popped up from the ceiling into a chamber lit by crystals embedded in the walls. She fell down on her two feet from several meters up, but was generally unhurt. She could let the others know it was safe now.

“Yahoo!” Kai gave a joyful yell as she neared the end of the slide, landing particularly unscathed onto the hard cavern floor. "Oh man, that was awesome!" She seemed unaffected by the recoil from landing on her feet, giving a hop in a circle as she shook the excitement out of her. Broughton and Anté were safely with her, inside their Aether Balls on her belt. Broughton seemed visibly shaken by the death slide, while Anté seemed as optimistic as his owner.

 

“Hey guys, the slide’s safe.” Kai took her A-Comm out to make contact with the rest of the group. “It’s also super fun, come on and check it out already!" Kai gave a look around, not seeing any of the Cadets in close proximity to her position. "I’ll go try to contact the others before you get here.” Kai switched off the call she left for Shelly and Frederick, trying to contact any of the others in the caverns. “Anyone around?” Kai gave a rather loud shout, hoping it could echo and catch someone’s attention. “I’m underground now and would rather not stick it alone.”

Betani pushes herself through the crowd. She too was small enough to fit through the hole, and she wasted no time. "Move." She said before jumping down.

 

She landed next to Kai moments later, stuttering as her feet hit the ground, but regaining her poise almost immediately. "I don't intend to wait for your buddies too long." She said to Kai. "We'll move out as soon as possible."

 

Another voice reaches Kai from above. "K-karla, I'm going too, please catch me!" It was Uno, and she came down the slide as well. Kai should probably heed her request.

I'm not too fond of of rushing straight into the next one!  Our attempts to clear this blockade will surely disturb the surrounding area and who knows what dangerous Pokemon we might attract this time!   Here, look the map! We can just go around from corridor 2 without much noise and check out what is on the other side from there!  C'mon let's go! "    Cathode tapped Zeta's shoulder with a slight force, urging her to follow her lead.

Zeta's protests were quelled before she could even voice them by Cathode pushing her away. "W-wait, but Cathodeeee. They might be bored or hurt. We gotta go plaaaaay!"

She complained but didn't put in any effort to fight against Cathode. Clarence kept quiet too. Vines implied grass types, and Suzie was a Rock/Ground type. Had they gone there and had a fight, he would've had to be the one to carry the weight. He really didn't want to be bothered by a responsibility such as that, so this situation suited his tastes.

 

As Cathode and the two return to the chamber where they dropped earlier, they hear what sounds like crushing from the direction where the others went to check out the alleged Wailord. Corridor 2 is calm, though, leading in the opposite direction of Corridor 5. The trio go through it without any problems. However, after taking a turn, they arrive at a crossroads.

 

"Hey Cathode. Which way should we go?"
