[IC] The Watchtower Chapter 1.0: The Green Peril

The sound of bells chiming in the distance awakens Lucius. He stretches out his arms and yawns for a bit before rising from the bed in the barracks. He looks around, but he doesn't see any of his fellow watchmen. Maybe they're actually at the main room? Lucius thinks. He looks out the window of the barracks and sees that the sun is slowly rising off in the distance.

"It's a brand new day and I'm excited to see how this second day will turn out," Lucius tells himself. "I should probably go and do the signal for the semaphore system. I remember that being used to change signals."

Lucius ascends to the roof of the watchtower. He approaches the semaphore system in the center area and immediately changes the shift signal to point out that the Day Shift is the one taking over. After this, Lucius descends down to the main room of the watchtower with a skip in his steps. He notices that his fellow watchmen, namely,  Robert, Georgey, and Lancelot, have fallen asleep on the floor. They seem to have fallen asleep from exhaustion. He looks to the other side and sees another man, a man who seems eccentric to say in the very least.

Who is this man? Lucius thinks, I'll have to wake up, I guess, for breakfast and so that I can ask them about last night's Night Shift.

Lucius wakes the other watchmen and the other guy with a light tap on their shoulders. With a smile on his face, Lucius tells them, "Guys, let's go to the kitchen to prepare for breakfast. While we walk, can you narrate what happened last night and who this new guy is?"

Robert would have never fallen asleep on the job! Lucius finds him - tired, yes - but awake. He follows Lucius to the mess hall. "Well, it was, overall, rather uneventful. That guy was trapped in that hatch I found. I let him out do he would stop screaming."

Georgey remains mostly unresponsive to the calls of awakening. He rolls over onto his back and starts snoring loudly.

He could always eat the breakfast in bulk with lunch later anyways.

Lucius stops for a bit to see if the other guys have followed him to the mess hall, but he only sees Robert. He decides to return for a bit to the main room and sees that Georgey is still sleeping, doing a good job at that. Lucius decides that he should do something, and not just leave him alone there.

"Hey, haven't you have had enough sleep?" Lucius asks as he shakes Georgey awake. "Won't you join us?"

Lucius then walks to the other side and also taps Lancelot on the shoulder to wake him up. Afterwards, he approaches the new guy, who may or may not have been asleep, and taps him on the shoulder as well. Lucius decides to initiate conversation.

"Excuse me and sorry to wake you up, but I'd like to know your identity, how you ended up here, and what we should do with you," Lucius asks the eccentric guy who apparently was found in the hatch from what he has heard.

"Ah, I am Harbin, the greatest wizard in all the land!" Harbin introduces himself.  If Lucius didn't recognize the other man before, he would now.  The whole exploding tanning vat and rain of pee incident was very memorable.  "The magistrate of this town asked me to assist the noble guardsmen of this tower against the forces of darkness which plague the land!  Being a great and charitable wizard, I agreed to lend my talents of woodcraft and sorcery to this fine cause.  I believe I have served for... almost a year now?  I am unsure how long I spent on sabbatical in the basement with those delightful myconids.  Lovely fellows."

Georgey mumbles incoherently as he straightens up and sits, rubbing his eyes, having been brutally SHAKEN awake by the rude Lucius. "I'm... *yaaaaaaaaaaawn* ...still tired...."

That is the only thing he manages to say before plopping back down on the floor. Lucius was probably formulating his requests improperly for Georgey's snoozing mind to comprehend. Better to be more direct, perhaps?

Lucius is amazed by Georgey. So, okay, he refuses to wake up after I SHAKED him awake, Lucius thinks, Maybe I should be a little more gentle this time? I might have been more ruder to Georgey because of his lazy personality.

"Georgey, please wake up. It's time for breakfast," Lucius kindly asks Georgey as he touches the adult's shoulder. "If you're up for it, please do follow me to the kitchen. I'd be happy if you would."

Lucius also motions for Lancelot and Harbin to follow him to the kitchen. He walks ahead and sees that Robert is already there. He approaches Robert and asks, "What's in for breakfast?"

"...mmmmmmmmmmokay..." Georgey quietly gets up, rubs his eyes again and thrudges into the kitchen.

He walks over to a chair, sits in it, leans against the table and starts snoring.

Lucius observes that bread seems to be the primary breakfast for them this day. He decides to get slices of bread and some ham which he remembers bringing as he believed that there'd hardly be any food in the watchtower; he makes 2 sandwiches, one for him and another for Georgey who he guesses to have been sleeping once again. He places himself on a chair and proceeds to offer the sandwich to Georgey, but, yes, the guy is sleeping again, and quite peacefully at that.

Oh, come on! Lucius thinks, Is there such a person who could sleep and laze around all day that much?

Lucius decides that maybe he should take another approach at waking Georgey up. Sure, he could just decide to leave the guy alone, but, no, he can't allow such laziness to be practiced in here. Lucius was a scholar after all, and all his life, he worked hard to achieve his goals, and this guy arrives. He learned to dislike people who weren't motivated at all to do their jobs since he was a young lad, and he decided that it was his goal to inspire lazy people.

So, Lucius applies his new approach. He holds the sandwich and brings it near Georgey's nose. Who wouldn't be attracted by food? Lucius thinks as he brings it ever closer. "Wake up, Georgey, or you're gonna miss some good food," Lucius says in a soothing manner. "Besides, Day Watch is gonna be fun~."

Day watch wasn't going to be fun, they had received a letter chastising them for the conspicuous lack of a shift change signal coming from their tower last night, and somebody would have to deal with the rather large blood stain on their door before the travelers arrive and everything goes sideways. Have you ever tried to explain to a group of murdering douch~ I mean adventurers that a blood stain on a door is not an invitation to come in and hit people?

Essentially they had a decent amount of work to do, somebody has to go up and try to work the old semaphore system and get it displaying it's all clear signal, then somebody has to stand outside to greet and question any travelers passing by, and of course somebody has to make sure that the new arrival is in fact, not going to try and kill absolutely everyone.

Lucius finishes eating his sandwich. He looks to Georgey to see if he has woken up and eaten breakfast but it seems that he is still sound asleep. He decided that it would be best if he didn't try to wake Georgey up as it was likely that he wouldn't listen to him.

Lucius thinks about what it is that he should do. He remembers that he already changed the signals earlier before everyone else woke up, thus, he decides to go to the damaged and bloodstained door and attempts to fix and clean it with a few tools he managed to bring into the watchtower.

Lucius remembers a nearby source of water, and he brings back a bucket of the stuff from a well and starts to clean the blood stains marking the door. it was surprisingly easy as a little bit of water somehow manages to cause entire swathes of the stuff to drip down into the ground and get itself absorbed into the earth once more.

Lucius himself was in the process of attempting to nail some wooden planks to cover up the pike holes when he heard a man say in a commanding tone of voice "Congratulations, you actually managed to do your job properly this time".

Lucius would find the commanding voice to have come from a rather imposing looking man in a red gambeson, he carried a standard halberd on his right hand. His face was rather scarred and only one of his blue eyes were open, the other was nothing but a scarified mess, but the way the man holds himself, and the man's thick and bushy chevron mustache along with his rather pronounced frown would suggest that he was another guardsman.

He moves slightly forward and extends a hand before saying "My name is Watchman Genseric; I am just here to make sure that the four of you haven't died horribly".

Lucius feels a bit frightened as he looks at the man. The man seems to be of the imposing type and he bears features that mark him as an experienced person. Lucius accepts the hand that the man extended and holds it like a handshake.

"Where did you come from? What do you mean by dying horribly in the watchtower? Are there threats that can really do that? What can you say about the supernatural phenomenon that has occurred here thus far?" Lucius asks the barrage of questions in a fast manner, most likely due to his sheer curiousity on the subject.

The commanding man laughs at Harbin's statement, it wasn't a very nice laugh, and in fact it was rather rude and dismissive. After a while he moved slightly towards Harbin before saying "Are you one of those 'Wizzard' types who think that they can make weird things happen by just waving their arms and saying nonsense?".

He then stares intensely at Harbin's face for a moment as he scratched his chin, he seemed to be deep in thought, and as if trying to remember the silly man's name or identity the man, but after a while he says "Are you the one known as....Herbin?".

He does not reply to any of Lucius's questions; he seemed to be much more interested in questioning the supposed Wizzard.

Things are rather quiet in the watchtower itself, and there wasn't really anything of note other than the trap door that led down to some fungus filled basement, and the barrel of herring and powder.

"Herbin?  Never met him.  I am Harbin, the greatest wizard in all the land!" Harbin declares, pointing upwards, "It says so on my hat, so it must be true.  This Herbin is probably an imposter seeking to sponge off my impeccable reputation, or else sully it with base acts."

The imposing man stared at Harbin for a moment, and he beckoned for the Wizzerd to follow him into the watchtower as he said "Right, so the two of you think that you have seen some weird shit haven't you? Like dancing lights or people calling themselves Bob and kicking you in the nadgers?". The man shook his head as he continued walking towards the tower "You kids and your imaginations these days".
He shook his head again as he inspected the still cluterred mess that is the main room of the watchtower, and he shouted out the words "NOW WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF CLEANUP?" before dashing off to clean up the area without waiting for an answer.
As the commanding man was cleaning up the place, he opened the barrel in the center of the room, which caused a herring to snap up and bite him on the nose; after a short battle he threw the herring back into the barrel. And he continued cleaning the room while mumbling something about improper use of black powder.

Song

A few moments later the sound of galloping horses could be heard outside of the tower again, except this time a man keeping watch on the highest floor would see a lone rider bearing the extremely plain colour of a guard from the eastern town of Multon. He was wearing a battered looking off white gambeson, and he seemed intent on not losing the contents of a small leather pack he had with him.
The rider looked intent on reaching the watchtower itself, although there didn't seem to be a reason why he was running so quickly.

  • 2 weeks later...

"Yes. There has been some strange occurrences in the previous day. I have personally encountered a floating herring, which is currently kept in a barrel. Georgey seemed to have encountered some strange people outside, something that involved a man named Bob and there were some guys from The Other Watchtower." Lucius tells the commanding man who seemed skeptical about his testimony. Lucius continues to follow the man as he attempts to clean the Watchtower.

He observes the officer as he encounters the herring which was kept in the barrel. He doesn't interfere with the ongoing battle and waits until he places the herring inside the barrel before saying, "I did tell you there was a herring inside the barrel. Do you believe me now?"

Georgey couldn't take it. The shouting, the galloping...it surprised him so much that he toppled down from his chair while sleeping so peacefully. He rolls over to his stomach and somehow gets up and towards the stairs, rubbing the heavy curtains of his eyes.

Georgey goes down towards the main room, where he finds some new guy doing something loud. And Lucius was there too.

"Uhm...what's going on here? I'm trying to sleep..."
