"Rooz, eh? Not a common name..." Spinning the lance idly in his hand, he turned to the Archer nearby "as for your buddy, he ain't dead. At least I'm pretty sure he ain't; such a weak blow shouldn't be able cave in a grown man's skull. You uh... you realize your captain is dead though right? Infact, if I know Erce, she's probably chowing down on him right..."

"So... I asked him this before he fell, and he gave a pretty clear answer. Maybe you'll give a better one though- you sure you and your friends here really want to continue this fight? The asshole who ordered you to attack is gone; I told him I'd put down every last one of his men too, for his attitude problem. But uh... you take that bow in your hands there, place it on the ground real nice and just walk away, well... I can't really count you as being one of his men anymore, now could I?"

"Either way, it's your decision bro. I won't stop ya, hell I'll even let ya carry old Rooz here away to safety. You two could go get a drink once he comes to, start looking for an employer who won't throw your lives away for nothing."

"You — You killed the Captain?" The archer, a young boy who looks no older than fourteen, looks stunned for a moment, then shakes his head. "Well, so much for that . . . it's one way to go about things, I guess. We could walk away, but I can't make that decision. It's up to Rooz, and we can't leave without the others too. Sterling and Yves. They should be around here somewhere too. On the other side of these trees, maybe. I hope they're okay . . . they're fighting the rest of you guys, right?"

 

He casts a worried look off to the other end of the block, but isn't able to see past Marek and the line of trees. "If we'd known we'd be up against Queen's Knights, even that dumb Captain probably wouldn't have taken the job. Or maybe he would've. I mean, geez, what a mess."

"Oh trust me kid, he definitely knew who we were when he started this brawl me and one of my fellow knights tried to talk to him, but he wouldn't listen. About your other friends though, I'm afraid I don't really know where they are. Alot of the guys who were near the captain's position were either knocked out or killed after they came at us, if their further down the avenue, chances are they're still fine... for now. Been pretty chaotic around here, for... well you know why already..." He turned his head, glancing down the same way the boy was. He stopped spinning his lance as he did so. Shit... these assholes were willing to go so far as to hired a kid to fight them? He... didn't know why he was surprised, hell that gladiator they harbored had looked and sounded no older than 14 to him at most, about the same age as this kid...

 

what the actual fuck, man? Putting down of grown ass men who had gone out of their way to start some needless death match was one thing, but... 

 

"Those two though, Yves and Sterling... they wouldn't happen to be an axe fighter and another archer... would they? I didn't hit your friend that hard when I knocked him out, he should be fine soon enough. If I can convince the others in your group to just chill out for a minute, you think he'd agree to just give up this crap and leave? The captain and.... Lord Leofric..." He paused, thinking about it for a minute. Did he want leofric's blood for this too? The captain had been an irritable asshole who struck first yes... 

 

but Leofric was the asshole who had sicced this deathsquad on the pirate kid to begin with. He'd made it obvious he viewed people as nothing more than property when it suited his desires, and Marek had gotten anything but good vibes from him, in the brief moments before this mess began.

 

Yes... he did want Leofric dead for this mess. The prick definitely had something coming to him...

"Yeah... the captain and Leofric, they're the only ones we're actually concerned with here. You guys had the misfortune of being on the payroll of some nobleman with his head up his ass, doesn't you all have to go out like this though. So how about it, you think Rooz here would listen to reason, if I pulled it off?"

"Yeah! That's them! An axe guy — kinda skinnier than you'd expect, long hair. And another archer like me, but uh, older. They're never far from each other, so if you find one, you should be able to find the other one.

 

If they're okay, then I'm okay with blowing this popsicle stand. I bet Rooz would be too. None of us ever liked the Captain, and we didn't want to fight for Lord Leofric, either, but then the Captain went and saw the price he was putting up, and — ugh, I mean the whole gladiator thing is none of my business, but his attitude about it rubs me the wrong way. World would be a better place without him in it, probably. But what do I know?"

 

Lowering his bow now, he looks up at Marek, brushing dark hair finally out of his eyes to reveal strikingly teal irises beneath. "Just tell those two that Grayham asked. And uh, don't take Yves too seriously if he says . . . anything, really."

"This could have gone a bit better, though it could have gone a bit worse," Marcus muttered, moving over to the recently downed woman. "Sorry, but you're not dying on my watch."

 

Vuln Akane back to the state of living

"well alright then. Let's give this a shot." Turning to the trees, his eyes briefly flashed violet as he peered beyond their cover to the battles being fought. Yes, just where they'd been when he'd seen them from Erce's back earlier... or well, close to where they had been. The Archer he distinctly remembered, given he'd been the reason he dismounted in the first place. Clearing his voice, he spoke as loudly as he could, voice carrying like thunder as he shouted above the din of conflict. 

 

And lo and behold, it held the same volume as the same screech he'd used to summon Erce when the fight began.

"OI, YVES AND STERLING, I'VE BEEN TALKING WITH YOUR FRIENDS GRAYHAM AND ROOZ 'ERE; GRAYHAM WANTS TO KNOW IF YOU TWO ARE DOWN WITH GIVING UP THIS POINTLESS FIGHT AND JUST WALKING AWAY! THAT CAPTAIN WANDROUGHT YOU LOT WERE FOLLOWING IS KINDA DEAD NOW, AND THE ASSHOLE LEOFRIC IS SOON TO FOLLOW 'IM, SO YOU KINDA GOT MORE TO GAIN BY JUST LEAVING AT THIS POINT!"

"Heh... I still have something to do in this world. I'd claw my way back up through that thing your people call Hell." Akane stood up, the arrow still lodged in her side. She shot Marcus a look that he might not have even seen. A slight smirk not much else. "You missed a spot." she laughed turnin' slightly to show the haft of wood still sticking out of her side.

Akane sheathed her blade, she needed her hand free to deal with this particular problem. She pushed the arrow out along it's original path. Blood hiding just behind it started to flow yet again, though it was nothing that'd kill her anytime soon. A decent blow, but nothing that'd kill. She didn't really give much respect to it, the bow was not a special weapon by standards. She turned the arrow over in her hand staring at it for a moment. Covered in red it glistened with fresh blood. Her blood. She laughed. it'd been awhile since she had bled. *crack*. The sound of the haft breaking in twain as she snapped it in-between her fingers.

"Mr. P-priest, I-I've got your back." Herrman rode over to Marcus, pulling out her staff in order to heal him.

"Hm . . . do you hear that?"

 

Cursing under his breath, Yves presses a hand to his side where the little brat's axe had struck past his light armor. How dare he! "Apologies, dear Sterling, but I'm a little busy at the moment."

 

"No, no. Listen. I heard something about Rooz. And Grayham."

 

"Those two?" Somehow, Yves manages to straighten up, looking a little pale. "Oh, they'll be just fine on their own. They're capable. That little squirt is even better than me at — wait, what am I saying? He's — "

 

"The Captain's dead, Yves."

 

" —— What? " The man's dismissive tone immediately changes. "Then — that means . . . Sterling, my dove, what are you doing standing around for? Come on, let's hurry over! I'm not staying here one moment longer." Breaking away from the fight, the two rush through the trees, emerging on the other side. Yves gives a loud gasp upon seeing Rooz' unconscious form. "Rooz! Oh, no no no, this can't — " 

 

"Yves, he's — "

 

He turns to face Marek, already notching an arrow. "You . . . you did this?" Tears bead in the corners of his eyes.

 

"Yves, calm down."

 

"I will not be calm! What is the meaning of this?"

"He yet lives. His soul, while fading, still burns. An ember that still means hope. You don't have long though, so quell your rage. If you mean to save him you must go now." Akane saw something in them. They weren't quite as filled with tar as the rest they had encountered thus far. Perhaps honest men that got caught up in something they had no intentions of ever being part of. Perhaps due to that wretched beast known as coin... she never truly understood why those from "civilization" fought over pointless bits of metal... but she wasn't really here to muse on that. Either way, she knew they were different. She could still see it through her quiet rage.

Her tone was clearly harsh to the men, filled with an anger that bubbled, but it wasn't directed at them. At least not in a negative way. If they wanted to save their friend they needed to listen to reason. "Further, the lance wound is the least serious. My companion aimed only to knock him from his feet. Not to kill. The only murderous intent he had was against that captain of yours. It's the  gashes you need to put attention into. " she said pointing at her sword strokes.

"Nothing that this can't staunch, however. He's a good fighter unlike most of these rats around here. He just wasn't quick enough to avoid my blade. He's lucky, for most it goes worse fighting a demon." she gestured with a vulnerary in her hand. She gestured to make sure it was clear what she held in her hand and that it wasn't a weapon of some kind. 

 

She gave it an underhand toss towards the one that still had a level head on his shoulders. "Catch."

"Hm, she's right, you know. You probably want to stop shouting so much before you pass out too, Yves. We can't carry both of you out of here."

 

" . . . Fine. I guess we should thank you for getting rid of that human sore of a Captain we had. Good riddance. If this hadn't gone so south, then maybe Rooz really could have fulfilled his dream."

 

"There won't be much left of the company after this job, I wager," Sterling replies thoughtfully. "We might as well start from scratch." He catches the vulnerary tossed at him, looking back up at Akane with some small surprise. "Hmm, you don't look very good yourself, miss. How did you get so badly hurt?"

 

"Uh, that was me."

 

" — Well that explains it. I didn't think it would be from the Captain's men. No hard feelings, I hope." Pocketing the vulnerary, he moves over to Rooz' unconscious form and, despite the difference in size between them, hefts the large swordsman over his shoulder without much apparent difficulty despite his thin frame. "We should make ourselves scarce before the others start looking for us, then."

 

"Wait, my lovely, did you bring the thing? You know . . . "

 

"Oh. No, I left it behind. I think I might leave it for them." Turning to Akane and Marek, he offers a mild smile. "There's a little something at the other end of this alleyway, where your comrades are, tucked behind some trees. It was intended to be a gift to our Rooz here, but it's yours now if you want it. I'd say our lives are the more precious artifact here."

 

"Well said, Sterling. Wonderful as always."

 

"Okay, let's just haul ass and get out of the city while they handle the rest of these guys."

 

"Indeed. Thank you, Queen's Knights. I would say we owe you our lives, but who knows if we'll meet again." Carrying Rooz over his shoulder, he heads north for the western exit, the others following behind.

Seeing the group fleeing the city, the soldier scoffs derisively. "The traitors! Grrr, always knew they would pull a stunt like this, deserting the job and leaving the rest of us to rot. Our Captain'll be my Captain till I drop, idiots! So do your worst."

From the backlines, Wren couldn't exactly make out what was being said, but from the looks of it, three men on Lord Leofric's defected, then turned heel and ran? And they called him the coward! At least he had a strong enough backbone to fight in the name of duty, even if he didn't necessarily agree with what they were fighting for (glorified theft). Jogging over to the troubadour and the (curmudgeonly, in his opinion) older monk, Wren plays another little tune, hoping to at least motive his own comrades to be loyal to the cause. Even if that cause was taking them closer and closer to Lord Leofric and the inevitable social scandal that would ensue. Goddess preserve them all.

 

"Let's go! Cover Lady Akane!"

 

Move to L14 and motivate Herrman for more heals, and Marcus for more general destruction!

“Well, good on them. They’re smart enough to not get themselves killed.” Rokan took a peek to see one lone soldier standing in the trees. “Guess not all of them were.” Rokan took position south, taking aim at the man. He leaned back, noticing the kid behind him.

“Thanks for the help, but please don’t follow those guys, we’d prefer you fighting the people that actually want our blood.”

"Lady? I've not been called that before. Guess the kid is really that naive or thinks flattery will work on me. I suppose it's nice to be seen for what I am for once though, even if it might not be genuine." Akane thought to herself at the bard's words. She wasn't oft used to being seen in such a way, though, often was the case when you were known as a demon. Her people weren't exactly seen as much more than animals by the people of Gossmys. Gossians, despite being the true foreigners, never treated them well. They barely treated her people as humans, let alone more than oddities for them to ogle.

Much to be expected of the exiles and brigands given a plot of land to remove them from their country so they didn't have to actually deal with their own problems. Of course, that'd be too hard. 

"You should focus on protecting yourselves. I can handle myself. Ahhhhhhhh!" she said putting her hand to her side. She was still bleeding something fierce. "Damned toothpicks..." she whispered under her breath.

Rokan's arrow strikes the already heavily winded soldier and easily brings him to his knees. Though he'd talked big, the blood loss from his injuries make him clearly unable to go much further.
