Mael's Japanese playlist

Why? Because I can. And because not every anime theme is the bomb. It really isn't. Not a fan of those fake high, whiny pitched voices because they think it makes it sound cute (it just makes me want to eat a baby). So, I'm here to introduce the gems I've found that are to my discriminative taste. Although fair warning disclaimer here: I tend to gravitate toward sad, emotional music. I may occasionally diverge to give a random other song that isn't japanese at all, but that's because surprise awesome.

I'm gonna like all the songs I post on here (duh), but I'll rate 'em all high, medium, or low tier to refer to how often I do/would play them if I owned.

So, for the first song:

Sakasama no Chou Actually, that got deleted off youtube because they don't like for youtube to have nice things.

Trust You- Yuna Ito (from Gundam 00)-

To start you off, a wonderfully dynamic song that isn't as slow as most love songs. It's upbeat with emotional vocals and perfectly orchestrated music that just keep you into the song for the entirety, not just the refrain.

Anyways, the original song got taken off youtube too and all you can find are lame fan covers. So here's some downloads instead. The full version IS kinda long, so the short version would be top tier for me. Full version would probably be low tier for sheer length- something I'd listen to every once in a while.

Alright, I will.

-Dakusou Yume Uta- Diggy Mo, Soul Eater ending-

I'm not usually a fan of rap/hip hop style stuff, and especially not in japanese because it often ends up sounding wtf. In the way that South Park's japanese show theme song "protect my balls" is wtf. But this one is obviously different. It has a lot more vocal dynamics than the rythmically dominated genre usually encompasses and even borders on Pop. I have no idea what he's saying but doesn't matter. I like the sound. Most of you are probably familiar with this one anyways due to the anime's popularity, but let's not skimp out on what goes without saying, shall we?

Alright, today I've got 3 songs by the same artist to share.

First one is nice and slow, second is in between, and the last one is definitely a bit more rebellious. And yeah, Utada Hikaru has done much more than just the KH songs. Oh and trust me on this one- look up the english translations.

Deep River- Utada Hikaru

Been a bit since I updated.

First one first:\

Hikari- Saeko Chiba

It reminds me of nothing more than a Japanese version of Enya. That being said, it's sweet and hypnotic, with it's rhythm taking you in. And the almost obligatory flute/pipe part. It's from the anime Heat Guy J but I've never seen it. Anybody ever heard of it?

Lion- Macross Frontier

From an anime about aliens and how these special girls interfere/communicate with 'em when they're singing and drama stuff. I wasn't paying attention when it was playing in anime club- I was busy protecting my SSBB champ status. But I was lucky enough to watch the last episode where they played this song. Upbeat with intense moments, it worked really well as the song accompanying their final battle with the hivemind aliens. The duet sounds great and nicely blends the singing abilities of the 'younger' and 'older' singers each.

Also tossing this one in.

I just really like the sound and the instrumentals. Not sure how else to describe why I like it. It's a game ending song, but I've only seen the short anime based off the first game- which is apparently a dating sim game. It's kind of a strange story that deals with the main character who goes to an all boys school. Except they're changing it so that an all girls school is sending their students there for a semester. And out of nowhere this girl, Midori, shows up and wants to be his girlfriend. Because apparently it turns out that in a past life they loved each other but were cursed to forever be apart. He doesn't remember at all but she does and she actually came through time and space to be with him. Stuff happens and I don't really remember much besides that and the ending, which I won't spoil. Oh, and finding this song. So enjoy and such.

Edit: eh, I liked the ending song too, so here ya go.

Alright, here's one of my all time favorites:

Eternal Snow- from Full Moon Wo Sagashite

'It's sad and it's sweet and I know it complete,' to paraphrase some other famous song.

Edit

Another top favorite of all time

BT's theme- Yuki Kaijura, from dot.hack//sign

Sad and sweet is just my style and the violin in this is perfect. Pretentious false pride prevalent in rap, outpour of anger and tales of abuse and corruption in metal and hard rock... None of that is me. There is nothing like that memory that brings a tear a your eye and lightens your step. It is a treasure- the shadow of a yesterday that brightens the way today. I'm slow to anger and I'm lucky that even if I do get angry, it's easy for me to just let it go.

>Yoko Kanno

Fuck, I have to watch Sakamichi no Apollon sometime since it's her and the director of COWBOY BEBOP on it. Plus it's historical and has jazz in it. So it has to be fucking awesome. Try out the OP:

Different pitch due to copyright shit.

I like the start of it. And I guess it's higher pitch than it would've been otherwise?

Also, to add the Phantasy Star Zero ending song, Taisetsu Na Mono ("Precious Thing")

Kimi Ni Aeru Kisetsu, by Hanaboy

The song is sad, and I can't find the lyrics for it... But anyways, I discovered this song as it was featured in this video (a link given by another fan of the Godzilla series who posts up his amazing fanart on DA). This is a japanese monster movie that was never released and is based on Ray Bradbury's short story, The Fog Horn. A sea monster, the last of its kind, is drawn to a light house because the fog horn sounds like another of its kind. Infuriated at the lighthouse's lack of response, it destroys the lighthouse when the horn is turned off. One can imagine the terrible loneliness...

The plot follows Johnny, the protagonist and narrator, and his boss, McDunn, who are putting in a night's work at a remote lighthouse. The lighthouse's resonating fog horn attracts a sea monster who destroys the place. This was actually the third time the monster had visited the lighthouse. He had been attracted by the same fog horn on the same night the two earlier years. McDunn attributes the monster's actions to feelings of unrequited love for the lighthouse, whose fog horn sounds exactly like the wailings of the sea monster himself. The fog horn tricks the monster into thinking he has found another of his kind, one who acts as though the monster did not even exist. When the horn is turned off, the monster destroys the lighthouse in anger. Both workers survive the incident, and within a year the lighthouse is rebuilt, this time with reinforced concrete. The protagonist mentions that he has since been married with a home and a new job, while McDunn is now the building's new master. The monster never returned and McDunn mentions that it probably went back to the deeps to wait until mankind is gone before it looks for others of its kind again.

-Wikipedia

And because this is reborn...

"Many years later the idea set down in this story was used in one of the early episodes of the TV series "Pokemon", in which the owner of a lighthouse uses the horn and a recording to call a Dragonite to his tower."

Oh, and this literary master recently passed away too. Q.Q

and then that reminds me of this, which is pretty much the song for Gamera: The Brave, another but rather new Godzilla style monster movie.

How have I not remembered to put this one in?!

Last Kiss- Bonnie Pink

Otherwise known as the first ending song for Gantz, which is how I ended up discovering Gantz. And you know anything about Gantz is that characters die. Combine that with this song and it's defintely on the sad side. Music video is awkward though.

English Lyrics

My heart is burning red hot, the sunset has taken away my words

Time is standing still, equal to the depth of my love

Are you leaving with just one word?

Tomorrow without you

It's bitter like beer for kids

You kissed my slim fingers

I’ll never forget you

Even if we’re apart

I’ll always remember, remember our last kiss

Everyone begins as an innocent, pure baby

Even if you bite into a bitter fruit, you can’t give up, walk straight

The rain has passed, but it’s still stinging me

I'm lonely as floating ice

You kissed my slim fingers, I won’t forget the warmth

Even if we’re apart, I’ll remember your kiss

You’ll eventually make sense of what you can’t understand at all, like a river

You can blame anyone, for whatever you want, but don’t dirty our love

You kissed my slim fingers

I’ll never forget you

I’ll kiss you for the last time, I believe that we’ll meet again

I remember how you cried as you kissed my slim fingers

Even if this is the end

I won’t forget, won’t forget, our last kiss

I won’t forget, won’t forget, his kiss

Cold Bullet Blues- High School of the Dead, 4th Ending

Why do I love it so much? Hard to put into words. It just has that perfect depth and strength of emotion in her singin. Which is complimented by the lighter, contemplative, perhaps uncertain voice that leads up and break into those more heavily emotional parts.

If you'll notice, this is the one I wanted to post first, but youtube decide to hate on the song. Happened to find this instead of a million covers of the song. Which is the ending for a very depressing anime. At least the first 4 episodes are really damned depressing. After that I hear it starts following a certain character, but circumstances only allowed me to watch the sad ones. Enjoy.

Oh fucking shit, BT's theme...fantastic! .hack//sign just has such a wonderful soundtrack. Aura might be my favorite. Although, my overall favorite for any anime would have to be Ran no ketsui from Detective Conan. Short but spectacular. I would link it with the video but i don't know how to do thst here, and i think Mael is the only one supposed to put videos here anyway.
