[IC] TotM:DC "Terraria: A fresh start"

There isn't really an emotional response to the mockery, just a raised eyebrow.

"I woke up in a cave with too narrow an opening to leave comfortably. Once I was out, there was not a chance to bathe. I deemed safety and expediency more important than cleanliness or being wholly presentable. I apologize if I have offended you by taking this seriously.

Also, yes, Onyx is fine, or Rivers."

She does, indeed, take the clothing, however, simply because her clothes were in fact badly in need of repair, and she listens closely to the dryad when she speaks about what they needed to do. Several large creatures, infantry, and other things of the like. Likely too close together to take out normally... Yes, a plan would have to be formulated.

Arminius smiles back at Calvera and gives her a quick nod. As the dryad finishes he turns to speak.

"I was actually waiting for you to get back for a similar reason to why you were gone. Specifically I'm planning to go out and lay out traps and otherwise harass the goblins forces to get us more time and weaken them. I was told you could help me get camouflage for while I do that."

Spoiler

Thuam>Purification Powder(9 vs 13, 17): This mana type smalls strongly of harsh cleaning chemical fumes, the smell is strong enough to mask almost any other odor if you can stand it.

Leo takes the bag, and nods his head.
"Thanks. This should be useful."

He test a pinchful of powder, and a strong chemical smell fills the air as the pinch of powder breaks down into mana.
"Uhnggg...that's pretty strong."

He closes up the bag and returns his attention to the meeting.
"I plan to produce a work force of golems in the morning. These golems should be able to preform a few task like construction, and mineing. Once the enemy arrives we can equip them with weapons and send them to the front lines. We are also going to need some defenses. I was thinking plasma cannons."

"We should strive to eliminate the enemy with as few casualties as possible, best case scenario, we loose no one. For that reason, The militia should be on the back row. Let that giant spider and the automated defenses thin out the enemy first."

"Agreement."

Jun stopped to think for a moment before she said, "Can you show us the path the goblin army will take to get here? I think some of us are good at sneaking around, and there is at least one person in this whole town that can cook up a whole lot of explosives and traps for us to use, might thin their numbers a bit more. Although I presume that they would keep their mages far behind their infantry."

Satomi nodded once upon hearing the Dryad’s explanation of the taint here (it sounded like maho was involved — it made sense, that was the kind of foulness Satomi expected undead to spring from. At least it sounded like the Taint had been mostly handled.), and then she nodded twice upon hearing the Dryad’s description of the enemy forces.

The samurai-ko then cleared her throat and faced the group as a whole, pulling her notebook and the pen she’d pilfered from Earth Bet from out of areas of her obi sash that didn’t already have things hanging off of them. She flipped open the notebook to a sketch that she had been making earlier that day as she measured the lengths of the village’s “walls”. Said sketch was a map of the village two planned walls with little sections of their structures quickly drawn near them, as well as two circles on each wall. The canyon pass was denoted as well, with the word “traps” written on it.

”Okay, so my first priority... the walls that the village has right now are... um... not... they aren’t going to work, and I’ll leave it at that. So I’m going to be rebuilding them both. Instead of these purely wooden, strapped-log walls, each of the walls I’m going to make will be buttressed stone brick walls, which would be sturdy enough to stand up and stay up on their own, but to ensure their stability under force, I am also going to make wooden frames behind them, which will also serve as a scaffolding to allow us to get up to our side of the walls. These walls will also feature battlements for snipers to take cover behind, because those magicians will need targeting more precise than siege weaponry but their presence also means that arrow slits would be less effective.

These walls will also each have two siege weapon mountings. After I’m finished with the walls, which will be built tomorrow (and I’m going to need additional manpower from the villagers and Leo’s golems) these will be my next priority. One mounting on each wall will have heavy weaponry meant for usage on these ogres — one will be a large siege crossbow for which I will make slime gel-cored bolts which will light when lodged inside the ogres, and for the other I was thinking perhaps an axe-trebuchet with an optional spring-load to give one strike extra oomph, though that would be primarily for destroying an ogre upon it getting close. The other mounting on each wall will be for mass weaponry, for dealing with infantry and if they clump up or join the infantry, the mages. One of these will be a kind of combination ballista firing multiple bolts, and the other will be, if I can get one of you to create me some jars or pots of area-of-effect magic, something to fire those. I also have the portable ballista I created today, which can be brought to any spot if it needs additional firepower.

There is also the canyon pass to contend with to a lesser degree, but a wall there would be misplaced because of the incline, so instead it should be heavily trapped. I may help if I have time, but I believe this is some of your specialties. There are also other things I may do if I have time, but I believe what I have listed to be the necessary components of our defense.

I will note that I cannot block off the rivers, so the militia will need to be wary about intruders coming from there and the canyons, but the weapon operators, the snipers, and anyone who wants to go out in front of the wall should be seeing the brunt of the combat.

This is also going to be a lot of work, so I would appreciate it greatly if you could give me more time to work on the weaponry when I am working on it, Kusuke-san. Manpower or golem-power can be used in the wall building, but the work on the siege weaponry will be precise and complex enough that I will have to do it personally.”

We are going to need more mountings then that if your going to that trouble.
"I can set up more magical weaponry, and get them set up to target and fire automatically. Physical ammunition is great, but we should employ some verity in our defenses. And your not the only one who knows how to build a weapon around here."

"What about the gate? How will we defend it?"

"Why don't we put a wall over the river with a grate for flow? My ability to shape solid matter should prove useful here in construction, If i can find time between all the other things i have to do"

Rivers continues to listen, while considering inwardly just what she can provide here. She was primarily a Runecaster, and hadn't had time to progress her profession skills. She knew how they functioned, and like all Phased had some basic knowledge of them, but it would take time to get any of them to full effectiveness. Goblins, however, tended to be relatively low in power, so even basic equipment would function... and the villagers here didn't appear to be Phased, so it's unlikely they had much equipment at all. Then again, neither were these adventurers. There was... something about them, a feeling not unfamiliar, but not quite identical to what she was used to feeling around other Phased. Eventually, she speaks up.

"I might be able to help with some of that, and provide some basic crafts, but I'll need to do some experiments to make sure things work the same way here as where I'm from, whether my crafts work and how to progress them. I've spent a little time getting the hang of Essence-Crafting, and I saw many slimes back where I came from, so I may be able to gather some scraps. Do you know the Affinities of the monsters around here?"

Alyssa perks up at Satomi's plan. She pulls out a bottle of swirling white and blue. "I might be able to make your job one hell of a lot easier. Today I have made multiple attempts at mass producing a particular paint that will fireproof the buildings.  This would certainly be easier than rebuilding the entire town if fire gets within the walls. I can also lend my brush to trap-making if need be."

Jun rested one hand on her backpack before she said, "I'll try to help out by gathering rare materials, scouting out the goblin army's movements, and help protect people who are going through some of the more dangerous parts of this island. Although I probably won't be of much use with constructing the walls themselves, I think I can help turn the canyon pass into a death trap." She turned slightly to face the Dryad once more before she said, "Also do you know if there any other missing villagers? I might be able to help track them down."

"If you're worried about the river side leave that to me. If you couldn't tell from the giant fin on my head or these scales fighting in water is second-nature for me!" He pointed his thumb towards himself and gave a big smile. One could've sworn they saw his teeth sparkle for a moment.  "Also, if you all can gather the metal I can help forage weaponry and armor for our group as well as villagers. If not, I'll gladly lend my hands constructing the wall. Though, those powerful monsters may have resources that we can use to help our defenses. I say we send some people to go see if they can gather some more resources eventually."

A bird with feathers of polished steel sits perched on the eve of one of the houses, picking at her feathers. As the new arrival asks something though, the bird sees fit to hop down from the roof, flapping her wings a few times and landing on her head. No sooner than Vera does, does Rivers begin to hear a voice... coming directly from the bird's mouth.

Yes. It's mouth. Like a parrot.

"I don't know what you mean exactly," The bird speaks to her in it's high, cooing voice "but if its elemental properties, it depends on the creature. Most of them don't seem to have any obvious ones, only the particularly strong ones like the Ice Spider, or the ones that have been twisted by the foul energies plaguing this place."

Her eyes tilt upward, attempting to get a good look at the bird.

"Oh. Well, that makes things somewhat more difficult then. Hmm... Perhaps I can extract the necessary Essence from magically charged items or resources, though that would likely make the original items somewhat non-useful unless they have some way of naturally attracting such energies..."

"Well, if it's slime we need we did just hear of a large aggressive slime in the forest. I'm sure we could harvest fuel from that beast. Besides, sounds like fun to beat it to a pulp." Toshiro said smashing his right fist into his left palm,  "Plus, as a bonus it'll make the forest that much safer for everyone else as well as for the bus."

Leo decided to see a demonstration of rivers magic, quickly freezes a small amount of water from the infinite gasket water source, (He should really thank blue for that thing again) and transmutes it into eternal ice. He slaps a quick core enchantment on it, causing it to produce an aura of cold, and tosses it to rivers.

"Here, try this"

Satomi popped her knuckles by flattening her hands out, arms outstretched and fingers interlaced, and then she considered all the speaking coming from the others. ”I will see how many mountings I can add without compromising the battlements too much, but it should not be a large issue — I should be able to add multiple. I am still only planning to build four myself, though, both due to time and other tasks I could be worrying about.

As for the walls over the river... well... Leo, the walls I am building do go over the river, I’m just not one hundred percent sure the grate would hold. Goblins and ogres don’t tend to be the most amphibious, though, at least where I come from, so I trust Toshiro...” His name was Rokugani and so was his gear, but he was some other race, so Satomi wasn’t sure if she should use an honorific, ”Toshiro’s ability to take care of any enemies that do make their way into the river. Oh, and if you’re gathering slime, I would appreciate some of it for my weaponry.”

"Oh, I see. I'll likely have to see what can be done with it, then. What kinds do you have?"

She smiles, seeming rather interested, pausing from her attempting to figure out which direction she could go to un-dirt herself.

Jun helpfully adds, "I can escort you to the river once the Dryad has finished answering my questions, and I should  probably ask the innkeeper to give you a room as well later."

"I have some Ice slime essence, which is sticky and cold. Kind of weird since slimes are like, really close to non-sentient usually. Uh, some Ice Sprite essence which just does cold stuff. Pretty standard honestly. And Demon Eye essence. Feel free to take your pick of them, it should be easy to get more."

Arminius shrugs. Most would note that he moved on from the demon eye essence really quickly.

The Dryad looked surprised at Lucille's comment.

"You seriously managed to kneel it?  Impressive.  The goblin Beastmasters seem to by riding some sort of large hound-like creature, I don't recognize it at first glance so I'm not sure what it's capable of."

She looked to answer Arminius's question.

"Camouflage shouldn't be a problem, I should be able to make something convincing in a few minutes worth of work."

She nodded along with Leo's statement before answering Jun's question.

"Yes, I'll plot the predicted path on the map in the Guide's office later for anyone who wants to look at it."

She listened intently to Satomi's plans and the brief following conversation before replying to Jun again.
"I don't think there is anyone else missing in particular, though there is a nomad who lives in the desert you might be able to recruit and I'm told of a friendly skeleton that lives underground and sells whatever he comes across down there, some of the villagers say they occasionally see him at the outskirts of the mine."

She looked around, waiting for a minute for any more questions to come flying her way.

"Well since it seems we've got a plan and if no one has any more questions everyone is free to go about their business and we'll get to work in the morning."

She turned back and took a step towards Lucille.

"You had several questions about the history of the island, correct?"

"Ah yes," lucille nodded, "The guide told me of the old kingdoms and how the people resided under three noble families, though he wasn't quite certain about what exactly caused people to begin to flee the isles... or what killed those who remained. You've already answered that though, concerning the whole... summoning. If you could tell me more about the old civilization though, I would greatly appreciate it; specifically what type of devices and magic they wielded at their height, and where we might find the remnants of those artifacts to use in the siege..."

She pauses for a moment, thinking of something...

"And...well. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned; what drove them to summon such twisted powers into this world? I.... we found the barrier holding back the Corruption up north. That was you, wasn't it? The others, they seem to only realize the surface of the threat, but..." She gestures to the variety of beast wandering around her- Do cleaning his paws as usual, Astra and Brachus play fighting, the chameleon giving zero fucks, the snake coiled and sleeping, Zoidberg protectively at her heels, wooping "we sensed it. We felt it at the deepest parts of our beings. Whatever caused that type of disruption has no right to exist in this world... or any, for that matter."

"Mmmm it might be worth trying to capture the beast the goblins are using. perhaps through some sort of high strength net or cage trap?"
"Hey how many healers are we going to have operating?"

Leo is tapping the table with a thoughtful look on his face, trying to figure out what else could be set up, while snow just kinda...hovered.

"Oh hey, your nature magic might be useful. Would you mind meeting with me tommrow? Ill probbly be outside the blacksmiths shop after breakfast."

The woman nods, then shifts on her feet to get more comfortable as she waits for everything to clear up.

"I'll be glad to take that offer."

Honestly it'd be a little awkward if that was a man, since it was so hard to tell, but with the whole thing where the world provides sufficient cover to preserve modes... wait. Does this world do that? Shit it probably doesn't, it doesn't do anything else.

"Ah... amendment to that. I apologize if this is a strange question, but are you man, woman, neuter, both, or other?"

And back to the fellow that was offering her essence... okay, likely a different kind of essence, from the description. Still useful. "I'll take some of the slimes and eyes, please. Especially the eyes, since cold is apparently readily available."
